  • My favourite live video ever. Watched this several times but it always blows me away. The poetry, passion, and music, its so powerful and possessing. Heartbreaking.

  • makes shit of me. reduces me to a blubbering pile.

i genuinely believe ys will be noted as one of the best albums of the 00's in years to come.

  • I heard pieces of Joanna Newsom in March 2009 and never, ever forgot it but it was so, so hard to search because I just remember a couple words and that voice! I was driving a moving truck through the mountains and pulling over to listen wasn't possible and I've regretted it for almost 3 years.

I'm so happy I found it finally!!!!

  • Thank you. This song was my introduction to this album....after neglecting it for years because it didn't sound like 'The Milk-Eyed Mender". After finally sitting down with the album again, I went on line and youtubed this song.. and immediately recognized your footage because I had already seen your video for 'Bridges & Balloons' a personal favorite.

    Again, thank you.

  • "I love you" is a disturbing phrase, but I would say it without knowing her, practically-speaking. I've seen enough to come to that conclusion--"I love you."

  • Simply awesome.

  • Every word she sings is dripping with emotion. If you look at her facial expression when she plays this, it makes you want to burst into tears and sigh with joy, it's so overwhelmingly beautiful and breathetaking! I wish I could explore the depths of her mind...see what she's thinking and feeling.

  • that voice. that songwriting. that everything <3

  • GIRL.......You are clearly a genius songwriter. These lyrics have such a life of their own as they dance and float out of your mouth........

  • my favorite song from her <3

  • @huminamel oh, go chug some hateorade. you're the one taking time out of your day to post that on here. (And yes, I'm aware I'm taking a precious 10 seconds out of my life to respond to this silly comment, but my life is obviously much more rewarding)

  • @pshimcoolstfu

oh wow man im so sorry, i didn't realise your life was so rewarding. that changes everything.

  • So wonderful.

  • On other videos by other artists that I find beautiful, but others don't, I would normally say that it's a matter of taste and some people might not like it. That's how it is with a lot of Joanna's videos. But even if you don't like this one..if you can't acknowledge that this is an extremely magnificent piece of music, whether you're into it or not, then you're mad!

  • Oh, desire! <3

  • she's look like a machine playin the harp while she sings... intense.. rreessspect.

  • Her music is so poetic. Its gorgeous.Being unique,is what makes an artist.

Those who don't enjoy this beauty, then don't watch it.Who can sing like her?Who can play harp such as she does?Who can play such complicated pieces of music like this, unless your a harpist?I admire her, she's been playing since she was a child. She has worked hard,to rise to be known.<3

  • @pandaeyes42 i hope you explode into flames

  • @TheIancross

One of the more original insults. Thanks.

  • @pandaeyes42 well aren't you just a bad person

  • I really want to say something deep and profound about this song and the woman behind it; about how it has opened my eyes and shown me what a wonderful place our Rock can really be. But because I'm horrible with words, I'll leave this instead:

Joanna is on the fast-path to nirvana, and humanity is about 38 steps behind. I doubt we can ever catch up.

  • I feel like I just listened to an entire book..told by a little girl who somehow turned into a beautiful woman...and she knows how to do each voice.

  • Oh Joanna, what has you trembling so?

  • She's christian? =D

  • I find that the songs that require a little effort to get your head wrapped around are the ones which reward you more in the long run. I love the struggle, like exploring a new and unfamiliar place finding beautiful things hidden away and then the moment when you find yourself navigating the music with ease swept up in the magic. Opening up to new experiences definately has it's own reward.

  • @Magicalfilm

This is the exact same philosophy I have about music. amen.

  • I don't even know what to do with myself when I listen to this song now.

Crying doesn't suffice; running around for half an hour doesn't even and so now, I'm simply just screaming.

  • @EmmysSecretVideos does not suffice?!

    ha ha.

  • @sammyenn yep, little pun in there too!

  • Love this

  • I don't understand how she can remember all these lyrics.

I mean, she has a ton of long-ass songs without a single instrumental passage.

  • @HamSandwich09 As a kid she took a poetry class that required her to remember and recite some ridiculously long soliloquies and monologues and such. That's why it's not really a problem for her.

  • @HamSandwich09 i think it would be an instrumental bit in this that would finish her off lol her or the harp, wish i could play like that

  • beautiful in everywhere. thnks !

  • I`m 25 and dont feel grown up at all .... beautiful none the less...

  • Gosh how doesn't the guy next to her just die?! I couldn't even handle this song live, it's too beautiful.

  • I sooo love this song. What amazing talent~playing, singing, and writing.

