You are correct in terms of thinking about the principles of psychoanalysis. In his presentation, Dr. Rubin meant psychoanalysis as an applied discipline of treating patients, and it was (in a sense) invented by Freud. Remember, Freud called it a "talking cure"..?

I'd like to think that psychoanalysis is not an invention, but a discovery of some principles that were bound to be discovered sooner or later.
