"Poor man's Merle" might be closer to the truth than even Johnny might like to admit. Johnny died broke--so broke that George Jones paid to have him buried.
Can I tell you a funny but true story about Johnny Paycheck? I was a country deejay for 25+ years in West Palm Beach. He made an appearance at the South Florida fair back in the 80's. I was out on the fairgrounds to interview him before the evening show at 8:00 PM. He was completely drunk but what amazed me was come show time he got up on stage and DIDN'T miss a beat. A great talent!
This song was me thirty years ago. Those days are LONG OVER. All of the "wildside" s out of me now, can't afford it anymore. Life is too short to spend it paying for dumb shit. Not to mention your health suffers later in life for all of that late night partying you did earlier in life. YOU WON'T GET AWAY WITH ANY OF IT. You got to pay one day, one way or another.........
I sure am the only hell my mama ever raised from three brothers...i have no thoughts of stoppin any time soon lol i mean i'm high right now..may God bless her
the hell with it pal, so did I, but you know what my mom and i were so close it was hell when she died, but you know something, she sure loved me until her dying breath, that is so sweet and you know what pal? alive or dead your mom will always think of you first and last, thats a mothers love so go raise some hell, I'm gonna
I am a daughter (Dad & mom are both dead, now), a mother of two sons--adult men, now--with children of their own!!! I would put myself in front of a bullet, or anything--in a heartbeat, with no other thought or hesitation about it!!!
Wow!!! If they could only knew, and could see, what I have!!!
I hope & pray that they don't have to ever swallow that 'bitter pill'!!!
I don't know what the pictures mean, but I shore dew lack this song!

Johnny taught Merle AND George to really sing country, and to inflect the vowel in a word when singing country.
He played lead for Merle, jammed and lived with George, and was instrumental in their very long careers. Give the man his due.
Merle and George would say the same.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I always liked this song but Johnny Paycheck comes off as a poor man's Merle Haggard, no offense to anyone.

Oh but what a talent!

Johhny Paycheck invented outlaw vocals. Merle Haggard owes HIM a debt.
