  • There are some Vlogbros fans who mostly like John, and don't really like Hank. Well I would just like to say that Hank is AWESOME, (and so is John) and I love this show. I feel smarter just for watching it. ^.^

  • My mother ate a lot of fish and healthy food with her first pregnancy (me) With her latter two, she ate weird food. I wound up being a pescetarian.

  • The description of pregnancy made me laugh out loud.

  • Epigenetics has always been an indicator to Intelligent Design on whether Evolution could have been pre-programmed (another layer of information above the DNA), from a programming point of view this makes sense since the epigenome is like a program that dynamically calls up the DNA libraries (sort of like a DLL in programming context). This also explain expressed and non-expressed DNA (junk DNA).

  • Great video.

I just want to point out that since the epigenome specifies what genes are expressed and that they are an internal mechanism where changes occur during the course of an individuals lifetime, lamarkian evolution has gained quite a bit of credibility.

  • technically that only applies to people who do have children, people who don't end up having children wont have a bad affect on anyone past the time of death unless maybe they donate body parts, even then they still might not.

  • Hank, isn't it huge "effect" instead of huge "affect"? But I thought you did a video about it.

  • @cinquiemealice Well... the thing is, though those words are supposed to be used specifically in certain cases... at the same time, there are some cases where you can actually use the other word instead and be perfectly right, too. The English language is just very confusing, honestly.

  • Don't you fuck with my Sonic tatertots.

  • I understood more from this video than from my university level eukaryotic gene regulation course.

  • reminds me of the episode hank hill meets his japanese half brother... BUAAAAH!

  • Did you mean "tattoo"?

  • so this means i most likely will have a kid just like me.... thinking of getting castrated

  • like if u paused the video at 1:50 to read it

  • your like tobuscus' smarter twin brother haha

  • *cracks knuckles* sorry Jimmy for arthritis at age 8.

  • sooo...if my dad gets a face tattoo, and so does my mom,i hav the chance of being born with one?

  • @itsmethecoolone no if your parents get a face tattoo, it more likely that you'll want to get one

  • To Hank and the rest of the scishow crew:

Thank you so much for making these videos! They seem to be a very interesting way to learn about various oddities of science :) I just found out about this channel and am definitely subscribing!

    p.s. I love the graphics!

  • If this is true, then BAM! EVOLUTION! Makes sense to me that epigenetics are the source of adaptation. If that adaptation is truly taken on by epigenetics, which are passed on through the generations, then there is a possibility that those could become potentially, completely genetic. I would think that it would be the cause of evolution.

  • @LeoT416 the "cause of evolution"? the cause of evolution is just mistakes in your dna

  • In my English I class, we just did presentations on research topics of our choice. One girl in my class did a presentation on genetics (which was not very informative), and essentially contradicted epigenetics. I really wanted to correct her.

  • So Lamarckian evolution has some credence to it? Interesting.

  • Sorry, great great great great Grandchildren, I really like bacon and I'm not going to stop eating it now.

  • I'd like to clone the smartest people throughout history, and create an environment that would mimic the way their originals grew up. They would not be exactly the same, but perhaps they will be useful to humanity.

  • People in my family on my mother's side have all had the ability to pick up notes from music exactly with no practise, and draw very well with no practice. These abilities were passed down to my sister and I. Is this epigenetics?

  • @TastyVyvienne I think that's more straight genetics than epigenetics. Any innate ability would not be epigenetics, since it's not started by environmental factors.

  • Face Tatoo ... LOL

  • How many generations do these last?

Also, does this mean I can blame my mom for my acne? XD

  • gahhhh.

    *effect

    *tattoo

  • this guy should run google.

  • So, does that mean that Epigenetics can lead to advances which make the use of embryonic stem cells useless? Because if we can learn to control basic Epigenetics, and Epigenetics makes certain traits in our DNA become dormant so that a cell can focus it's energy on becoming a specific kind of organ cell, couldn't we take excess cells from, say, a kidney and tamper with it to grow a heart, or nerve cells?

  • Take THAT Nature versus Nurture argument! Life is a factor of BOTH!! STOP CHOOSING SIDES!!

  • didn't this guy do a video abt the difference between affect and effect? and now he's getting it wrong

  • 4:55 tattoo and effect

  • This is both amazing and terrifying.

  • omg I love ham and cheese hot pockets

  • This is really interesting!

Im going to talk to by Bio teacher about this!

