  • My left ear learned a lot from this video

  • Amazing ability to communicate concepts, doesn't rush, and couldn't be more polite. Your passion to teach shines through. Looks like I found my new professor!

  • Hello and thank you for your kind comments. Enjoy your journey!

    George

  • Your lessons are fantastic. But i have 1 unrelated question - i just bought a bass and now after a couple day of playing 1st fret doesn'T produce any clear tones anymore, only buzzing. Could it be because i messed a bit with the bridge? I did that because on the first day a screw fell out of the bridge and i lost the spring. so i screwed them a little tighter so that they don't fall out. Would be awesome if someone could help. Cheers!

  • Hello. I'm happy to see you like my lessons.

There are two possible causes (that I can "see" right now) that could lead to this effect:

    1. The action (the height of the strings at the bridge) is incorrect

    2. The bass neck is convex instead of concave.

Both issues can easily be adjusted by someone with knowledge and skills.

I suggest you take your bass to a pro for a setup or check out some of the bass setup videos on You Tube to get further insight.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • Totally wish this dude was my grandpa

  • your awesome man! can't wait to learn more!

  • Thanks. You are welcome to learn much more via my subscription-based series of bass lessons. The step-by-step lessons are available through my website.

    Kind regards,

    George

  • I don't get that muted thumping sound when I put my left hand across all the strings. What does that mean? They still ring.

  • It seems as though you may be pushing down on the strings too much. I suggest you gradually let go of your hand pressure until you hear only the muted sound.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • Woo~! Now I don't have to stay after school even longer after band practice. Thank you :D

Love your accent by the way.

  • Thanks for your message. Also, thanks Gabby for putting up The Planets on your channel. (I played that suite a few times as a double bassist in a symphony orchestra.)

    Kind regards,

    George

  • I've been playing 6 string for 15 years or so, and just suddenly got the impulse to trade on of my strats for a p-bass. I've probably spent more time over the last weekend playing bass then I have 6 string in the last several months!

  • I am happy to see you enjoy bass. Thanks for your post.

    George

  • Wonder if this is how modern drum machines created the drum kicks from this?

  • Sir, i boutght a JBass today and you just made my day. I'm feeling like Adam Nitti i tell ya :D

  • Yeah! Thanks for your enthusiasm.

    George

  • I swear .. You look like Billy Sheehan in the thumbnail !

  • I'm brand new to Bass. I don't want to learn how to just play random music on it, I'd like to learn it right. Basics, and all so I may compose. I'm not really use to playing stringed instruments - So I'm pretty clueless. So far, your first couple of videos are really helping me; But I was wondering, because my first pickup is lower than my second, unlike yours. Am I to place my thumb there? If so, it feels really unnatural. Is there an alternate way to place it?

  • Thanks for your post.

You can alter the height of your pickups to suit both the sound (output and balance) and your thumb placement.

If you tell me which bass you have I may be able to help more.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline Oh, I see! Like I said, I know pretty much nothing about this sort of stuff. I've been playing wind instruments for years. It's a Cort, and thank you so much for your help, by the way. :)

  • Thank you for doing this great job for everyone, George.

I have learned alot of new things.

I'm now playing in a band with my friends on a stage because of you.

You are doing a great job.

  • Wow - that's possibly the best endorsement I've seen!

Thanks ... wishing you much success.

    George

  • Your really good at teaching.

  • Thank you for showing your appreciation.

    George

  • Lol I just got my bass :) I play guitarron which is like a mexican bass but it's totally different o:

  • Very cool - I love guitarron!

    Bass is Bass :-)

    George

  • i remember looking at this video when i just started playing:)

  • Thanks for checking in again.

    George

  • Good pacing and important fundamental stuff. This isn't my first instrument so I know about all the tedious steps in the beginning that most people like to skip. Thanks for making the basics easy!

  • Hello and thanks for your informed comment.

    George

  • my worship team leader let me borrow a bass and said to look on youtube so i learned how to play by youtube and myself and next thing you know i am rockin it out the week after on my worship team

    thanks

  • "and when i go to strike the g-string..."

    *giggles*

    lol

  • thanks george!!

  • ... and another Thank-You to you too.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline thanks

  • I've been trying to start a band for over a year now, but we just couldn't find a bassist. After a lot of frustration, I pulled my brother's old guitar out of the closet, and have been playing it and trying to learn it. These videos are great for that. I'm just on lesson 2, and I feel like I'm making great progress. Thanks, George.

