Japan's light water reactors are 40 plus yrs old based on designs containing a lot of unnecessary sophisticated complicated components when they could has sold HTGR reactors. The reason is HTGR reactors are cheaper than light water reactors and requires very little or almost no safety features and servicing, whereas light water reactors are the reversed & therefore are money making markets for services and safety technological features. One wonders why people in the mass media missed those facts
High-temperature helium gas-cooled reactors are meltdown-proof & are inherently self-shutting down by nature when their temperatures goes up beyond their designers specifications. They're made out of carbides- and nitrides-based ceramics-based materials. Japan's light water reactors requires too much expensive servicing and expensive safety technological features that are not needed in high-temperature helium gas-cooled reactors. The reason for this situation is to create a market for services.
The Japanese has used the wrong type of reactors w/c you Americans sold to them. You could have sold them the high temperature helium gas-cooled reactors that has an inherent nature to lower down their chain reaction whenever their temperature becomes higher than required by their designers. Instead you sold them reactors that are unnecessarily complex and expensive to maintain and requires a lot of safety technologies features not required by HTGR nuclear power plants!
BTW. Japan's light water reactors are 40 plus yrs old based on designs containing a lot of unnecessary sophisticated complicated components when they could has sold HTGR reactors. The reason is HTGR reactors are cheaper than light water reactors and requires very little or almost no safety features and servicing, whereas light water reactors are the reversed & therefore are money making markets for services and safety technological features. One wonders why people in the mass media missed those facts

The Japanese has used the wrong type of reactors w/c you Americans sold to them. You could have sold them the high temperature helium gas-cooled reactors that has an inherent nature to lower down their chain reaction whenever their temperature becomes higher than required by their designers. BTW. There was not enough space to mention in post below that the islands were uninhabitable for decades, and on a few occasions some ships were in the vicinity of the prevailing winds and people were hurt. If you think this just a problem for someone else? In Vernon Vermont USA there is a plant that is in disrepair and has been leaking nuclear isotopes. The people are trying to close it down. It was designed to operate until 2012. The NRC wants it to remain open another 20 years with no place for spent fuel storage. anybody see the docunentary the battle for chernobyl that was on discovery ? a real eye opener if it wasnt for thousands of ukrainians / russians basicly going on a suicide mission to contain the reactor europe would of been renderd a radioactive waste land .Ten years ago i used to know someone who lived in yorkshire uk who developed thyroid cancer he was told his cancer was caused by fall out from chernobyl so i think the reactors going bang in japan should be taken seriously by everybody

To the extent that the fallout rains into the ocean, that doesn't mean it has gone away.
Also, much of the food in the US is grown in California. And dairy products concentrate radioactivity. Seaweed and miso are considered to have some protective affects against radiation poisoning. At least the Japanese are lucky in that.

Who knows, if the US government hadn't been harassing wikileaks, maybe this cable would have been released in time for the Japanese to have beefed up their