  • im a triplet & a science student so i love this :)

  • Hey! im a sperm cell!!

  • more! more! more!!!1

  • learned more about genetics in a nine minute video then in a whole year of biology, way to go public schools.

  • That. Just. Blew. My. Mind. Grapes... Quitting Smoking and Subscribing to You Good Sir!

  • Wow excellent job!

  • I love it when things the vlogbrothers talk about appear in lectures. This has been the best summary ever.

  • When he lowers his voice he sounds like homer simpson

  • i was eating while watching this and i was thinking "my great great great great great grandchildren might be effected by this macaroni and cheese"

  • 13 minute Ad before this WTH?!!

  • epicgenetics

  • So...the chinese were right with all the ancestor stuff?

  • I don't like my genes.. they gave me acne. :P

  • i love these videos

  • Anyone else see the irony in this disproving creationism, yet its probably why creationism still exists?

  • Comment removed

  • So... does that means that the "gay gene" might be just a tag that MIGHT get stuck?

  • @PhDBarinas Behaviour seldom is caused by one gene. Sexual preference is more likely to be caused by ten or hundere genes. And possibly by epigenetics as well.

  • posted this on my parents fb wall lol...don't know if they will watch it but at least their friends will...i will start a fb chain event of scishow watchers!!! buahahahaha ...ps i've also been posting them on my wall and I have a large variety of friends.

  • that's it,.. I'm doing the future world a favor and not breed

  • Did anyone ever tell you that you are amazing and/or awesome? Btw this is my favorite video of yours =D

  • tattoo*

  • mindfuck!

  • Originally it was an argument between nature vs nurture, and it became abundantly clear that nature won out, so epigenetics is just an ideological patch to explain why children resemble their parents when they never knew them and still say it is environmental, by saying the environment is imprinted into your genes. This is just bunk. The Bell Curve is an excellent resource to understand genetics.

  • Wow, ok people, this isn't science. Epigenetics is pseudo science, and I'm fairly sure it is just Lysenkoism repackaged. The studies for twins raised in separate environments have all shown that the twins will be more alike to each other than they will be towards siblings they are not related to but who grew up in the same environment. In fact smoking is rarely found in one twin and not the other, IQ, personality, education level, and income to name a few are all more correlated between twins.

  • Oh man I just discovered this guy and is he funny

  • The damage isn't already done that's my news for... oh well. I'm sorry I just looked at myself. yup my kids are screwed.

  • oh.my.god. So my children and my children's children's chilren's children are going to procrastinate when they are supposed to be doing physics homework?!?! Seriously, I'm quite scared. I don't eat what you would call a "balanced diet". I am going to eat carrots everyday till i DIE!!

  • Your graphics guy spelled tattoo wrong. It's ok, most scientific people are bad at spelling

  • 1. This is the most concise and coherent explanation of epigenetics I have ever encountered, for which I am grateful, since it's a fascinating field with profound ramifications. 2. This guy is freaking hot.

  • This reminds me of Lamarck's theory (though this is obviously much more advanced and practical than the idea that exercising every day will cause you to give birth to a heavyweight champion).

  • Comment removed

  • Can these epigenetics be used to see my ancestors pasts like assassins creed?

  • this is why i don't want to have kids, i'm afraid that my kids might get my traits and have to go thru the pain i'm suffering thru now at school. if i ever get a kid, it'll be thru adoption, i just couldn't deal with the fact that i caused someone to be hated by nearly everyone they met. also: ever heard that some traits skip kids and go to the grand kids, my dad's bipolarness skipped me but my younger brother got it so logically, my first kid is most likely gonna have it too.

  • Not the best thing to watch after eating a plate of 7 chocolate chip cookies.

  • 18 people are just envious of all our face-tattoos.

  • A guy robbed a juwlery store in germany but the had a twin so eventhoug the police had his DNA they couldn´t put him into prison. Could epigenetics solve that problem?

  • I've been obsessed with Coffee since I was about 12... Bloody hell my grandma must've been a raging coffee-holic...

  • I have that t-shirt that the clone hank is wearing, but it's brown. My life just got a whole lot better =D

  • I loved this video, just like all the SciShow videos so far, but I couldn't help but notice an error. @dmh954 is right to point out that the graphic at 4:55 is wrong. It should say "effect" instead of "affect." JOHN WOULD BE DISAPPOINTED, HANK.

    But yeah, keep doing science.

