@CertifiedBad4ss I'm a teacher and I'd let my 13 year old students manipulate lithium way before I let you do so. Kids aren't stupid, they actually are impressively more intelligent than their parents ;)
Good video but you cant get sodium from just burning lithium potassium is much more reactive than sodium the grey solid was lithium because lithium is grey and burns red and also sodium doesnt burn at a extremely high temp in burns at 96 degrees celsius
the problem is you will get magnesium compounds together with the sodium and there really hard to remove so the electrolysis is better all u need is around 2 or 3 9v batteries and connect them then put the 2 electrodes make sure sodium doesnt touch the positive electrode or boom
If that was sodium it would have been bright yellow. And like I said on your other video, save this for a proper laboratory. I've been burned by molten silver and a sodium burn would be much worse. Don't try things like this.
Well done, also zinc magnesium and aluminium are all a cheaper substitute for the lithium as they will do just as good job, keep doing the science little dude
12 year olds shouldn't have access to neither a blowtorch nor alkali metals.
Nice vid anyway tho.

that was awesome ! have you ever heard that you can produce sodium metal from sodium hydroxide a 12 volt current and a grafite rod ?

i recently made a video of extracting lithium from AA battery... what would you mix with the Lithium Metal to produce the Sodium?

yes, but the ultimate lithium energizer batteries are 2-3$ per battery.
for 2-3$ you can get lots of Mg.
ChemXu 2 years ago
@ChemXu ahh but the difference is one you would have to purchase online. the other you could just go to the store and buy

You can;t be serious! When you tested it the colour spectrum of the flame is clearly crimson, not even close to being the yellow spectrum of sodium.

@TheAmateurChemist the camera often distorts colours in violent high energy reactions.

Keep on experimenting, you have a bright future if you keep on with the science.

Very nice, but Mg is much cheaper and easier to get the lithium.

good info, thanks

@ChemXu
But lithium and sodium are more fun!! Anyway, if you need lithium, just strip down a lithium battery - loads of videos on doing that are on YouTube.
