Every year our group holds an Imbolc ritual centered around a chalice of milk shared by each of us as a sign of being nurtured by the divine mother. It's actually the best ritual of the year in our group.
I prefer our local old pagan ritual of Imbolc, theres about 100x more ebergy and light and dancing and music and lots of fire and fireworks. All that and a real community vibe. That passion, energy and togetherness is what Imbolc is about for me.
black is a colour traditionaly worn by pagan practioners because back in the day and even now , people were persercuted for their beliefs .. black made it easy for people to disappear into woods or surroudings in northern europe in day or night if their rites were interrupted by people who might be less than friendly. There might be other reasons but that one seems to make the most sense. its also part of the reasons why wiccans and goths are associated with each other now .. :(
Black is symbolic for renewal, rebirth, and life. Because from darkness, from death, there can only be light, life. That is why black is such a sacred colour... the black robes may have helped them escape, but black robes were common even before Paganism was a 'sin'. and goths just wear black to cloak their insecurities. And bad taste.

Exactly my point, it's all about ego fulfillment. The Book of Shadows says a Wiccan is never even to admit they believe in witchcraft, let alone showing secret rituals on You Tube where any cowan can see them! "Look at me! Look at me! I'm a witch (TM)! Next Hallowe'en I'm gonna be a pirate!"
The BoS also says the rituals are to take place skyclad, but since people just make it up as they go along, I guess it doesn't realy matter.
Firstly, there is no officially recognized 'book of shadows' for all Wiccans. Generally a coven-shared BoS can exist, but every individual coven's BoS is going to vary in what it says, if they even use one. This is partly the reason I love Paganism as a whole: there is no universally enforced doctrine.
Another principle of Wicca is Harm None, which, to me, includes not dictating to others how to live or practice their personal religious path.
Religion is personal. Koko is right. To each their own and let be. Unlike the olden days, I don't believe it wrong to honest about ones religion if someone asks,-why wear a symbol of it outright then?-but no one likes to hear religious yap yap unless they are into such stuff. It more a case of watch what u say and to whom.if someone wants to know more than the basic system, i tell them to research it theselves. Many do and enjoy it.
killerkitty, that "watch what you say and to whom" sounds like dangerous territory - stopping people using their free speech because of you belonging to a particular religion. As long as someone genuinely wants to know the answer and isn't deliberately being offensive and isn't causing harm, they should be allowed to ask anything they want
Dictating to others isn't harmful though (unless it's enforced), it's just irritating or annoying - and if someone thinks something you're doing is violating a commandment of your religion (such as 'harm none'), then it makes sense to point it out
It was a nice ceremony, but I prefer a brighter Imbolc ceremony, too. I always thought that Mabon and Samhain were the darker, more somber sabbats. Imbolc is about getting rid of the darkness of winter and welcoming spring and the Goddess in her maiden form.
I agree, in that imbolc should have bright colors present. The light and warmth that is to come should be encouraged with harbingers of that quality. I understand the metaphor of the blackness, but this is about the advent of spring and the sun's continuing path to ascendency.
Leave it to the neo-pagans to ruin "Imbolc". It used to be a vibrant agrarian celebration of the coming of spring. What's with the creepy black robes??
As Imbolg is the awareness of the end of darkness and the coming of the light, so too does black represent that darkness, whereas the purple of the tabards indicates a growing awareness of the light and life. Black is the absorption, or destruction, of negativity, and as such is most appropriate for this time of the elimination of the death of the winter months, and the welcoming of the light of the growing season.
merry meet all, not being able to come to temple because of distance i really feel the need to tell you that these video's of rituals are wonderful. not only do i get to enjoy just watching them, but am also able to feel being part of ritual as though i were there.
i am a dharmic wicca.
i love the dharmic parts in the worlds religions and the ladies are an important creature in my religion hence the wicca at the end of dharma.
dharma is older than the worlds closest religions------the chinese : )
i am an european so don't try to hate my dharmic wiccan people!
my people will make the world obey us one day and for eternity.

So much for secrecy. The Wiccan motto nowadays should be, "OOOOH! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME!"

The sun GIVES light energy to banish the dark.
Darks are cool,devoid of energy.
Purple is a rich, calming colour.
I felt sucked dry when I watched the ritual.
I wanted to feel heat, energy, electricity WARMTH...life. LIFE coming back around full circle...i couldn't FEEL it. It was somber...