  • I man who lies under a tree; no home, hope or connect. A vile, manipulative creature whispering in his ear, and yet he allows himself to listen. Yet words begin to pour out which ring of faint familiarity, painting a portrait of a sprout and a bean. From this wicked source of harm was gifted the discovery of Joanna Newsom. A beautiful gift delivered by a horrid sin. It was all worth it, merely to discover Joanna.

  • I cannot get anyone I know into Joanna Newsom. Which kills me, because no artist gives me more shivers than this woman. It's sort of a fascinating disconnect, I'd love to study what the difference is between me and them, neurologically.

  • @Heligoland43

I know what you mean. I've given up on "those" people. It's just that you and others have a special ear for this beauty; maybe also that special gene. I have been watching this video for over 6 months now. This has to be the 40th time; the same shivers every time. I'm in my mid fifties so you can say I've been around and seen a lot. This is really something special. I have many posts here. My favorite is that I wish I could put her in my pocket like a shiny penny to show everyone

  • @TheTribeliker There's a lot of debate about the genetics. Do certain sound qualities have innate effects or are certain sorts of music assigned meaning by past experience? Considering that some music is an acquired taste I'd say it's the latter. But there's the argument for 'Openness', which IS genetic. Openness is neurological reward for abstract, aesthetic, and novel stimuli. So, some people stick to Top 40 their whole lives, because they experience more reward for familiarity, than novelty.

  • @Heligoland43

    I'll vote for past experience.

  • i just can't handle it sometimes. it's so beautiful it hurts.

  • i dont know how anyone could not like this.

  • How can anyone not love her? Surreal beauty.

  • honestly.. i am a 32 yr old black man from philly that.. has not been exposed to much other than r&b and hip hop.. although the lyrics are very very different... I can not deny the emotion it makes me feel when it comes to her unique voice and her breathtaking harp playing. To me this lady has perfect pitch and an emotion invoking voice. I have heard bridges and balloons.. and peach plum pear.. now this.. this is very different.. but i really really like it..

  • Whenever someone asks me to pick my favourite Joanna Newsom song i get really emotional because they all mean so much to me. My very own Sophie's Choice.

  • This is perfection. The best 9.37 in the world.

  • god does exist and that is joanna newsom

  • Why do you guys think growing up will EVER stop you from having a physical/emotional reaction to a gorgeous piece of music? :p

  • chills every 15 seconds.... Amazing, even still

  • The only thing I am still trying to figure out is where the scandinavian phonetics come from.....

  • I love joanna because she is so passionate about her music and it shows in her performances......yet to see her live but one day hopefully :)

  • I love joanna because she is so passionate about her music and it shows in her performances......yet to see her live buy one day hopefully :)

  • Ugh, I'm 29, a grown-assed woman, and I STILL cry because of this song.

  • @pamcash I'm 25, a grown man, and I'm not at all ashamed of my tears over such moving songs.

  • @Avalaros You are the perfect man :)

  • @Avalaros I'm 36 ... and agree

  • @Avalaros couldnt possibly agree more!

  • This is my favorite recording of this song... I can't stop listening to it! So beautiful and calling.

  • I think her squeak is cute.

  • Thank you for posting!!!!!!!!! Galaxies of gratitude!!

  • (Playing this) she's in a space few ever experience, yet we're taken along to its edge to feel some of it ourselves.

  • I have wondered if she has any control over the squeaking of her high notes, or if it's spontaneous.

  • genius is the only thing i can get to come out of my mouth right now

  • she is an angel

  • so pure

  • deep thick intense epic

    Desire

Do you wait for me there?

  • bjork loira tocando harpa

  • astounding

  • 4 people have had their long ears have been filled with bees.

  • the beauty of this song is crushing

  • Most enthraling performance I've heard.

  • I wonder if she knows how much she's loved...

  • she sounds and @ some times looks like smegal's beautiful couisin.. loveeee

  • her fingers are having sex with the strings and making love to my ears

  • Flawless, absolutely flawless. I am speechless. This woman writes the most unique music ever.. She is truly amazing

  • her voice squeaks make me so happy

  • @mypoorbrain97

it reminds me a bit of bjork's style of singing where they'll squeak or hit higher notes.

Its just beautiful though. I love it

  • This 25 year old dude has a runny nose and wet cheeks. I think something must have gotten in my eye as I was listening to this song.

  • Stupenda..

  • I hate to say it, but this song reminds me of the Titanic

  • What I wouldn't give to see her perform live

  • @Pikadono

What's keeping you from doing that? You really need to figure out a way to go. I've been to one of her concerts and now, after that amazing night, I really wouldn't be able NOT to see her if she came to my area. Even if you need to make a road trip out of it, it's worth it. She's incredible.

