  • Mr Hitchens  does not regard a fallen human condition and he categorizes with a presuppostion that all religon is wrong based on the humans who take righteousness out of context. He has not read enough Scripture to develop a opinion that is divine enough to call God a liar. He is just a man. very sad

It's impossible to believe an omnipotent god wouldn't have better things to do with his time than that

Even trying to visualize such a being, I can only think of some infinitely warped and sadistic child who had incredible power without any of the responsibility that should come with it, and was prepared to do and did such utterly MONSTROUS things. Such a god is inconceivable to anyone who still has a mind in their heads that actually functions.

    ....that the sins of the father should carry on to the son, that we are all responsible for original sin. Those are all immoral principles. Then what he does is he comes out and says "hmmm I've created this situation where I've turned everybody into sinners" so he sacrifices himself to himself to act as a loophole for a rule that he made himself, instead of just forgiving. It's an absolutely absurd and obscene and immoral philosophy.

What's more, it's nonsense that no moral person could possibly stand behind or support, i.e. IF such a creature existed and had all those properties you apparently believe in, it ("he" is too generous) would be a monster of galactic proportions.   • I don't know for how many words I've heard Mr. Hitchens speak over the last 5 years, but I'd guess that 80% of them were well received. There was something he said that was most desappointing. When asked if he had it to do over would he still smoke and consume alcohol he said, "Yes." I don't believe that. I think it was an act of rebelion. It wasn't an answer based on logic, but one based on false pride in my opinion.

  • @timjdong You may want to reconsider your assessment of "Vanity Fair." It's more than just a fashion magazine in the same way that "Playboy" is more than a men's magazine. Among other things, both are known for their relatively high literary quality. Regardless, Hitchens is not just a writer for "Vanity Fair," but also for "Slate," "The Atlantic," and many other journals and magazines. In fact, he's not just a writer; he's also taught at a number of institutions, including The New School.

  • Sky daddy worship is simply delusional behaviour, practiced by folks who have been brainwashed by the 'herd' of fellow brainwashed culture around them. The prognosis for escaping this delusion is heavily based on the level of conviction in the delusion and the openness the person has in allowing info that contradicts the delusion(reality).   • I admire him, respect him, and really hope he's wrong (about there being a purpose, direction, and meaning to the universe.) Hitch is a brilliant thinker, and I love his ability to use logic to make an irrefutable argument. I especially love his talent for irking Fox News. Religion should not be used to justify governent actions, decisions, or beliefs. I'm a Catholic, but hearing that Hitch is a victim of God's wrath because of his throat cancer disgusts me.

    Faith is no doubt built into the process of finding god, because finding god requires belief without justification, i.e. faith. And if you use faith to "answer" ALL of your questions as you suggest, you're gonna be as ignorant afterward as you were when you started, for clearly the "answers" will have absolutely no justification either. Such "answers" will be utterly meaningless. The real challenge is to dumb yourself down to the point where you'll actually believe those answers.

  • What Hitchens never addresses is that countries that are predominantly Christian general speaking tend to be the countries with the most freedoms? at least from my perspective. There doesn't seem to be a lot of freedom in countries that are officially atheist. China N. Korea, Cuba, and the former Soviets weren't really known for freedoms or human rights. I also see a pattern with communism. Why aren't atheist flocking to these places? They could live in a Christian free society.

  • @syggelekokIe CONT...... Stalin was hated by his own people he sent millions of them to their death but I do see a pattern with Communism and atheism. I sent encyclopedia article about non Communist atheist societies also and they didn't deem to be bastions of freedom.

  • My father and grandparents grew up in the Soviet Union and I have a decent knowledge of Russian history and politics. I know many citizens hated Stalin. Fear was a major factor during his reign, but he also employed ridiculous propaganda, such as novels which painted himself and Lenin as infallible, god-like heroes of the revolution, which children were forced to read at school and many believed. In fact there is still a large group of Russians today who worship Stalin like a god due to this.

You don't seem to understand the difference between states that are officially atheist and that outlaw religion, and secular states that allow freedom of choice. Please read a dictionary or an encyclopedia. If you don't have access to one or don't know how to find one on line, let me know and I will try to help you.

  • @benthemiester I brought up the fact that America is OFFICIALLY SECULAR to address your question of why don't atheists flock to communist (or "official atheist") states. It is important to note that because America is secular it therefore has no official religious basis and thus with regards to this asking why don't non-believer Americans flock to North Korea is like asking why don't all Christian Americans flock to Vatican City? My question is just as valid with this logic.

Why don't Christians flock to an officially Christian nation, like Vatican City or Costa Rica? They could live in an "atheism free" society.

The US is not an officially atheist country and a prayer is recited every morning in Congress. Our currency has the words In God We trust. Let the person who's the master, (at a given subject) in this case CH do the talking." So, while I can see your observation, I (thought) it was self-explanatory. Also, the "Hitch does believe in god" IS just my opinion, but based on so many years of watching him, and my own personal feelings.

  • I have to say that Hitchen's gambit "name me a moral action..." really falls down under its own definition.

    The answer is obviously: say a prayer for someone. Hitchens wouldn't consider that moral but a religious person would, and we end up back to where we should be with morals - relativism, not absolutism.

    Both Hitchens and the staunched theist seem to be absolute about morals - but that isn't the truth.
