The Royal Green Jackets were a regiment that traces back to the 95th rifles of Sharpe fame and were the first regiment in the british army not to wear red. As they were skirmishers ahead of the main army they were allowed to wear green jackets to blend with the battlefield and use their Baker Rifles to max effectiveness. Both the RGJ and the Light Division have now been reformed into the Rifles as of 2007 if i remember correctly
Formed during the Napoleonic wars to fight agaist old bony.....they were the equivalent of snipers...each regiment was given a company of these men, who were the first in the army to adopt camouflage or a 'green jacket'. They were originally called the 95th rifles, then the rifles....and now the riyal green jackets.
Tradionaly they always were ahead of the line infantry so would march in double or 'quick' time to stay ahead as they were always front line soldiers skirmishing, basicaly what modern army decend from today.
They march at a faster pace than line infantry and are the only unit(s) to do drill at the double with their rifles carried "at the trail", rather than "at the shoulder". They have always worn green uniforms with blackened badges for camouflage. The march being played here is "The Keel Row".
For all the shambling Snickers Bars viewing this, the Rifle regiments are descended from the 60th Rifles, otherwise known as the "Royal Americans", because they were a Loyalist regiment of riflemen fighting the terrorists in 1776...you remember the story I'm sure. They went on to become the Rifle Brigade, Kings Royal Rifle Corps etc. (remember "Sharpe"?) Now all amalgamated into the Royal Green Jackets if I'm not mistaken.

Snickers bar here. I will be the first to agree that the British army is one of the finest in the world, with proud traditions and glory going further back then ours can. Not lightly can you dismiss Waterloo or Albuera. But with that, give respect to American arms and the blood price its payed in the "few" years we have been at it. I dont think we have earned the right to stand in front, but most certainly to stand beside our proud British cousins.

The Royal Green Jackets Brigade, consisted of three regiments
1. Ox and Bucks Light Infantry 43rd/52nd
2. 60th Rifles Kings Royal Rifle Corp
3. 95th Rifle Brigade.
in 1966 they became a single Regiment know as The Royal Green Jackets.
The Light Division is now The Rifles Regiment.

The Royal Green Jackets were a regiment that traces back to the 95th rifles of Sharpe fame and were the first regiment in the british army not to wear red. As they were skirmishers ahead of the main army they were allowed to wear green jackets to blend with the battlefield and use their Baker Rifles to max effectiveness. Both the RGJ and the Light Division have now been reformed into the Rifles as of 2007 if i remember correctly

Formed during the Napoleonic wars to fight agaist old bony.....they were the equivalent of snipers...each regiment was given a company of these men, who were the first in the army to adopt camouflage or a 'green jacket'. They were originally called the 95th rifles, then the rifles....and now the riyal green jackets.

Tradionaly they always were ahead of the line infantry so would march in double or 'quick' time to stay ahead as they were always front line soldiers skirmishing, basicaly what modern army decend from today.

They march at a faster pace than line infantry and are the only unit(s) to do drill at the double with their rifles carried "at the trail", rather than "at the shoulder". They have always worn green uniforms with blackened badges for camouflage. The march being played here is "The Keel Row".

For all the shambling Snickers Bars viewing this, the Rifle regiments are descended from the 60th Rifles, otherwise known as the "Royal Americans", because they were a Loyalist regiment of riflemen fighting the terrorists in 1776...you remember the story I'm sure. They went on to become the Rifle Brigade, Kings Royal Rifle Corps etc. (remember "Sharpe"?) Now all amalgamated into the Royal Green Jackets if I'm not mistaken.
