  • Does anyone know who played the opening electrical guitar in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?

  • @JackKlompus13

George plays rhythm and Paul played lead guitar and bass.

  • @JackKlompus13 It was The Beatles

  • @gunnerglory

    Thanks! :D

  • check out what Paul says about bass and recording bro, at 4'50"

  • there is a recording of the tracks released seperately so you can mix them yourself with a four track

  • I really wish this would be released in some way that we, the listener, can enjoy each track, and do what George Martin is doing here, pushing the volumes of the 4 tracks to get a different mix... What a great album.

  • when pauls in the studio with george martin talking about 'Lucy' it looked like he was gonna start crying. i think thats why he started messing about

  • 5:26 Priceless.

  • Paul McCartney still looks like a kid next to George Martin.

  • In his autobiography, George Martin said he named his daughter, born in 1967, "Lucy" after the song.

  • love seeing Paul and George Martin over the soundboard, talking about the recording process...i wish these guys would live to be 200

  • Chicken butt

  • I wish I could be in a band with Paul...

  • So in order to make the greatest album of all time, all you need is some pot, LSD and wine?

  • @goatcheez81

    and the best talent imaginable

  • 1:20 Wow, they have great harmony. It would have been awesome if they had made an acapella album.

  • XD @ 5:34-5:37 XD

I'm sure John Lennon's goin' for it! XD

  • @ 6:20 I TRULY UNDERSTAND WHAT GEORGE IS TALKING ABOUT!!!

THE BEATES TILL THIS DAY ARE MORE POPULAR THAN JESUS!!!

    :D

  • So much epicness in a single record

  • marty in the sky with diamonds. hazel in the sky with diamonds....

right. that's all there was to it.

  • el mejorrrrrrrrrr albuem de la historia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Kid's drawing" yeaaaaaa whatever paul john sang it n he certainly was under the "influence" quite a number of times LSD no debate

  • @preppyboinj his Son DID do a drawing like that,

  • cool doc,thanxs

  • Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is LITSWD, not LSD. Get it right people.

  • @DAYD111 True, but if you follow the nouns..

  • @DAYD111 ajjajajajajajjaja

  • @DAYD111 But they do it "LUCY in the SKY with DIAMONDS" =LSD, but its not true that he MEANT It to be like that

  • @Standrew777 John was open about his drug use. If it had been about LSD he would have said so (like he did with Tomorrow Never Knows.)

  • @DAYD111 they made it look like "LUCY in the SKY with DIMONDS"=LSD. but im sure its just a made up thing

  • @DAYD111 Actually in most titles only proper words are capitalized thus it is Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. But, it was definitely not LSD on purpose.

  • @DAYD111

LITSWD is a drug I would most definitely like to take...

  • @DAYD111 But then ist USOA and not USA...

  • @DAYD111 the song is a drug, not about drugs

  • tokyoisfun: I love this phrase too. I donot play keyboard or piano, but the only thing i can play is this wonderful intro.

  • Not much footage exists of McCartney and George Martin together

  • what about ringo's drumming on Sgt. Pepper, Mister Martin?

  • 1:23 --

    the chorus is GREAT!!

  • i love the sgt.peppers

  • 5:23-5:28 When Paul singed with John and smiled afterwards, you feel he misses the guy. Just beautiful.

  • I just love how George Martin says, "It is the most wonderful phrase, if Beethoven had been around he wouldn't have minded one of those" while playing the intro to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Real talent.

  • @daleastar Lennon was a drug addict

  • Kinda a sad thought that only John's voice is there with them.

  • John took an aspirin? yeah right

  • How great is it to see Paul's face when listening to John sing!?! We think of John as this songwriter, singer, legend, etc... To Paul, it was his boyhood friend. It's very sweet.

  • I would love to have the kind of stuff at my disposal that Sir George does. I would have so much fun playing with equipment for weeks.

  • thanks so much

  • Amazing!!!!

    xoxo

    The Clarences

  • @daleastar

i don´t get your point exactely (my english is not so good at native phrase talk),

but i did not mean that beatles or ringo were typical drug addicts or hardcore - drug abusers,

though lennon had a little heroin sniffing issue all through the seventies until his death

(if one believes reports, which sound quite realistic and credible)

  • @MoveOverCasanova Heroin sniffing?

  • what the hell happened to paul at 5:33 ?!?!?

  • I love hearing just the vocals at about 1:22.

  • @iowdave Your wrong. Go ahead search the picture on google you'll find it.

  • Hi mate, yes i have seen the pic years ago, it doesn't prove anything. Listen to the lyric. Unless you have never done LSD then i doubt you get it but trust me. It describes the LSD experience to a tee. Another coincidence? Believe what you like dude!!

  • @iowdave It proves everything. Obviously during the Sgt Pepper era the beatles music was strongly influenced by drugs including LSD and weed, but the song wasn't about LSD at all. All of the beatles as well as george martin have sayed that it was about the picture. The beatles have admitted that other songs where about drugs such as dr robert, why would they lie about this one song??

  • @iowdave the exactly stupid, they've spoken about 'Day Tripper', 'Dr Robert' and others being about drugs John never lied, if he says (and everone else involved with the band) say it's about a picture then it clearly is - the lyrics don't sound trippy and insane so it's not really psychedelic lyrically.

  • @skint0n0minted ...... You say that the lyrics dont sound trippy or insane??? Are we talking about the same track?? Newspaper taxis? Kalidascope eyes, flowers that grow so incredibly high, tangerine trees, celaphene flowers of yellow and green that grow over your head???

