Maybe it's just me...all things have risks, I know. But I wouldn't walk onto any lake that is 'frozen' - you never know where there might be an air pocket or weak spot for some crazy reason.
does it matter if you fall in? i mean like seriously, come out the same way you came in... as long as you have some dry clothes and towels spare then it doesn't really matter if you fall in.
@psycopyro001 out of curiosity have you ever been thrown/fallen into ~1 degree water?
I went sailing in lake ontario in mid december, and fell overboard. Many people get *heart attacks* because of the shock of such a sudden temperature drop, but either way your muscles are nearly immobilized, its hard to breath. On top of that, say you have to pull yourself out.. by grabbing what? a slippery surface called 'ice'?
Go ice fishing or something instead of sitting at the computer.
@superhornet59 I live in Australia, we don't have ice fishing here... nor any of the problems you described there, if i fell in a 'lake' during December ide probs take the opportunity to have a nice swim... Have you ever walked outside in 40+ degree temperatures? Chances are you would collapse if you're not used to it... now imagine walking out of a freezer into those temperatures. do you wanna not tell me how tough you are cause you fell in a lake?
@psycopyro001 I've been to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Italy once during a record heat wave. I've been in 40+ degree weather many times and yeah, it is difficult to breath when I climb mountains/volcanoes in 70% relative humidity. You think everyone on youtube is a nerdy kid?
Learn some respect, I've seen everything from +45 to -30. I'm not some young stay-at-home punk like you assume everyone is. you're not that special.
@psycopyro001 read again, i said you assume everyone is. I'm not here to trash you, I'm trying to *educate* you, because a lot of people each year die from falling through ice, and its disrespectful to assume they were a pussy with no upper body strength.
Go on my facebook page or something, ill link you up. I bought a yacht this year and I'm sailing to to the Bahamas in ~10 days, but I need to finish some final things like paint and some paperwork.. in the meantime.. yeah im stuck on youtube.
You can ignite with magnesium and magnesium ribbon, potassium permanganate and glycerin, or barium nitrate and...something else I forget. haha. I'm doing this for a school project it's so fun! I love all the videos on the web too! I want to see what the lake looks like afterwards though, in the sunlight. This is pretty awesome.
what are you using to light it? i would think it would need to be pretty hot... considering thermite is made from easily found and often accidentally mixed ingredients (aluminum and iron oxide)otherwise you would have spontaneous fires in places like stove elements or car exhaust pipes, behind dryers you get the picture
thermite is a specific BLEND of aluminum and rust. if it isnt exact it takes more energy to light it and it wont burn. if it DOES burn it will go out fast.
Next time please show us the area after the burn...

nah after about a month of cold cold weather the lakes can have up to a foot of ice on them, thats enough to support a suv

Next time you should auger it down enough to where it falls through. Might look like a volcano when all the molten iron hits the water.