  • "We have to shove something of the size of webster dictionary through that little pipe… so let's get things done!"

  • After a huge Skyrim binge, it's nice to sit down a watch some Science.

  • i'm sorry, but 4:55, the graphic? huge Affect?? AAAAAffect? here? in this show?? come on guys, you're better than that.

  • My contribution to the future is to refrain from breeding. The world is over populated, for one. Life didn't treat me as well as it might have and so I will not be subjecting any product of my genetic make up to the risk of similar or worse treatment. True, the world will have to do without the benefit of my enlightenment being passed on to my progeny but I believe that over population is a bigger problem.

  • I love the pandamonium t-shirt

  • They used to call this "generational Curses" ..... To be BLUNT:

A drunk persons semen tastes like the whiskey he takes... You don't want to know how I figured that one out..... But that being said, suppose some heteronormative couple concieve while on booze.... the born child could be predisposed to addiction, in particular, the Booze.... And Hank. You're good looking. Heh.

  • all my family eat really un-healthy food. but im breaking the cycle, i started eating healthy like 3 years ago. its nice to think that my offspring will be people who eat healthy stuff

  • I wonder if this can be applied to something like autism.

  • @xXmiomoXx I believe that the importance of excelling in academics in the oriental culture was more of a societal and cultural expectancy than a specific genetic happening. Possibly as time went on, maybe these pressures changed the epigenetics enough to where it became the gene itself.

  • getting born with a face tattoo lol

  • In my family, a good deal of physical and character traits skip a generation. I'm almost the same person as my grandfather, and my mother is basically the same person as my great grandfather. There are certain things I know my mom passed to me that I didn't get from my grandpa, but the majority of the things I inherited came from him. Why is this so predominant?

  • It all makes sense now...

  • do a show on recreational drugs!

  • Now I feel like using the word "epigenetics" in all my conversations now....

  • learned soo much, this is awesome. Can I keep your videos the next 16 years for when I home school my kids!!!

  • I'm sorry, face tattoo is not a gene.

  • Hank has completely turned me off having kids.

  • isn't this sorta what Charles Lamarck thought. and isn't he sorta thought to be wrong when thinking this?

  • @philipviele So I'm not the only one. Huh. As soon as he started talking about a persons actions affecting their offspring's genes I thought, "Gee, that sounds like Lamarck-ism, but Lamarck was proven wrong. Or was he actually just a little bit (though accidentally) right." Granted, if I remember correctly, he thought animals made a conscious decision to change, the common example being a giraffes neck, which would still be inaccurate, but this is all very fascinating.

  • @Canahedo ya! better start doing sit-ups and brushing my teeth for my kids.

  • hank looks good for 50

  • 5:00 tattoo*

  • I appreciate the fact that you use visual aid. Very nice.

  • I thank you for the heads up that my grandchildren's health is depending on me, but I just finished eating an entire box of crackers and I'm mildly concerned for the future. (mildly = extremely)

  • You help me learn how to say smart people things.

  • @MrEpicMunch helped me learn how to say smart people to things

  • My uncle worked on the Human Genome project. Still don't understand genetics.

  • 60 year-old Hank looks pretty healthy

  • So I can blame my shortness on my mothers asthma? She took cortisone that prohibits growth, she also infected me with her asthma meaning I'm taking cortisone, so my kids will be super short? Seriously?

  • I THINK (don't quote me on this) you spelled "effect" wrong. Effect is the noun, affect is the verb. At 5:00.

  • @Avianspark I second this.

  • perhaps these epigenetic tags over generations direct the evolutionary course of species rather than random genetic mutation being the sole reason for speciation, so in way individuals on the microlevel are to some extent in charge of the type of genetic predispositions of the their offspring.

  • mind is blown

  • At 4:51 is tattoo spelled wrong?

  • I click here from the obesity video and what commercial is playing... Twix... *sides eyes youtube*

  • was that a 14 minute commercial?! :O JEEEZUS!!

  • Oh my god.. Lamarck was kind of... right?? o.O

  • "These people were isolated... "

    Me: ICE-olated... hehehehe.

  • 4:12 was when I spewed spittle all over my screen.

  • Assassin's Creed suddenly seems less ridiculous...

  • what camera do you use?

  • INCOMING LAMARCK!

  • I love this, Its almost the discovery of how an evolution can happend.

