I am an expert on opera. And while I prefer the Grammy performance, I have NO problem with Aretha Franklin's performance of Nessun Dorma. I much prefer this than Paul Potts. Ms. Franklin knows she is doing a soul interpretation of the aria. The key being interpretation. What Paul Potts does is use BAD operatic technique in an attempt to imitate truly great opera performers. Ms. Franklin is imitating no one. She is interpreting and performing while remaining true to the SPIRIT of the music.
I think the opera connoiseurs are missing the point of this performance. Aretha is not singing opera, she is simply taking an opera lyrics into her soul genre. If you look at it from this perspective, it is a creative performnce.

This song was meant for a tenor's voice, and she changed how it was meant to be sung. A queen of soul indeed, but she didn't do this song justice at all - it's the gold standard that only honed tenors can do well. Nessun Dorma is definitely one of those songs where 'personalising' doesn't work. I only ever want to hear a tenor do it justice!
The singing isn't that bad; at least she knows the tune, but the noise is so awful in the background. Was everyone really talking while she sang? I would have put more dress on too. But I appreciate her trying the song and glad to know an R&B singer knows & appreciates this genre. And Pavarotti doesn't have her rhythm if you've heard him sing pop; he misses the feel of the song & sings it too loud.

Her mistake was not to sing it - I fell on the floor, awestruck, at the time - but to try to repeat this once-in-a lifetime gig.

@MedlynMartin - people don't criticize Aretha's ability to sing. She is great in her own repertory. They just criticize her ability to sing opera. If an opera singer would've tried some of Aretha's songs and did it in operatic style many posters would've criticize him or her just as much. Why don't you try and listen to some great opera singers - both tenors and sopranos. Of all skin colors.

there was so much noise from the applause of the crowd that i cant actually hear the song for all the noise. We know that Aretha can sing this song easily and there is another video in which the master actually asks her to sing for him. he had absolute confidence in her and this is proven, go on have a listen

This song was meant for a tenor's voice, and she changed how it was meant to be sung. A queen of soul indeed, but she didn't do this song justice at all - it's the gold standard that only honed tenors can do well. Nessun Dorma is definitely one of those songs where 'personalising' doesn't work. I only ever want to hear a tenor do it justice!

The singing isn't that bad; at least she knows the tune, but the noise is so awful in the background. Was everyone really talking while she sang? I would have put more dress on too. But I appreciate her trying the song and glad to know an R&B singer knows & appreciates this genre. And Pavarotti doesn't have her rhythm if you've heard him sing pop; he misses the feel of the song & sings it too loud.

I love Aretha but this was awful.

She was to be a last minute replacement to Pavarotti. She should have stuck to R&B.
She doesnt speak Italian and didnt know the words. No diction and no clarity.
Classical Arias such as this are to be performed as written and not changed with the "artists" personal rendition.
She is undoubtedly the "The Queen of Soul" and should stay away from Opera.
This was 1998 and I still can't get over it.

Musical traditions differ for style which would include emoting, vibrato etc. However, artistry and artists are compelled to give respect (also known as consideration) for a counterpart's craft. American Soul music parallels and actually stands as a type of classical music. Within this style Aretha Franklin is a Master...within classical music considering her certain ability she demonstrates and performs as diva! Fuh sho!

Ok, this looks lousy. BUT - just go to the 1998 video, shut up, and listen. She filled in for someone who didn't show (maybe Pavoratti?), and I saw it when it was originally broadcast. Her mistake was not to sing it - I fell on the floor, awestruck, at the time - but to try to repeat this once-in-a lifetime gig.
Give her credit for class, for trying this at all. (Much, MUCH better in 1998.)
