this was like my first introduction to the "mambo" and I thought it was like the most beautiful dance in the world when I first saw it (granted I was 9)
When I was younger, the Sharks were my favourite in everything. Now, they are my favourites in everything apart from this dance. The Jets were more fun to watch. I still love Anita and Bernardo.
Hrm. The Jets win in technique, but the Sharks DEFINITELY got more swagger. And from my years in dance, technique don't mean a thing if you can't get the crowd excited.
Am I the only one who thought the white people won this particular scene? the puerto ricans were great , yes , they dominated the movie but in this scene I felt the white people killed it, Riff did tricks & danced amazingly and him & his gf were more spicy in my opinion . Because the puerto ricans kept doing the same thing in their circle. And I was surprised to see the black man at 0:45 ;o
@emofolkie yeah....I was sniggering to myself when I saw Ice 'bust some Mambo moves'....awkward step backs and hip swivels, very funny though. I just love it when Baby John randomly waltzes through the stand off!!! Haha fave part in that scene :D
It's amazing Russ Tamblyn got cast as Riff, the leader of the Jets, when he's an actor and an acrobat, not a dancer. In Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, another great musical, he did some dancing but mainly did acrobatic stuff. I love him best in Disney's Tom Thumb.
Don't know why, but I can't keep my eyes off the puerto Ricans whenever they are doing anything especially dancing. There just hot! All of em,even when riff does the backflips and that I think Anita&Bernardo are just the best thing like ever...love em! Team Sharks FTW
Wow, it's like gangs fight in the comments ! I think all the beauty of this scene is in the fact that they all dance amazingly, and together, even if it's a fight. The tension and the thought of destroying each other kinda disappear in the dance.
@RRH1011 Why? Mambo was originally Cuban with a Mexican influence. The original writier of the musical was Jewish, and admitted he never considered a difference among Latin cultures.
@naomi2155967 , the reason why some people think the Puerto Ricans won is the stereotype that somehow Latins can dance better, considering only Rita Moreno was the only Puerto Rican in the cast. Just watch Ice dance, can any of the Sharks match his moves? I was just amazed at how Tucker Smith, for his height can just throw his leg right up in the air whereas everybody else just goes half-way or even barely off the ground.
@emelzbee, ironic that some of these "Puerto Ricans" used to play Jets on stage. Again, this perception how Latins are supposedly better dancers. The best dancer I see so far was Tucker Smith.
@emelzbee Dude ,spainish dancing is just sex standing up lmfao.I'll get the same results by having sex with my girlfriend standing up in the shower .BLAHAHA!!!
I was in awe when i had seen her also in the Berkeley Rep this past Friday^_^ I had the chance to see her front row^_^ I first saw the film Westside Story when i was in the 4th grade and fell in love with it. Rita Moreno has been my idol ever since, she inspired me into joining Drama class in middle school as well as in high school, and community theater during my junior college years. It was an honor to see her
Amazing!..just had the honor of seeing Rita Moreno at the Berkeley Rep. with her autobiographical show: Life Without Makeup..so excellent. At the end of the show, when the lights were up and she was taking her bows, I was holding up the original sound track album of West Side Story..she gave me a nod and a smile.! What an impact this movie had on me at 11 years old. And now at 60..Wow! Her motto is "Keep Moving".and that is what I am going to do.. "Mambo!"

I like the ending. The instruments. How its, loud and abrasive, cool yet power full, smooth and light, sweet and caring. And then next scene.

@lulzIridetheshortbus Man we just played this (last show yesterday) and man he KILLED it. It was so good.
By the way, the screaming part is actually the 2nd part, which is weird. He also has the crazy part at the end of America!