  • You're awesome, man. Keep the videos coming!!! :D

  • ill remeber this when im yelling at my future generations for staying up till 3 AM on YouTube, completel beside the point; this video ended at exactly 12:00 AM O_o

  • this is really mind-blowing and I never heard of this before. Thanks!

  • ok guys thing are gonna get a whole lot bigger in here we're gonna have to pass something the size of a meriam-webster's dictionary through that pipe over here

  • my favorite flavor of hot pokets by far iz ham and cheeze. im not sure what to make of this limited edition spicy hawaiian style pizza but ill try almost anything once!

  • This is incredibly interesting. All of your videos that I have seen are. Subscribing!

  • You are hot, have a beautiful voice, and is a super science guy. I am subscribing PERMANENTLY.

  • So... Face tatoos are Hereditary? Is this what I'm understanding?

  • About to skip ad- realize it's for ME3 and stop everything to watch.

  • I can no longer go back to my bio class..

  • the commercial said semien. lmao

  • You bet they were "ICEolated".

  • "tattoo" has got two Ts.

  • Comment removed

  • ...Nice chair

  • Isn't that the wrong form of "effect"?

  • So teenagers can blame their parents for even more stuff.

  • 4:07 He makes giving birth sound soo horrible! * sobs in corner *

  • Watching this, I was more concerned about the graphic design technics of your video instead of what you were actually saying... I hope it's because I am an artist, and not just plain stupid, LOL

  • Does this mean that Lamark was right?

  • Nice nice :)

Good thing that you included the social stigma implications as that is still one area that will be changing as more is learned in the field of genetics as well as Epigenetics.

  • 4:50 You misspelled "tattoo" :P :P :P

  • The same question pops up in evolution: Exactly HOW does information pass from the outside world down into the microscopic world of DNA????

  • im willingly watching scientific related videos on YouTube on a Friday.... interesting....

  • ey dont you forget the sames!

  • As a homeschooler I can watch this for school. :D BEST. SCIENCE CLASS. EVER.

  • BILL NYE the YouTube Guy!...... whose name isn't Bill Nye!

  • Awwww fuck.....

We are devolving ourselves, everyone will be born with cancer in a few generations.

  • i like smart guys. he is soo smart

  • I do not understand how can you pass on a face tattoo. I do get the eating, smoking, etc. But not the face tattoo (I'm sorry if it was a joke, may be)

  • Is that why stereotypes such as asians are smart are sometimes true. Did some asian guy with good study habits have a lot of kids a long time ago?

  • @xXmiomoXx I would go with it being more about Asian parents typically being extremely discipline, but sure. haha

  • @xXmiomoXx Asian cultures historically preferred those people who could study well because those who could study well got some of the best jobs (working for the government) because they could pass the qualifying tests. So, probably.

  • @aqua1993 Of course, when I say Asian cultures, I mostly mean Jackie Chan.

  • @aqua1993 I guess so but for most of the time the tests favored aristocrats who could afford to go to school to learn the stuff. Still, even when the scholars were the ones targeted, having brains doesn't always mean you get the chicks, amirite?

  • @xXmiomoXx Damn, right my man! Damn right....

  • @xXmiomoXx There was one time in China where hundreds of thousands of people spent their lives studying, trying to move up in the social pyramid, because taking a test, and passing that test, was the only way to move up. So you're actually pretty spot on.

  • @xXmiomoXx As a diligent asian student, I can tell you that good study habits are not hereditary. However, good study habits are prized within the asian society. If you study hard and get decent grades, there will be more people to praise you than if you exercised daily and gained a chiseled body. They are both great accomplishments, but you would gain more support from those around you for being "smart"(parents, teachers, academic peers), than being chiseled(girls...and other guys).

  • @dropkickcorpse what if said chiseled person plays sports and later on in life decides to go pro who would have more support when doing what they like ?

  • @shivam1221 If said chiseled person lived in a small village were his/her only ticket to success depends on his/her athletic ability, then it yes is would be valued more than than academic intelligence. What is important in Asian culture is that a child tries to achieve the greater good. The child, above all, must be selfless and must support his/her parents through life.Traditionally, an Asian child will pick whatever path that benefits the family, even at his/her own expense.

  • what is the difference between epigenetics and genetic memory?

  • wat?

  • "and they totally went ape crackers" I laughed so hard

  • Good, with this information, I can plan on how to biologically program ourselves to make us more superior without having to go through uncertain factors which might cause our epigenetics to do unpredictable decisions. Soon, we will all be superhumans, muahahaha XD!
