  • This is spot on. I wish the quality was a bit better, but I'm in no way complaining. =D Symphony X is quickly overtaking Dream Theater on my number 2 spot for favorite bands. :-)

Good job man. You have accomplished....the almost impossible!

  • @milonkill Thanks :)

  • @DavidPartay You're welcome bud. :D

  • @DavidPartay Man I'm trying so hard to get this song down...but my legs keep seizing up after the long double bass "solo".

    Any suggestions?

  • @milonkill ... as doing so will help 'iron out' the flaws in your technique and give you a lot more leg strength and control, especially when it comes time to developing much higher speeds. The song is around 145bpm, so it shouldn't take you too long to get comfortable at that speed, but the rule of thumb when it comes to double bass is that if you're twitching and tensing up, getting cramps, etc. you have to slow down and relax!

  • @DavidPartay Alright! Thanks man. :-D I'll post back in a few weeks to let you know where I stand! :-D

  • @milonkill Well, it sounds like a relaxation issue to me. I think the best course of action you could take would be to set the metronome at about 80, and play single strokes with your legs for a whole minute, then bump up the tempo by 5 and do it again after a short rest. You need to find the point where you can play for a minute with a bit of a burn, but without twitching or tensing up.

Make sure that you use your whole leg rather than just your ankle...

  • Man great attitude, for me the only thing that kinda put me off is the double pedal stuff, sounds like it needs a bit of work, but take it as a constructive criticism. I always wanted to do this tune and never had the balls, so props to you.

  • @mcufre Thanks! Yeah, I know it's not 100% spot on. Unfortunately these days I can't even really work on it properly as I've moved and have to use mesh heads and so getting consistency with my strokes is even more difficult to work on. But, one day I will move again and will be able to play my drums properly - there are a few things I really want to nail as far as consistency and clarity are concerned and singles with my feet is the main one.

  • Fantastic cover! Really makes me appreciate Symphony X's rhythm section more, and their use of odd meter.

  • @loganressler Thanks! Michael Romeo is a brilliant songwriter. Their new album which I *think* is due out before mid next year has apparently taken more work to complete than anything they've done previously. I seriously can't wait for it! It should be awesome...

  • @DavidPartay Oh my. That's exciting. Divine Wings of Tragedy is my favorite record, so much good material. I really loved Paridise Lost, but I would love to hear something epic like the title track of DWOT again. I'll subscribe and be sure to check out your covers, if you do some more.

  • @loganressler Sure thing! Unfortunately as I moved house my old practise room is 45 minutes from where I live so at the moment I'm making do with practise pads and a snare muffled with a pillow.

I REALLY want to do a cover of the song DWOT, it's still my favourite SX song along with Fallen! I'll find a way some day soon, I hope! I used to practise DWOT all the time.

  • @loganressler Hey again,

Just letting you know I've decided to transcribe DWOT... I have a transcription of Set The World On Fire so I'm gonna start trying to nail the song, and in the process I'll finish the transcription so by the time that's done hopefully I'll have the opportunity to do a video of STWOF and then start work on DWOT again and really nail it :)

  • @DavidPartay

    Sounds great!

I look forward to hearing/ seeing it!

I've been trying to upload a few videos of my own, just casual stuff, but the upload gets all messed up; the video plays about twice as fast as the audio. Oh well, i'll figure it out.

  • good cover, but sound quality si a poor!

  • @robertomguimaraes Thanks for the compliment. In regards to the sound quality, I can't afford mics and a mixer! This was all recorded through a pair of headphones taped to the ceiling. Seriously.

  • nice cover u did very well

  • muito bom cara parabens...

    good job!

  • nice drummin! you nailed some parts while you could have been tighter on others,, but to nail 100% of this song in 1 take is not the easiest thing to do so Im still gonna give you a HIGH rating... good job!

I also do some live vocal covers on SymX on my channel,,, if your interessted pls check it out

    Happy Easter!

    Rob

    POWERDRIVE

  • @LundgrenRob Thanks mate, I agree about the tightness. It took me a few goes because there were quite a few bits I wasn't happy with, and you can see where I clipped two different takes together because I forgot to play the bit alternating between the hats and the ride cymbal on my right hand.

I'll check out your covers :)

  • brilliant spot on!! very controlled, each section flowed nice and smooth!

  • Thank you :)

  • awsome

  • Very controlled. You really took the strategical approach to this one. Don't you get that urge to just drum madly with no skill? :)

  • Thanks :)

I certainly do get that urge, but usually when I record a song it's just after I've put a lot of effort into making sure it's spot on so I don't take any chances!

Playing live with my band is a different story though, now that I'm comfortable with the music I don't have to think about it so much! :D

  • ottimo !

    Serena

  • Keep it up! More...

  • very good!

  • Thanks!! :)

  • Hurmica

  • woops i am logged in on my wrong channel.

the one u need is "polyphemus67"

    sorry :P

  • sick drumming man :]

check out my symphony X song i covered on drums and tell me what ya think :]

  • ponte polera fofo ql..

  • Heh, I can't stand A Change of Seasons... So as far as I'm concerned The Odyssey and DWOT are better songs :).

I know Six Degrees is technically one song... But it wasn't written like one song and it works the way it is, in comparison to Octavarium, which really is awful.

  • awesome job man i love this song and have been trying to put a more prog groove influence in my music hopefully i'll get it down as well as you

  • That's pretty solid playing. As for the cover, I don't know because I don't know the song. But, you can clearly hear the kick and I have a hard time with that.

  • Thanks mate :). Symphony X are a great band and will merge will with your musical taste in Dream Theater!

In fact, I actually kind of like Symphony X more than DT... They're different though, there's no way I'm going to say one is better, except that when it comes to epic songs (20+ minutes) Symphony X is way ahead in the game.

  • well actually, DT's A Change of Seasons is 26 minutes or so, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence counts as one entire song, equaling in about a 47 minute long song hahaha.
