I feel charging money for plastic bags is a good approach to curb people's habits. There have been significant decreases in single bag use in Europe as a result. I doubt environmental groups have the power to come close to an all out ban at this point in time, so make the sensible compromise!

I mean, when the larger stores stop offering plastic and start offering alternatives, then some changes might make the pie chart of single-use plastic bag decrease usage.

Plastic bags are better than paper bags in terms of carbon usage... This is because transportation wise, you can hold a lot more plastic bags in each load. The downfall of plastic is when it gets tossed into the garbage bin and is sent to a landfill that keeps getting bigger and bigger, causing pollution and often leaking into aquifers and the ocean.

Secondly, if they are recycled, it gets turned it into lesser-quality products - downcycling. One bag does not turn into a new bag. Even if it could, the energy to do so would be enormous

Banning them is a mistake. Just cover the wonderful aspects of reusable and paper bags. If you live in the rural area like I do paper is the most useful product. Clean, biodegradable, good for kindling, slop, veggies, pretty much anything you want. However banning plastic, as much as I dislike it, is a gross violation of personal rights. Fried food is very bad for you, but banning it would trample your rights.
