  • @MihkailGorbachev Don't see how you get that from my comment, but thanks bro, I needed that today. :)

  • i would love to be that dudes student

  • @starwarsman96 nah you really wouldn't.

  • @ihavemonkeysinmybutt yes i would, and why wouldnt I?

  • @cause you'll need a shit load of discipline and patience.

  • @ihavemonkeysinmybutt ok you act like i dont

  • If I could have 1$ for every pixel in this video, I'd have 1$.

  • EPIC EPIC EPIC!!!!!!!!

  • I think the best weapon in the world is the AK-47

  • @jsvalino ....really man, REALLY?!?!? you just had to be "that guy" huh *sigh* -_-

  • @jsvalino nononono it is reliable, the weapon i'd have would have: M14EBR or a HKG3K or AK-74M or M16A4 or HKG36 or QBZ-95 or Styer AUG or M1 Garand. these weapons are Accurate unike the AK-47 is reliable but inaccurate. Or if you were an Honorable Warrior you'd fight me with your Blade not your Gun.

  • @jsvalino I think the pen/pencil/quill is even better

  • 240p we meet again...

  • thanks for upload

  • one word.

    hand grenade.

  • i wish this was higher quality

  • @IgorVonE watch?v=mCDh4Wi0cJk

  • @adrian2004tgm Hell yeah!!! Thanks a bunch :D!!

  • @sewagedweller that's actually not correct. I used to have that same kind of bias on nihontos. but there was a test on some ngeog show and the nihonto beat the longsword in outdamaging steel plated armor

  • @TheBaddy28

I actually wouldn't put any weight to that show. No experts (The "Martial Arts Expert" has no experience in European martial arts, and is primarily known for stage choreography; movie fights), no information on the weapons tested(Where did they come from? How were they made?), a novice tester, which is more prone to being random than consistent, and completely inconsistent testing conditions, where the katana is favored with more powerful cuts. The leather was the worst example.

  • @KOxFRESH they will still make katanas, but not in this traditional way

  • one thing they always fail to mention about katana is that its a pure shit when comes to killing men in armor. sure its good for killing fellow samurai in a drunken brawl or chopping some peasants . but when it comes to killing other armored dudes you have to turn blade other way and beat the guy on a head with a blunt side until he passes out .

  • You want a real, traditionally made Japanese katana? Better trade in that new car because they easily cost $30,000 and up. You want a cheaper, modern made sword check out Hanwei or Bugei.

  • did u record this with your dads dick

  • im gona buy 1

  • uhh samurai like never used swords in battle, and btw that wasnt throat to groin...

  • @donesixfour samurai used katanas in battle....where did your facts come from? or am i completely stupid today? 0.0 other wise why the hell did they make katanas in the first place?

  • actually there is and the katana is not the greatest sword. i know of several weapons that are just a great as the katana. this guy is very uneducated and disrespectful to other cultures "there is no other weapon in the world that seems to be regarded as having a spirit of its own" lol tht is the most uneducated thing ive heard in a while. lmao.

  • actually there is and the katana is not the greatest sword. i know of several weapons that are just a great as the katana.

  • If I made a european longsword with the process in these videos, would it be better than the katana?

  • @HunterRooneySweeney Technically it would be a katana, in a shape of the european longsword. Why would it be better?

  • @HunterRooneySweeney

By the time of the longsword (~15th century), Europeans already had the ability to mass produce superior weapon-grade steel, thanks to the development of the blast furnace several centuries earlier - going back to laminated steel (tamahagane in Japan) would be a severe downgrade in quality for them.

  • @HunterRooneySweeney It might but the Europen longsword is very different from the Katana so it might not work well for a european sword.

  • so u have to kick somebodies ass first before u can make a katana

  • this vedio i laim as he duoble hockey stics

  • this looks like a bio of the katana

  • that has been one of my gripes for a long time, or even worse, a "samurai sword". What the crap is a "samurai sword"? Sounds like ignorance to me; it's either a katana, wakazashi or tanto. Make up your mind and get your nose outta a manga comic and check out a real weapon.

  • @merlin4029 lol ikr

  • I HATE when people call it a "katana sword". It's a katana. If you're going to say katana sword, then you might as well say claymore sword, and gladius sword

  • @TheStripesofWhite or ak47 gun or rifle gun, or b-29 airplane, etc.

  • @TheStripesofWhite yup i agree with you ^_^

  • @TheStripesofWhite i bet you're a real tough guy

  • as one song says, "I won't fight 'em. I'll let the AK hit 'em." :)

  • what is the best steel katana? 1060? 1095? damasco? 12x 11x? thanks

  • Kenshin is the best samurai wielder!

  • @leenku2b what is the exact title of the documentary?

  • Notice how the British pronounce samurai "sam-you-rai"

Just like it's "jag-you-ar" instead of "jag-oo-ar" as it's spelling would imply "jaguar"

    Both examples add another syllable.

  • is this even an effective weapon in a zombie apocalypse?

  • @leotheloser Seeing how it can cleanly cut through a solid neck in one move, I'd figure it's even easier if said neck is half-rotten.

  • @leotheloser In the Zombie Survival guide by Max Brooks it says that it is perfect except it high maintenance and a bit long. The slightly shorter wakazashi is more recommended.

