Thanks for uploading. This is a really cool song. The lyrics, guitar sound, everything about it culminates it into a great song. And I think wow, this is my favorite Kink's song, but no wait there are a million other KInks favorites just as good. How amazing that they could create so many good songs in one life time...so glad to be in this century to hear & experience such awesome music
Time goes on as we get older and watch as our lives start slipping away. The flood of emotions that come over you as you do think of past loves, heartbreak and the lose of those you love. Will anyone remember us? What a great song.
@ktel60 Agreed that Dave plays one hell of a guitar. It is raw (the way he wanted it, slicing up the speakers and so forth) more guitar would be too distorted.
Saw them at the Uptown Theatre in Milwaukee in December, 1974. This and Lola Vs. the Powerman are my favs but they've done so much good work that it's silly to really try to pick one.
This song has ALWAYS knocked me out. Everything about it fits beautifully. God Bless The Kinks.
No. SchoolBoys In Disgrace tour. Elliot Murphy was the backup. They'd played the Riverside theatre that previous April and did Soap Opera there. Liked that but this was better. School Boys is an awesome album.
@bendbadgersteve Arggh - I much prefer Schoolboys to Soap Opera - so I must have seen them in Milwaukee in 1975 when they did Soap Opera - road trip from UW-Madison doncha know! I was there in 1974 so that means I missed 'em.
Hell, I may have my dates wrong but I KNOW I saw them at the Riverside in the spring doing Soap Opera and the Uptown in the winter doing Schoolboys w/ Elliot Murphy backing them up. It would have been 74-75. Before Sleepwalker came out.
I remember back in 89 going to work with t-shirt with the Schoolboys' front cover picture on it :). Hope I'm not the only one who loved that LP and Soap Opera. What a find it was for me at the time.
I saw them at the Paramount in Seattle in 1977. The house was less than half full but Ray revved up the audience and soon it seemed like the house was full! Best show I've ever seen--ever!
@ThisIsRuthie A real slow cooker... couldn't fully appreciate this when I was a younger Kinks fan. Now it's one of my all-time fav's. Awesome chord changes and emotional ferocity...
God, this takes me back. This has to be one of the few, really great, rock love songs. It's so damn powerful, and the words work PERFECTLY with the melody.
THE KINKS STILL THE GREATEST ROCK BAND OF ALL TIME, RAY DAVIES THE GREATEST SONGWRITER OF ALL TIME AND DAVE DAVIES THE MOST UNDER RATED GUITAR HERO OF ALL TIME. GOD SAVE THE KINKS AND ALL THEIR FANS WHO HAVE SUPPORTED THEM OVER THE YEARS THROUGH THE HIGHS AND LOWS. THANK YOU FOR THE DAYS RAY! AND FOR ALL WE KNOW THEY STILL MAY HAVE ALONG WAY TO GO. YOU CANT STOP THE MUSIC OR THE KINKS. - Frank Lima, The Montvale, New Jersey Hillbilly Boy, aka Dan the Fan
Peter Quaife and Mick Avory - most underated drummer and bass player in history of music also... even though Mick ain't in this vid, he's clearly the bass player of the kinks.
Not sure what you're saying but Mick Avory the drummer is clearly in the video, and you can catch a glimpse of the bassist probably John Dalton although this is circa 1975-76 around the time he left. The more anonymous guys are the brass guys - Cotton, Brown, Beecham, et al. I also nominate John Gosling as the most under-appreciated Kink.
I was just noting that Ray and Dave are the only two who get credit for the kinks... But Peter Quaife and Mick Avory are so talented and underrated... And reading what i said, i accidentally typed "Mick" when i meant to say "pete"
avivalabeat: When they performed this concert as part of the "Schoolboys In Disgrace" tour, it was presented with a film in the background, of the stage showing Ray/"Norman" walking the city streets, seeing the love he sings about, everywhere he goes, and every woman has a mask with that face he misses so much! A great song, gret show and words to live by: Unfortunately, "yesterday's gone, and that's a fact, now there's No More Looking Back!" Thanks for the post!
This video was posted a few years back, and then was removed. I'm just glad it's back; Every well known band/group reaches a point in their history when their sound has to go through a metamorphosis. This song represents that change for the Kinks, who went on to do some great stuff in the late 70 and early 80's. I especially love the brass section. Bravo vivalabeat !!!
Favorite song off my favorite album of all time!!! :)

This is such a great song that I am just starting to listen. I have loved the Kinks for a long time
This is definitely a live version buit they are so faithful to their own music that it almost sound like the studio version
I just read that this year they are making the movie School Boys in Disgrace that is going to be great!!

This song gives me chills every time I hear it. "Perhaps some day I'll stop needing you,
Then maybe one day I'll be free of you.
Aw, but lately I've been goin' to
all the places that remind me of you . . ."
A love lost . . . . Freakin' heartbreaking — and beautiful

But lately I've been going to
All the places that we once knew,
And just when I think that I am free of you
I keep seeing the things that remind me of you,
And just when I think you're out of my head
I hear a song that you sang or see a book that you read.
Then you're in every bar, you're in every café,
You're driving every car, I see you everyday,
But you're not really there 'cause you belong to yesterday.