BTW: Is there a way to write tabs in braille? As my screen name suggests, I am blind. I'd have to memorize beforehand regardless, but braille tabs would help a lot.

  • Hello and thanks for your post. I did some online research in relation to tabs in braille, but have had no tangible results yet.

I am happy that you can benefit from my You Tube lessons. I do try to explain what people see, so its good to find that technique works to some degree.

    Kind regards,

    George

  • All videos of BassLessonsOnline are great ;) (btw with what kinda potato did you record this?) :D

  • nice lessions just perfect for true beginners )

Im looking for a good bass guitar and a friend of mine want sell me his old bass Bronco Bass Fender... is it good for me?

  • The Fender (Squier?)* Bronco is fine. I owned one for a while.

It is a short-scale bass, however, so make sure it feels and sounds good.

    * The original Fender short-scale bass is the Mustang model.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline

thanx a lot but i bought a jazz bass not new but still good.. now im on your second lession...

my problem is when i try playing something different i can't use 2 fingers ! i use forefinger more than middlefinger. as example i follow different "easy level" tabs but still can coordinate my fingers..

    how da hell?

  • If you cannot get to a qualified face-to-face bass teacher, I suggest you take a look at what my subscription course has to offer (link in the Description box above). My lessons describe and demonstrate exercises (such as those you apparently need) in a step-by-step manner.

    Kind regards,

    George

  • Your website won't work for me :(

I'm in France, maybe there is a link?

    Anyway, loving the lessons :)

  • Can you tell me what does not work? Any error messages? Maybe then I can replicate and correct the fault.

I am happy to see you love the lessons :)

    Thanks,

    George

  • hi Ive never played an instrument but i want to learn how to play bass guitar can you suggest a good bass guitar to by for a starter?

  • Start your search with Squier, Yamaha, and Ibanez basses. You will eventually see what you like (other brands too) ... then test in a shop.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • hi george

mmm im currently learning drums and i want to learn bass too so what do you will it be harder to learn 2 instruments side by side?

  • Not really - drums and bass complement each other so well that you will benefit from finding out each instrument's role and playing technique.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline

so what you are saying is that it will be easy to learn the bass because drums do complement bass.

so i am getting a bass for christmas, what company will be good (is java good)?

  • Of course it depends on your learning abilities, too.

I don't know Java basses? Usually we get what we pay for.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • great practice video. im getting a Bass guitar for christmas but im left handed so its been pretty hard finding a good beggining one. whats your opinion on the Dean Edge 09? I dont need an expensive bass but just a beginners one. Also I play guitar and have got really good at it, do many of the skills from normal guitar transfer to Bass? Thank you

  • Thanks for your post. Having a guitar playing background will help a lot for bass playing. However, the "bass player mentality" is usually different to that of the guitarist. Although you can transfer many guitar playing techniques to bass, I would not recommend that for the long term.

    Dean basses are fine.

    George

  • ROCK ON GEORGE!!! <3

  • george thanks for the lessons...they are very clear...

  • Practice good, "loose" technique. Fast songs work best when the players are relaxed.

    Kind regards,

    George

  • George...thank you so much..playing bass is on the top of my bucket list..very clear fun lessons..again thank you!..you rock!!

  • Excellent! Thanks for your post.

    George

  • Thank you very much George, I've just got my bass and I didn't know where to start. You are very generous free teaching online.

    Ana (Spain)

  • Thank you, Ana. I'm happy you found my channel.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

P.S. When I lived in Europe, I visited Spain many times; I always loved the ever-present musical vibe of everyone there.

  • thanks a lot George, you r the best teacher ever :)

  • Thanks for your kind comment.

    George

  • hey george have never picked up a bass before hopefully i can get over my intitial terrible rythym and fingering, gonna watch all your vids though! great work

  • Excellent. Thanks for your trust.

    George

  • I have...i guess its a little bar, to the left of my pick ups...whats up with it?

  • Thumb rest? If that's not it, please show a photo.

    George

  • thank you so much) it's a big luck to find you here. you make me feel more comfortable and confident about my first bass guitar)

    Natasha from Russia)

  • Thank you, Natasha.

I am happy to see you are comfortable with my teaching style.

    Enjoy your progress!

    George

  • 33 people can't afford a bass.

  • god bless you Gorge..more uploads please

  • Thanks for your kind comment and request for more. I am currently busy making more videos for my Intermediate to Advanced course of Bass Lessons Online. However, eventually I will add more bass videos to You Tube.

    George

  • Is it easier to play Bass while standing up? Or sitting?

