Protesting can backfire. When the price of fuel started going through the roof around six years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor of my local newspaper and they went ahead and published it, which I thought was awesome.

What I said went along the lines of "you do have to purchase your fuel at the gas station, but you don't have to buy anything else."

The result was stations closing.

Oops. That's good for the oil companies, because people now have to burn more fuel in order to buy fuel.