With respect mate, you need to do some acid. Though do do it because i told you too ;-)

  • mccartney says: the drug scene at the time of 67 was so

innocent -- sure, and syd barret , morrison, hendrix etc. were just the exception of the rule?

  • Brilliant! This is awesome :)

  • George Martin was more important than Ringo! Absolute production genius.

  • it so funny when Ringo say ''shitty music at 7:08.

  • i dont get what paul is saying at 7:25 about ray charles. why couldnt he pay them anything?

  • what Paul is refering too, is that the person thought ray charles was cheap, because his band members had to share a cigarette...when actually, they were in the bathroom stall sharing a joint.....ahhhhhhhh, the good ole days...lol

  • no, the dude thought they weren't getting paid cuz they had to share a cigarette, but really they were sharing teh cigarette cuz it was full of MARIJUANA

  • in interviews and stuff Paul always seems self absorbed, and with a giant ego, always wanting to talk about himself. With all the attention he gets I'm not surprised

  • George Martin once said he wasn't bothered that the Beatles smoked pot - he himself enjoyed a dry martini or two - he just didn't want them being stoned for sessions. In his book, he told the story of when as a producer in the 1950's he showed up for a session after knocking down a few drinks and the artist walking out of the session. A lesson he never forgot.

  • the guitar response in 0:37 (the high one) always capture my atention

  • When I listen to the three part vocal harmonies in Sgt Pepper, I can hear Paul leading the song, John on the high notes, and an undercurrent of George on the bass or deepest vocal, which is odd seeing as he had the highest low pitch voice, meaning that his bass was higher than the others. What do you think?

  • it's not a very low note what he sings there (George) in -nowhere man- he sings lower notes perfectly; in both cases Beatles voices sounds amazing... I think John and Paul must be on higher notes because of the punch they had... and george sings more calm, so it's ok that he is on the bass... anyway sounds terrific!! there were no auto-tune in those days, and they are never out of tune making voices...

  • Love the way George Martin strips back the songs. Awesome.

  • Love to hear those 3-part harmonies without the backing rhythm tracks. Gives me chills.

  • it was written about a drawing his son had drawn. but he was tripping when he wrote it. but there is no denying his greatness in music and songwriting. the song is such a great song and is so vivid in description.

  • LOL 5:35

    GO FOR IT!!!

  • hot girls dancing around.

  • What a wonderful, delightful album!

  • ive seen this tons of times,

    it never gets old

  • i hope that every single dumbass who says Lucy in the sky with diamonds was about LSD is watching this, just for they can STFU.

  • it can mean a number of things, but it could also mean lucifer, in the sky with diamonds(stars).

  • beautiful

  • Watch Paul have a fleeting yet noticeable moment of overwhelming emotion hearing John's voice after 4:40.

He recovers and blasts the faders. It must have been terribly difficult at times for him to hear this.

  • Haha, it looks like Paul's got a mullet!

  • How dare you insult herr sir?

  • of all the wonders of the Beatles, seldom discussed is the fact that Paul was and is an incredible bassist.

  • i could sit and listen to all of their albums with just the vocals. like when george turned everything else off at the begining of this video

  • all that on 4 faders. pure genius...

  • 'this...SUPER electric guitar...'

george martin is in my book of cool people.

  • WONDERFUL part to stop it at :D

when he made that funny face and it paused, i was HAH! it was one of those sudden outbursts of laughter.

  • if you want a mono performance record the cd on to mini disc and hey presto ive done it

  • That was a good one.

  • 'LSD was like going to the moon' haha

  • She's Leaving Home is much better in mono (as is the whole album) but mostly SLH because it is played at the correct speed in mono. For some reason it was slowed down for the stereo mixing. I prefer most all of the Beatles albums in mono as the mixes are much better.

  • I love to hear a MiniDisc reference, as above, but "turning it into mono" ain't the same. The thing to keep in mind is how they spent about 21 days mixing the mono-Pepper . . . followed by a couple of days for the stereo as an afterthought/requirement.

    so there !

  • "ahem" ! . . a MiniDisc reference, as Below !!

  • is this on dvd, if it is where can i get it?

  • george martin's a real gentleman, make's me nostalgic for a time long before i was born.

  • Who has the original mono version that received so much attention with the mixing. The stereo version is a bit lacking to listen to - stuff hard panned and over done. Geoff Emerick himself said the stereo version was rushed compared to the mono version as most people did not have stereo players then. It's less noticeable on speakers but I'd love to get hold of the mono version of the Pepper.

  • She's Leaving Home is better in Stereo, it's too cold in Mono. But the rest, Mono is pretty much better. Though Pepper Stereo is great on headphones to listen more clearly to all the little detials in there.

  • No, Stereo takes the sound-picture away from the producer. Imagine placing two speakers 10 meters away, or 5 meters away, or just 10 inches away on you'r head. In Mono you will always hear everything in comperasion to each other.

  • Maccas voice is fantastic. What a band. Listen to those harmonys.

  • This is worth listening to for the backing vocals on Sgt. Pepper alone - jesus they are so tight it's bloody spine chilling. Amazing stuff and a great documentary.

    Cheers Maccalennon

  • Thanks very much for putting this up.

  • It's surreal how Sir Martin isolates the tracks & draws attention to the lovely sonical subtleties... man....

  • no kidding i'm a sucker for hearing stuff like this, listening how things were put together and recorded

  • I cannot tell you the impact this album had on me! Unbelievable! I thought for a time all I ever needed this album and a 4 track tape player!