  • In my opinion, one position is not easier (nor better) than the other. However, I suggest you get equally comfortable with sitting and standing while playing bass.

    George

  • its just me or this video is very relaxing?

  • has anyone ever told you, you look like an older sam merlot from true blood? :)

  • I've actually been wondering how you're meant to fingerwalk properly, so this actually helps quite a bit. thanks.

  • I'm glad I could help with your fingerwalk. Thanks for posting.

    George

  • what type of bass would you say is best for begingers ?

  • Without getting into detail about what would suit you best, look at the Squier range of basses.

    George

  • is it ok for me to practice bass stuff on my acoustic guitar... just until i get my bass?? help

  • Yep, that's fine. That is exactly what I did before I got my first bass.

    George

  • I'm a drummer wanting to learn bass and I was wondering if I could use drum rudiments such as paradiddles and doubles to my strumming hand

  • That is perfect. I used to use drum rudiments often myself for bass technique.

    George

  • I'm a drummer wanting to learn bass and I was curious if I could apply rudiments such as paradidles and doubles to playing the bass

  • Hello and thanks for your requests.

There could be (a combination of) numerous reasons for string rattle. They range from an incorrect bass set up, to insufficient pressure and/or incorrect position of your left hand or its fingers, to an untuned bass (too low) etc.

I recommend you get someone knowledgeable to take a look at your bass and your technique.

If none of the above apply, and you have been playing bass for only a few days, then it is just a matter of strength development.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline for the two fingers and the thum it doesnt feel right when i put my thum at the back

  • Excuse me! Do you teach us how to read notes on guitar? Not the scores, but the on the guitar themselves. Cause I'm self-learning at the moment due to the lack of money for any courses.

  • Yes, my subscription-based course (available via the link in the Description box above) teaches all notes on the bass guitar within the first 8 lessons (the first month of subscription). Music reading is also taught in my course.

I do not, however, have any free lessons on You Tube on Note Identification or Note Reading. But you will find such lessons on You Tube.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • Hey Sir. can i ask how much a bass cost? :) thanks for the video! ^^.

  • I am happy to see you appreciate the bass lesson video.

Bass prices vary enormously. You can get a bass in almost any price range. Usually you get what you pay for. Prices will also depend on where you live (or where you purchase).

    Kind regards,

    George

  • I'm trying to learn bass for metal/ hardcore style rock and I see most of the bassists using a pick. Would it sound better for that music with using a pick or fingers? Thanks, Rachel.

  • Hello Rachel and thanks for your query.

Pick vs fingers depends on who you listen to. The split is about 50/50.

Pick makes very fast playing easy, and fingerstyle gives a fatter sound.

I always choose what suits the song best.

    Kind regards,

    George

  • Hello, just had a question for you, if you could answer it that would be amazing. I have recently taken an interest in bass, i tried playing guitar and drums when i was younger and didn't really enjoy it and drums never really stuck, I love music and would love to learn how to play but was wondering what you recommend for someone who has never even held a bass before and wants to play? Should i get a bass and lessons or start with your online lessons? thanks for taking the time to read this.

  • Hey um question for ya ; I just bought my first bass today, with no previous experience even holding one, and when i try playing fingerstyle, it doesnt sound right..sorry i dont know the proper word to describe it.. but im wondering if its how im doing it, or if its just the strings i have.. if you'd like i could post a response to this vid to show you how it sounds.. thanks in advance, Sydney

  • Hello Sydney, and thanks for your queries.

Unless you have already had some experience at least in playing a stringed instrument such as guitar, you would not get a good sound on the first day. That's where at least one lesson from a qualified bass teacher would come in handy.

To begin with, is your bass tuned correctly?

You are most welcome to post a video if you wish - I'll take a look.

    Kind regards,

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline

Thanks George, my boyfriend figured it out for me lol, I just wasnt holding the strings hard enough >.<

I've learnt 2 songs already, and I'm thinking of posting some vids of me playing them sometime in the future (:

  • That's great news! Thanks for posting.

    George

  • Hi, Im learning my first steps here. Your first viedo was perfect. I have question to this part. Left hand is pressing strings or is just lying on strings? I cant get short tones like you do. Thx for anwer.

  • Yes, left hand is just lying on the strings without a lot of pressure - experiment until you get the "thump".

    Thanks for your kind comment.

    George

  • hey i was wondering im a beginner thats left handed useing a right handed guitar and have been useing a pic is useing ure fingers better

  • It depends on the sound you want and are happy with. Over time, I have learned many techniques, including pick playing, fingerstyle, slap and more.

