I think that mario and luigi superstar saga sprites are the 2nd most commonly used, 1st is Super Mario World.

Yeh, I LOVE the animations in Mario and Luigi games.  They are so fluid, because each animation has so many sprite-frames. The developers did a great job animating everything and getting a good solid style down.
