L really knows human emotions very well even though he actually seems rather awkward when you meet him later on. He bet on the fact that Kira would be incited with anger and kill Lind L Taylor and it worked. Light really doesn't do well under pressure as mentioned several times in the series. That's part of how you know he's childish like L says later on as well.

Actually I believe L was smarter, only that he decided to do something too risky in order to prove to everyone that which he already knew, that Light was Kira. He died cause he was too risky, but all along he knew the truth, Light just had power which gave him a real huge advantage.