  • From 0:00 to 0:47 The best part of the entire song. The melody is simply breath taking

  • it's just beautiful music--no more no less-find depth in your own life

  • it's just beautiful music--no more no less

  • She was Whaling on that harp.

  • So much energy and emotion! She was dripping sweat when she finished!

  • Polyrhythms.... oh how you reach me

  • Just amazing

  • And the holiest belfry burns sky-high

  • Joanna is such a good artist, an is a beautiful with the harp. I really like this song except for one or two of those really high pitch notes that come out of nowhere lol

  • @WhiteHuskie66 Ahh, but that's what I don't like. There was this homey and "mine" feel with her earlier voice/low fame. I suppose it is just selfishness, but yes, her current voice is still great, hopefully her songwriting stays the same, though =) I love those deep allusions in Y's.

  • @XiveofMontreal well, too bad she suffered from vocal chord nodules

  • Newsom is neither first nor last to explore mortality in her art. And although gibbering the wave that takes it, the sand was moved, as was I.

  • If Middle Earth had a talent contest she would be the winner.

  • most beautiful ever

  • sounds nice......but i have no idea what shes talking about

  • This as got too be one of the best things ive ever seen thank you I know what i want for christmas

  • my god, this woman has talent! :D

  • 5:18 gave me cold chills... amazing

  • @Bumbletooth I had chills within the first minute.

  • I always feel a little better - physically - while watching this

  • @WhiteHuskie66 Too bad she had some vocal nodules that caused her to have to sing "regular" on Have One on Me and, most likely, for the rest of her musical career.

  • @XiveofMontreal *GASP* Tell me more!

  • she plays the shit out of a harp

  • Joanna Newsom is a national treasure who should be kept away from fulfilling sex like a nun monk, by Presidential fiat or iron chastity belt. Her last album sucked. If she sobs on stage for any recent song, I'd like to see it.

  • I can easily say that I prefer this song live. It has so much more emotion.

  • *spins til i get dizzy and falls to watch the room spin*

    yea... :)

  • sounds really cool. and her harp playing is just amazing. Although some of the vocal techniques she uses (like the high pitched breaking and stuff) is probably what lead to her vocal chord nodules a few years after this. there's a price to pay for sounding cool and unique

  • Non-Dual Master. Joanna Newsom. "Sing I will swallow your sadness, and eat your cold clay, just to lift your long face"

This is being sun from one to herself.

  • She really earns that emotional moment when she announces that the bell she dropped off the dock in the beginning of the song has returned and is tolling for her.

I just feel my whole body rock and rip when she yells that part out.

  • This is probably the only video that I can truly say I do not regret watching all 10 minutes of it.

  • You may notice a slight smell of burning as this song ends. This is the result of the clutchplate of your heart re-engaging with your soul. Half of this beauty would have sufficed, but I welcome the excess. Thank you Joanna.

  • She's like a modern day siren. It's so hypnotizing, I would follow that sound into the pits of hell haha

  • DESIRE

  • I am so impressed. all the songs i have heard so far by her are pure and beautiful. Honestly i love the raspy-ness in her voice and basically this is what the definition of beautiful is.

  • Joanna goes above and beond what most of us know a standard artist to be, to conjure up something truely magical and captivating. There arent many artist brave enoug to be that non-cookie cutter in this industry today. By doing that she gives her audience something beautiful that no other artist can, and to the poeple who are leaveing negative comments about her on the net, I have one theing to say............I don't care!!!! ;)

    peace

  • how can something this wonderful be real?

  • For a few minutes I was literally hyptonised by her fingers moving along the strings.

  • @XxiLLViLLAiNxX

There's definitely something witchy happening in this performance.

    6:53 - 6:57 --- I think she feels it too.

  • apparently she lives in my neighborhood and i can't wait to run into her at some coffee shop or something! hahaha >_<

  • @bowley4 You live in Nevada City? That's awesome, I do too. And this has happened to me twice. I ran into her in town and at the super market. It was awesome XD

  • does she have a teleprompter to help her remember all those lyrics? holy cow!

  • @MobiusBandwidth No. She went to a performing arts school in which one of her studies was the memorization of extremely long epics. She's a modern day bard in my opinion haha. It's awesome.

  • An incredible performance. Must hear it from beginning to end to appreciate. Is she crying? Yes the last 2 minutes are...what can you say.

  • Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this hugely. But what the hell is that at 1:50? (and a dozen other occasions) Seems she doesn't often say "and" without making a dolphin noise.

  • @Eturian It's the signature squeak that you'd often hear in her earlier stuff. You don't really hear it in her more later songs though, since she had vocal nodules and lost her voice due to bad singing habits. I do miss them though, those nasally dolphin-like squeaks...

