I like how an incorrect comment about the TRX450R not having a rocker arm ends up as a top comment. It shows how piss ignorant the average youtube user is. It would probably have taken all of 45 seconds to google it and learn it has a rocker arm for the exhaust valves.
My 06 sounds similar after the installation of the HRC kit. Before that my motor sounded like there was loose parts internally and was hard starting and idle extremely rough. I did have a problem with the decompression lever(internal) sticking and clicking-loud. Even with the noise and everyone I know telling me it didn't sound right-including the guy that sold it to me when I brought it in for the first service-I've had only a good experience with the machine.
@BagBrothers yeah, the valve train on these motors are "abnormally" loud. But, reguardless of what some of these jokers on youtube say, this video showcases a bad motor. Trust me, after putting the new piston/rings in, putting the valve spring keeper back in place and the shift fork back where it belongs it sounds nothing like this video. I should probably take another video and post it for the critics. I have had no problems since replacing my piston/rings etc.
That is how a TRX450R/ER sounds, i've got a 07 460erwith the same noise, a buddy with a 06 450r same noise. we've been ridding them hard for years and never had a mechanical issue. that's my 2 cents
@TheJaggerBombers Thanks for the comment. Yes, I'm sure your motors make some noise. Maybe it might sound similar to this, but believe me if your motor sounded like this did in person you would NOT be riding long. The only way I can describe it is if there was a midget in my motor and they where just bangin' away with a ballpeen hammer!
@mattschmit1 fortunately That is NOT how a TRX is supposed to sound. I mean, by all means if that's how your motor sounds and you're happy with it, good for you - But Once the motor was torn apart it was clear that is not how it is/was supposed to sound. yes these motors are noisy but nothing like this. If you would like, I can take a video of the quad motor now to show how it should sound.
@Knuckles1437 Well... My YFZ sounds like that. The twin cams are just noisy like that in all of those motors. It could be a GOOD thing that your motor makes that noise. It could just be quite, but then you would need a new cam from the over tensioned rocker arms.. lol
I had the same noise with my 06 trx450er my buddy took it apart for me nd couldn't find anything wrong with it. When he put it back together it stoped making that knocking sound.
your motor is fine buddy, mine 07 450r has the same knocking noise at idle before and after i had a HRC fitted to it and its still going hard after 4 years of hard riding. Its just a Honda 450r stock noise
I bought my 06 450r last year from my boss and it had some pretty nasty noise coming out of the motor. Took it to a shop, and come to find out that it was the cam chain flopping around in there even with the tensioner tight. After replacing all that crap, I had a little noise left over before rebuilding the top end.
And the trx frame weight limit is 241 lbs, which has nothing to do with motor strain. Its about frame integrity. If youre 300+, you shouldnt be on a 400 or 450.
my 2007 trx400ex done the same thing and i was told it was spos to make that sound it talks about it in the book not to let someone thats over 300 lbs ride that quad because there to fat and its to much strain on the quad i hope i dont have any probs wit my next quad im getting its the 2008 trx450er hope it works fine and the starter dont act up
ok my trx450-r has that same low knocking noise but since i got a stage two hotcam installed it also has like a light tapping noise like if you got a screwdriver and started tapping on metal so i took it to the mechanic and he said that its the rocker arms since the clearance on the aftermarket hotcams have bigger gaps then when it is stock idk if he was full of BS or what lol but like i said its a very small tapping noise but i didnt hear it before the hotcam install so any advice plzzzzz
@aman450r these motors are noisy! If you can, take a video as I did with the motor just at idle, and then burp on the throttle a little. When I first purchased mine back in 09, I had to bring it back to make sure the noise was OK. I have a few friends with this same quad, some modded, some stock and they are all about the same noise level
@aman450r the 450r doesnt have rocker arms. the cam is above the valves and the lobes contact cam buckets and the cam directly. so i'd guess your buddy was full of bs
@wolfewispr actually a trx450r motor has one rocker arm. The single over-head cam has three lobes, two push down on the intake valves directly, One lobe pushes on a Y shaped rocker arm that opens the exhaust valves.
@kevinmaynard2004 Left side is crankcase and right side is tranny. Supposebly you can run engine oil in both, but I have always run the Honda HP Tranny (Red bottle) in the tranny and havent ever had any problems

That's really how they sound. It's how the unicam is telling you it's happy. Every Honda does this.

the motor knocks becuase your not running a high enough octane gas causing premature detantion of the fuel

That noise is not normal. If ANY motor sound like that it needs serious attention people.

It's valves or timing or cams
devonyz85 8 months ago
lol, if you checked the valves you would be clueless then. The valves werent the problem. Wrist pin ceased up, along with a lot more.

valves need to be adjusted and re shimed bud,I see this all the time lol.

Try using a 96 octane or higher happened to my honda while back if it dont stop your valves could be loose or need to be adjusted
2trx400ex2 1 year ago
Check your tire pressure. Pressure should be anywhere from 2-4 pounds. You're welcome.
BubbyandKierra 1 year ago
is sounds like valve clapping or your not running high enough octane
yz125ridr 1 year ago
not good not good at all that suck also not cheap
hellboy6693 1 year ago
yeah it sounds like valves need adjusted
lilreichard117 1 year ago
valves where too tight, getting the refaced, new seats put in (softer than stock- should last longer) no major damage done to the valves or piston.
this was all from a shift fork coming out of place in the tranny and me not being able to shift.
Knuckles1437 2 years ago
Why do the 450r s have two oil caps (one on each side) thanx.
kevinmaynard2004 2 years ago
they use to different oils one for the tranny and one for the rest of the motor...I think honda was one of the only ones to do this
mathhers 1 year ago
it uses to types of oil

@kevinmaynard2004 they have split cases
