@minecraftstarful No, they were born two years apart in 1937 and 1939, Phil on the left is the younger, and Don the older, it will be Dons 75th birthday tomorrow February 1st.
In 1958 when this song came out it was banned from air play on numerous radio stations around the country for being pornographic. A girl sleeping with her boyfriend.. dumb but true
Can't get enough of the Bros, but completely agree with the comment on the "arrangement". That was live TV for you back in the day...Got a chance to meet Phil Everly a few years ago...chatted about the guitar tuning, and still get a thrill looking at the picture of me with him....
Never heard this version before, but the person responsible for adding the idiotic horn section and sax arrangement to this American classic should be taken to a place outside of town and summarily shot.
@GereDJ That's a similar way of saying something Garfield The Cat says sometimes. He says sometimes, "People who do that should be drug out into the street and shot".
The Arranger, some fellow born in 1919, thinks the cornball horns will "sell it" to the adults in front of the TV. But the guy they hired "wasn't so hot". I want to smack him on the forehead til his toupee falls off. Ok sorry, he's just doing his job. - I just want to have him sit this one out and let Chet Atkins do the arrangement. As usual for this period the brothers sang perfectly & played in that way that foreshadowed modern rock.
I agree about the horns. I love the sound of horns but their sound here is totally inappropriate. Rock 'n' Roll or any such-related music was not widely accepted back then and stuff like that just happened as a matter of course. Also, their sound was so radical for the time. The musical director of the show probably thought that adding horns would somehow relate their sound to the more traditional forms of music that were popular back then and appealed to the majority of the viewing audience.
That was the TV show's orchestra. Unfortunately that was done a lot in those days to rock acts when they appeared on TV shows. The TV show was used to big band style singers who would not have clashed so much with the orchestra. Check out the Everlys on the alma Cogan Show for a clip of them sounding like they should.
Clearly they were required to 'clean it up' for the tv audience... the dropped 'naughty' verse, the syrupy horn section... and the tempo is slowed down to make it more conventional... less frantic and raucous, so as not to get slammed as rock & rollers making 'devil music' as was happening to others. Elvis Presley for instance. The Everly Bros records were a big influence on me in my childhood. I am just as big a fan still today. It was GREAT to see this unique performance. Thanks for posting it
I agree with your comments although my impression is that the musical accompaniment was dictated by the house band/orchestra that played on the specific TV show. Almost all rock acts had this occur to them in the 50's and 60's on TV. For a really great live TV performance, check out the Brother's 1961 appearance on The Alma Cogan Show in the UK with their backup being the Crickets. Amazing!
Great song, but god that TV orchestra accompaniment takes away from their sound. The Everlys were so much better when they were permitted to play their music as they made it. Check out their appearances on the Alma Cogan Show live on YouTube and you'll see what I mean.
Yes I totaly agree with you, on the Alma Cogan Show the are backed by the Crickets, How much better could it get? I have seen them live at least 15 times, They are the best.
