But think of the mutual benefit if the two associations on this island had banded together under whatever name. Incredible when he says that a prospective club would have to pay a quarter of a million pounds (!) for him and he'd probably go back to doing the things he was doing. His heart obviously wasn't in it anymore and that 'the training sessions were becoming like work' is especially telling. Until George came along, it was 'a job' for most people in his profession. George changed that. His memory will live on forever.

DaveMineral, the question was put to Best in an RTE interview circa 2001 whether he considered himself British, Nothern Irish, or simply Irish. He said he was the latter. Not many around the world distinquish between the North and South. If you don't believe me then pop over to our neighbours in London who don't split hairs; you're Irish and that's that. Sorry about that. Oh and if there's a debate to be had, it's if Best was the most naturally gifted player ever (and I think he was).

Yes, I agree with you, we in the south never produced the equal of Best. He was (and probably will always be) the greatest, after all. But think of the mutual benefit if the two associations on this island had banded together under whatever name. With the combined available quality, we would probably regularly have qualified for the World Cup etc and possibly won some silverware, instead of being forever condemned to honourable also-rans.
