@Senderfly : First thing: you can learn a lot on your own, with no teacher if you're really dedicated. Just use method books, and YouTube (especially Nina Perlove). Also, even if you want to do jazz, start listening to a lot of classical music - it'll help your interpretation later on, otherwise you'll be useless. I mean, listen to piano, cello, oboe, trumpet, double bass, saxophone, harp, xylophone, drums - everything. Mozart, Schumann, Schubert, Beethoven, Chopin, Bach ...
My dad bought me a flute for Christmas, I had already learned the flute when I was in year 2 but that was ages ago. I still remember how to assemble it but I'm still not sure where to put my fingers. It's in a book I have, but I can't find it!!
Do not tell the kids to use the Bb thumb! That comes much later. What about a B natural or a high F sharp? Please think aabout what you are telling these kids.
FOR THE NEW FLUTE PLAYERS: PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW ANY ADVICE HERE!!!
@midistew haha thx... im just starting band and when i picked my instrument i RLLY wanted flute but i had trouble even making the right noise!! once i figured that out, i came here, but i guess that was a bad idea... thx 4 lettin me know
This June I will have played Flute for ten years, I've also tutored many people, and junior directed a band. I know that a great deal of the people I taught would not find this helpful. Especially if they have a beginning flute book, in which case they tell you different things completely then what you are saying. Longer videos might also help, as well as more close ups on your mouth, fingers and keys. Perhaps doing things more than once as well. This is for all of your vids. :)
Hm... I was taught to automatically put my thumb on the neutral B key... I've played for about 5 years and more than 70% of the music I play is in sharp... I don't see how it is easier to play in flat than sharp.
Why should your thumb automatically go on the B flat, do you play everything in f major??? I noticed when you were doing demonstrations in your other videos you always play in f major too, surely it would be more appropriate to teach beginners in C or at least tell them if your using another key!
I wanna know how to play A sharp for my grade 2

if your learning dont watch these videos, nina perlove is a much better flautist, and isnt teaching you the rubbish that this lady is!!
(and as a general rule keep your LH thumb on the b thumb key, not the Bb one.)

No. Your thumb doesn't stay on the Bb key. It's generally only used for trills or very fast passages as a bit of a "short cut".