    George

  • thanks alot for great work

  • hi I'm from the uk.I am a total beginner, just picked up a bass. your lessons look good so I'm going to follow you and see how it goes , cheers then, keith

  • Thanks Keith, that's excellent.

    I wish you happy progress!

    George

  • Only 240p? What is this, Africa?

    Great lesson though.

  • i have a question if u could answer it please. my bass is a Granite Nb-something...its a cheap bass i bought it only to get started...it has two pickups which are in the classic Precision pickup style...like the set of pickups close to the bridge in your bass shown in the video..but they have the bolts which keep them in place up and down the pickups not the side( underneath the strings) which is really uncomfortable for fingerpicking...what should i do? thanks...( im using the bridge instead)

  • @manosarrr close to the neck*

  • I think I know the pickup style you are referring to. However, please send me a link to a photo (via a PM) so I can take a look and make sure I can give you the best advice.

    George

  • Excellent teaching style, many thanks. [From a conservatoire trained musician!]

  • Thank you for your endorsement.

    Greetings from Down Under Australia!

    George

  • thank you body,greetings from peru,south america

  • Thanks for checking in.

    Greetings from Australia!

    George

  • Hi George

I just got a bass guitar but when I press in on the fret and strum the string vibrates against the other frets and im not sure what is causing it, can you help?

  • There could be so many causes; anything from the way is bass is (incorrectly) set up, to the way you strike or fret the bass. It would be best to get someone knowledgeable to take a look. Maybe just one lesson from a qualified bass player will help you sort things out.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • Thanks George!

  • No worries - thanks for checking in!

    George

  • will these lessons help me if i want to play metal songs (on bass of course)

  • @panagiwths100 This are the basics EVERY bass player should know.

  • Great video George, thanks very much for posting

  • Thanks for your kind comments. I'm glad you found the video useful.

    George

  • hello sir. First of all, I would like to thank you for making such an awesome lesson. Second, I would like to ask a quick question about the form of my plucking hand/arm. It seems that whenever I set up my plucking hand, my wrist bends a lot on its own. I know this is bad. I would like to know how far my wrist can bend on its own while I play. Thanks in advance.

  • Please post a video of the occurrence so I can take a look and comment.

    Thanks,

    George

  • And the final (well the questions werent a couple though)

how do i know when I have to change the strings???please dont answer that the sound change because i've been learning the bass for a year and i 've never changed thm so I wont realise that the sound has changed..

    Thank you for your time

  • If you are happy with the feel, the sound, and the intonation, then don't change strings.

    George

  • Second...when I ask someone anything about the bass they tell me "Dont ask me you knew it was silly to take up the bass without laerning how to play the guitar first!!!" but I cant learn the guitar first because 1. I dont like it that much and 2.I just want to learn how to play the bass guitar and nothing else...

Thirdly I have a teacher but hes not a bassist i live in a small town I've been searching for long to find one but there's noone who gives bass lessons.I need some advice ...

  • Learning guitar may be helpful, but certainly not essential for bass playing. The techniques and roles of each instrument are different.

If your teacher teaches specific bass technique, then that is good. If not, you may have to re-learn later on - and who wants to start again!

Take a look at my course (via the link in the description box above).

    Kind regards,

    George

  • Hello, I have a couple of questions....Well you might answered them in the video but I m not really good at english so don't be curious why I ask that if you have already covered it.Anyway firstly is it wrong to rest/put my thumb on for example the A string while Im playing on the G or on the D?Because I am used to do this but my brother ( he doesnt play the bass just an another instrument) told me that it is totally wrong, but if I dont do this I play really, really slow.

    thanks

  • Yes, your question is answered in this video. Placing the thumb on the A string has many advantages, so stick with what you are doing.

    George

  • Question, a couple of friends i know told me that there is another style for the striking hand that uses the thumb mostly.(Brian Wilson form the Beach Boys is an example)

is that a good way to start, or should i use the style you mentioned?

  • Of course there are many ways to play the bass (and I apply most of them). This video covers one of the most standard and useful techniques - a good place to start.

    George

  • Great! But only one thing, some people use their back fingers to mute the strings, just out of habit. Neither way is wrong.

  • Yes, you are correct. In my early days of bass playing I also used my back fingers to mute. I have changed/modified my technique several times throughout my career.

Thanks for your observant and thoughtful post.

