Avatar and Ferngully both share an ancient story of man's ambition coming in conflict with nature. None of these archetypal stories are original, it's in the telling that the art and originality come out. :) Just my thoughts
I disagree..... I wouldn't have any problem if there was at least one original concept in Avatar....... well...... I don't know why, but I still enjoyed the movie, probably because of the visuals. But I think I won't see Avatar again because of the lack of creativity.
I can see James Cameron sitting in his living room drinking a few beers watching Ferngully with enviornmentalists laughing going "Whoa! I can so make this better! With CGI!!! and in the FUTURE!"
@JasonsWorld86 I hate James Cameron so much! Fern Gully represents great movies from the past and the bull dozers represent James Cameron plowing them down!
ha ha ha ha I thought this when I saw Avatar! I love both movies, don't get me wrong, just not an original story. Fantastic job with the sound splicing. Loved it!
Thank you!!! When Avatar comes out on DVD I want to see people do a split screen comparison of some of the scenes Avatar ripped from Ferngully... that would be GREAT!!!
Avatar, Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas, FernGully are all retellings of old stories. They only copy from each other insomuch as they are all copies from an older source (eg "white man" / european is the only solution to "X" peoples problems). Interestingly, ancient South American cultures thousands of years before europeans came to "the new world" had myths of white men coming and bringing great changes. Go figure, this story is literally thousands of years old.
The basic route story of Avatar isn't a copy of Pocahontas or Dances With Wolves or Fern Gully or anything. It's a retelling of a story as old as time, redemption and rebirth. It didn't copy any movies, it simply retold a story we all know.
@ColuMoth13 the kicker is that it is not just "based on" it is the same story! you should watch the movie "cyberpunk educator" because it uses structualist literary theory in the movie to walk you through the "story" of all stories.
I just noticed that part in ferngully hen they are running on the water and it's lighting up on each spot they touch - parts in avatar where when they step the ground changes color under their feet.
And it's directed by BILL KROYER - it says so on the back of the video. NOT James Cameron. You can't use that arguement
OH.......SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My teacher was right, James Cameron's motto is, "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance then baffle them with bullshit" THE FRAMES, THEY ALL CONNECT, SO POCAHONTAS...
OMG ! its true: all the ideas was in fern gully -the forest and spirit to protect -the machines who are going to destroy it -the huge tree -the villager who living in the big tree -the insensible guy who'is changing his feeling -the girl, daugther of the chef -the popular guy that hate the new guy -the flying scene -the illumatated magic spirit phosphorence -the communication with the nature -the ''witch'' who speak with the nature spirit -the fire attack -etc
Why did you use the Island Soundtrack?

Maybe, but it did so badly.

@TheMaineLobstah EXACTLY. Stories and movies are based after OTHER stories and keeps on going that way, its not meaning its unoriginal

@nicoluru and also in warcraft:
- huge world tree (in avatar: home tree)
- huge bluish nature-lover creatures with strange ears
- illuminating mushrooms, etc.
- colorful flying creatures
- and also the flying stones and strange stone vaults can be found in "outland":)
- etc, etc etc