  • this lady is amazing. she is really good at the harp. she has the voice of an angel, and she is really pretty. i want to meet this girl.

  • @MarcusCMarcellus Wow, I had the opposite impression. I thought the studio recording was kind of boring compared to this.

  • Comment removed

  • What?! This is so beautiful! Wowzers. I love her. That is what I meant.

  • WOW, I just love this girl's performances!!

  • She's so wonderful. It'd be a dream to meet her.

  • holy shit. the last two minutes are incredible.

  • THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THIS I THOUGHT HOLY SHIT! BJORK HAS RELEASED A NEW RECORD,BUT I WAS MISTAKEN.NOW I HAVE A NEW PATH TO FOLLOW AND ITS PURE AND BEAUTIFUL. MAKES YOU WARM AND HAPPY. GO HUG YOUR LOVE ONES BECAUSE ITS WHAT THIS MUSIC REPRESENTS LOVE...

  • this song made me cry today.

  • @mdodenhoff

it is pretty offensive to the ears...

  • @mdodenhoff

Not because its sad ... but its so deep and thick. And the effort she puts into it is epic.

Absolute beauty will always make me cry ;)

  • @mdodenhoff me too

  • every time i see one of JNs videos i am convinced she is possessed by some beautiful, brilliant spirit. look, i know its stupid, but thats just what i think. its a pretty cool world sometimes

  • @buikremasters No, she definitely. It's what i think all the time. of doves and sparrows and twisted strings, withered old souls but very much love.

  • eeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • appears to meee a sandcastle THAT THE JIiIiIiIiBERINNNNNG WAVES TAKESSSS

  • this song is like art...

  • wow, that's amazing! I know I am late to the JN party but I get it now, she's fantastic. I reckon you can forget the Bjork and Kate Bush comparisons, the singing on this track is like Van Morrison when he was really going for it, and the intensity of the song is like Bob Dylan at his best. I love it!

  • Why didn't she play this on her last tour? What a disappointment.

  • @stereocillia1988 Well, the last tour was to commemorate the Have One On Me album, which is three hours of material. To incorporate any of the Ys or Milk-Eyed Mender, or any other earlier works, would have made for the greatest display of Newsom ever. But unfortunately, such greatness is restricted by time. Simply put, the show would have lasted too long.

  • Hate Bjork, Love Kate Bush, not sure about Newsome yet - beautiful woman though.

  • @MissEgasMoniz I adore all three. Kate is chief among them, but Newsom is gaining :)

  • @shakesprssister They are all very talented - no doubting that.

  • she likes her add 9/sus 2 chords huh?

  • @colmcq Seriously. And she just goes crazy with the poly-rhythms haha

  • I'm sorry but you can't even began to compare Joanna to Bjork or dare to say she resembles her in anyway...they're both gifted and talented in their own separate unique ways. This coming from a Bjork & Joanna fan. People just need to listen to the music and stfu. Yes, I already know she's awesome. That's why I'm listening.

  • Amazing! Can't get enough of her music!

  • Bijork's talent doesn't even come close to rivaling Joanna Newsom's.

  • i wonder how she remembers all the lyrics....wonderful *__*

  • @MaryJoMcCormic She learned how to memorize and recite long poems in theater school

  • listen to Bijork much?

  • There is nothing I want more than to be able to play this amazing instrument. Joanna Newsom, you're basically my hero.

  • She's definately awesome and unique...with a touch of Bjork and Kate Bush to her style.

  • what an incredibly awesome piece and performance.

    wonderful!!!

  • the band can't even come close, why are they up there with her?

  • @openuplosers It's the Ys Street Band. O.O The whole album was built around Joanna Newsom and the Band working together. But yes, her harp playing and vocals are superb when compared to what this band is capable of. The band is to compliment her brilliance, not stifle it. And they've done so marvelously, in my opinion. :)

  • I listen to her music while I'm gardening. soothes the savage beast.

  • This song makes me cry. This was the first Joanna Newsom song I heard.

It sounds ridiculous, but Joanna Newsom defiantly got me through the circus that is High School in America. She has a way of articulating emotions that are so universal and complex. I have soooo many positive emotions and experiences connected to this song. I feel truly sorry for those who are so quick to scorn, you're missing out on something indescribable.

  • @sandhandsd hi. this is the first song of hers that i've heard--just last night.

i'm blown away. just beautiful! be well and happy sandhands. : D

  • @misserinchase - Yes Erin I like it. First time for me too. Thank you for sending this and hope you're doing good too!! <3 AC

  • she is amazing. love every piece of music she has released. great video and sound too