    George

  • hi! i love your lessons, and i have a question

alot of people say that it's "wrong" to use a pick for bass. what do you think? i've been playing guitar for about 2 years, and i recently started playing bass aswell, so it feels more comfortable using a pick. also, pretty much all of my favourite bass players use pick.

    thanks :D

  • You have just about answered your question yourself. How can it be "wrong" if there are thousands of great recorded examples where the use of a pick is perfect for the sound of the song.

That is what is important: Getting the most appropriate sound for a particular musical situation.

What this means of course, is that you could be a "one-sound bass player" if you limit your technique. That, however, can also be a positive "identifier".

    Kind regards,

    George

  • Thanks for discussing technique basics. I'm a pianist by trade, but just received my first bass as a gift, and I have ZERO chops on it. I understand the fretboard, scales, theory, etc., but wthout basic technique, it just sounds like mud. That muting skill is just what I needed at this time. Thanks for that!

  • Hello and thanks for your insightful post.

    George

  • Thanks for the lessons! It's rare that someone will go back all the way to the beginning - thanks for that :)

  • ... and I thank you too!

I find it important to get comfortable with the rudiments.

    George

  • Can you play if you left but you have an right handed guitar? if not can you learn that?

  • Yes, you can. It is best to experiment with a few options before committing to any of them, i.e. do what feels right and easy.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline hi george ur online lessons are ausum can u send me the lessons

  • Hello and thanks for your kind comment and request.

You can get to my website (where you can subscribe to a complete step-by-step course of bass lessons) via the link in the Description box above (click on "Show more").

    George

  • @cehalalvares hello sir i had sent you an email yestrday did you get it?????

  • @cehalalvares hello sir i had sent u an email to info@creativebass did u recieve it???????

  • @cehalalvares can i play bass in left hand

  • @cehalalvares Yes, they do sell Left-handed bass guitars.

So, just look for a store that sells Left handed bass guitars.

  • Hello Cehal

I have replied to your queries via email.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline can i play bass in left hand?????

  • Just asking I think I already no the answer but can u use a very thick pick to play the bass or do u have to always use ur fingers?

  • You can use anything that works and creates a sound you like. There are dozens of possible playing techniques.

One of my You Tube lessons is about playing with a pick.

    George

  • @BassLessonsOnline Thx cos I have a band our bass player left and I think I might have to record bass over our songs. By the way I will use your lessons to learn bass. :)

  • I like the way you teach, it's very easy to understand. Thanks :)

  • That's excellent - thanks for your input.

    George

  • Handy vid. it's helped me play with my fingers than a pic. Can resting your thumb on a pic up after a wile ruin it cos of sweet on your thumb ? If u can answer that for me I would appreciate it. :)

  • Excellent! - thanks for comment and question.

Yes, if you sweat profusely and it gets into the wiring of the pup, your sweat could cause damage. No worries if it is just on the plastic pup cover.

    Bass regards,

    George

  • Thanks George. I'm planning on starting to teach bass to pay for equipment. Any tips on teaching one on one?

  • Yes, begin the session with review, then add something new, then end with the student using the new technique or concept. Also, don't over-inform or over-load.

    Bass of Luck!

    George

  • thank you!

  • Cool - thanks too!

    George

  • thanks George

  • When playing faster across a few strings, it is essential to skip strings, i.e. keep the thumb in place ... so your recommendation is good :)

    George

  • Hello, George.

I am an absolute begginer bass player who fell in love with this instrument at hearing the final bass-touch from Pink Floyd's "Learning to Fly".

A friend of mine began teaching me this basic exercises, and today I just bought a Yamaha RBX170 (in mettalic red), and I have a question. What can you say to me to kill this part of me that wants to learn NOW and play NOW? I want to play, but I want to learn to do it well.

PD: Sorry for my bad English. Thanks from Spain :D

  • You should learn and play now. Make sure you exactly as you say: "learn to do it well". Learn bass parts that are musically rewarding as well as having the right amount of manageable challenges.

    George

  • I'm not quite understanding how the thumb is being placed... is it on the actual string your trying to play... and you strum around it...?

  • Hello and thanks for your query.

The thumb is placed on the neighboring lower-pitched (thicker) string.

    George

  • Is It:

    A-String

    E-String

    D-String

    G-String?

  • No, from thick to thin, it is E A D G.

    George

  • just found your lessons, love them!

  • which model bass is that?

  • I get asked this quite often. It is an American Fender Hot-Rodded Precision Bass.

    George

  • Suggestion: wouldn't recomend dropping your thumb to new strings because it is easier to play fast things if your thumb stays on a pickup, but your videos are awesome so keep up the great work :)

  • Hey George

I was checking out your site with interest in your beginner program. I was wondering what your e
