I certainly do not agree with the christian perspective that we should bring them to the city gates and stone them to death, let the gays get married and focus on the more important issues like animal testing and or starvation.

I'm an Athiest, but I come from a christian family and grew up in a roughly 50/50 athiest / christian society. Even so, I'd be hard pushed to find anyone I know who would tried to defend the entirity of the bible as absolute literal truth.
Finding flaws in the bible, either moral or historical, doesn't invalidate a belief in God, just in the book about him.
