  • Hate to burst the bubble of whoever posted this, but God Bless America was NOT written by Irving Berlin for Kate Smith. He wrote it during world war 1 and he HATED IT. Put it in a file (after publishing it, of course) and forgot about it. 20 years went by and Kate Smith came to Berlin and asked him if he could write her a patriotic song that she could sing on a radio program. Berlin tried but couldn't think of anything, so he suddenly remembered he had GBA. The rest is history. That's the truth.

  • HOW MANY PEOPLE THINKS KATE SMITH IS THE BEST SINGER FOR THIS SONG IN HISTORY?

THANKYOU KATE SMITH GOD BLESS YOU! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND HER ALLIES! MY HOME SWEET HOME.

  • Very nicely done!

  • Great lady singing about a great, vast, beautiful country, blessed beyond our founders' wildest dreams. We shall survive this sorry President just as we survived other disasters --- with the help of Almighty God.

    God Bless America!

  • @YouKnowImRight39 ..I know America has a lot of problems and for that I am very sad. I am aware of many of the things that you mentioned but I have to think of the positive or I would be very sad at the state that America is in. I would rather live in this country then any other. I do have many fond memories of days gone by. I am 68 years old and I have seen a lot. Kate Smith sang this song back when America needed it and America still needs the blessings of God.

  • Thank you Kate Smith God bless you and GOD BLESS USA& HER ALLIES!

  • tears to my eyes..... and im 21 years old.

  • THANK YOU! Today this makes me cry for more reasons than one. God Bless America!! Great effort, @ksgrandma ! Beautiful.

  • God bless america.

    Greeting from Hellas

    This song is amazing

  • Kate Smith was my favorite singer in the late 1930's as a young boy and during WWII on "The Kate Smith Hour" weekly on the radio. And God Bless America was fantastic as she literally belted it out of the park. A small correction: "God Bless America" is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin in 1918 and revised by him in 1938, as sung by Kate Smith (becoming her signature song)."God Bless America" takes the form of a prayer ("as we raise our voices, in a solemn prayer).

  • I agree...no one sings it with feeling like Kate Smith.

  • too bad she could not sing at super bowl XLV I bet she would have gotten the words right

  • GOD BLESS AMERICA STAND BESIDE HER AND GUIDE THROUGH THE NIGHT WITH THE LIGHT FROM ABOVE.

  • This is the America I remember.....What the hell happened to us???? I do not expect an answer because I truly beleive no one knows.

  • What a combination.........Kate Smith and Irving Berlin! She could sing anything and he could write anything. Our nation has been blessed to have had them both. Thanks for the remembrance with this video.

  • The greatest song ever sung by the one and only Kate Smith..... God Bless us all at this time in history.

  • @Dunitlucky Her voice has a 'volume' that no one else since can put forth.

  • Berlin originally wrote the song in 1918 while serving in the U.S. Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York, but decided that it did not fit in a revue called Yip Yip Yaphank, so he set it aside. The lyrics at that time included the line, "Make her victorious on land and foam, God bless America..."[1] as well as "Stand beside her and guide her, to the right with the light from above."

  • Nobody sings like Kate Smith! I loved her as a child, and I still do. It makes me teary eyed to hear her again because it reminds me of my childhood. Every 4th of July celebration should play Kate Smith's version of God Bless America. From the Mountains, To the Prairies To the Oceans white with Foam, May God Bless America again!

  • He originaly wrote it in 1918 and revised it in 1938.

  • Yes, I believe this song was written in 1917 for a musical entitles 'Yip, Yip Yiphank' - but Berlin realised he had a real hit on his hands and withdrew it before it appeared in the musical and kept it for a special occasion - and Kate Smith provided that occasion.

  • Need Kate for game 6 in Philly!!

  • I'm trying to download this video of Kate Smith for the nursing home for July4th. It is the only Kate Smith that seems to have good video. How can I find it, it does not seem to be on your website?

  • To whom ever gave this a negative. You are proof that some abortions live.

  • Nancy and Harry should learn that it is God who is blessing America and not the left wing socialist in Washington.

  • God has truly blessed America, just look at those pictures. Of course we do have our problems - Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. But then we don't have too much sand.

  • Irving Berlin wrote this song in 1917 and never released it. Kate Smith asked Berlin for a patriotic song about 1938. Berlin said she could have this song but Kate refused to accept the song for free. They agreed to release the song and any proceeds would be given to the Boy Scouts of America. The song was an instant hit as were other songs that supported the 16 million Americans that went to war. I believe this was the most popular song during those dark years.

  • my music teacher taught me this song she made us like listen to it a million times!

  • No one sings it like Kate.

  • God bless America and Mr. Irving Berlin for giving us such an inspiring patriotic song.

  • God Bless America!!! Land of Freedom of good people and beautiful I love USA despite never having gone to see in person! parabéns pelo video! Carlos, Brazil.

  • I love it too but we sure have our problems here. May God continue to bless America.

  • america e um continente seu otario

    baba ovo...

  • @waitbrazil Hopefully someday you will visit our wonderful America. We will do our best to make you feel welcome!

  • @waitbrazil Babão

  • Can't believe that Kate Smith didn't sing the opening verse to this song, as she had many times on the radio. James Melton sings it in his version, here on You Tube. That is a beautiful part of the song that shouldn't be omitted.

  • Helenews ...The opening verse is soooooo beautiful... I wish more would include that part !

  • thank you and yes, G d bless America, our home sweet home. thank you Lord

  • Gorgeous pictures & A GREAT VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!