  • Comment removed

  • @leotheloser no being far far away on an island in the pacific would be better

  • the carbon in the blade is in the edge that retard said the carbon gives it it's ability to obsorb shock is he fucking crazy the iron core of the blade gives it it's ability to obsorb shock what the fuck man holy shit

  • @loosifur Iron is brittle and has no carbon, steel is iron mixed with carbon and is flexible. You are right through that the edge has more carbon which makes it harder and therefore sharper.

  • @Cokecanninja who ever said iron had carbon not me anyways the idiot narrator said carbon gives it the ability to obsorb shock and it can't. the folded steel is put around a ductile iron core the iron core obsorbs impact from the swords sharp edge when it cuts get it

  • at 6.50 sec thats the practical plus katana made by hanwei lol haha epic failure

  • 40 seconds in and this documentary is already proving to be both retarded and incorrect

  • HD my ass

  • @dovid916 i didnt know your ass is so detailed :DD

  • @beavus1000 It's pretty nice :D

  • @dovid916 xDDDD

  • @dovid916 it is HD on 2 inch mobile phone screen lol :D

  • @dovid916 The HD in this case stands for "Hardly Definable."

  • I'm baffled that it's national geographic and they call it a samurai sword instead of a katana.

  • @zack7677

A katana? what about a taichi? or a tanto? or a no dachi? or a... continues. Really? a Samurai can have a variety of swords.

  • @zack7677 Well, a true Japanese sword is called nihonto. But I don't know if it matters or not.

  • samurai pizza cats

  • damascus sword is the best sword

  • @swordsman3333333 : damascus is pretty wide term, the traditional damascus is also called Wootz but nowdays just the normal forge welded steel is called damascus. the hardest steel in the world is tamahagane, and the hardest part of tamahagane is kawagane. japanese swords cutting edge is made from kawagane and sorft core is made from shingane

  • @poppamies907 i am pretty interested in buying a real good katana and you seem to know pretty much so do you have any advices where in japan to buy a real katana of tamagane?

  • @jihg11 are you worthy enough? as this documentary saids specific people can buy this. that why the chinese are making copies of it so we all can buy it no matter what.

  • @josefu0 that can only the sword maker decide. but are you?

  • @jihg11 no. im not japanese enough. but i do have a japanese in my family.

  • @jihg11 haha. advices

  • @jihg11 there are a couple guys in the us that make katanas out of tamagane.

  • @jihg11 The fact being the only good way to get an authentic katana that isnt a cheap rip off go to japan learn to speak in japanese and have over 5 grand ready to fork up and with air port security and home land security to transport a weapon over seas.

  • @jihg11 If you are in the US, Walter Sorrells or Jesus Hernandez work tamahagane and their blades are very nice, and their prices, while high enough to ward off those who don't know about swords and just want a wall hanger, they are not the rediculous sums charged by some smiths.

  • @Dannybroadsword1 thanks man!:D

  • @jihg11 I recommend to you that when you visit japan, try to buy or ask those japanese where you can buy swords :)

  • @jihg11 You can buy on internet real hand forged katanas, I might help you find one you like...

    Just message me your e-mail

  • @jihg11 same here actually i only got 3 steel katanas but they are for decorations, i need real ones xD

  • @MrR3mix3r yeah it would be nice to have one:)

  • @jihg11 ono yoshimitsu the real deal

  • @poppamies907 tamahagane is GARBAGE steel. the reason it is folded is to force impurities out. Japan has few natural iron deposits so the smelting leaves impurities which must be removed. the reason tamahagane blades cost so much is because it takes so long to process into workable steel. there are plenty of metals stronger than tamahagane. a piece of tamahagane would shatter if you hit it.

  • @Dannybroadsword1 whats your point? the reason the katana is so impressive is everything that went and goes into making them, that they used what they had to make this beautiull and deadly weapon. so saying its GARBAGE steel only highlights the points made i this video and what makes it AWESOME!

  • @duffdeluxe im just saying, that yes, being refined from tamahagane means it has artistic merit, it is not some sort of "adamantium" as some believe. I could, in theory, take scrap sheet steel and fold it with carbon and end up with a blade that looks like tamahagane. the folding of tamahagane is just a way of turning what basically is good quality clinker steel into useable blade steel.

  • @Dannybroadsword1 i agree and how can this guy compare it to the rest of the worlds swords. like for instance my ancestors have been forging steel from an iron ore that is harder than iron. but brittle like tamahagane. i am of african descent by the way. my ancestors have been forging iron and making steel long before the japanese and im talking thousands and thousands of year.

  • man i would like to be a katana maker

  • I still want to see a Katana bash against a Damascus sword... still waiting. Somebody produce a Damascus sword already, dammit!

  • 16th century i thought it was 15th

  • i wish to had katana

  • i just dont understand how people thousands of years ago new how to make something like tamahagani (dunno if i spelt that right) :P

  • @NHLbamboon they had to. the iron ore in Japan is very impure, and folding it was often the only way to make it decent enough for blades. it is strong, but not the "Jesus steel" some will have you believe

  • this is cus asians are the best!

  • The name of the episode is 'The secrets of Japan' right ?

  • you can look up for traditional katana at japan-sword-katana,jp but I can tell it cost Alot and I saw one of em which cost around 50.000 usd lol

  • Dominated the battlefields for over a thousand years.... Bows were the main weapon of Samurai originaly, then it became spears, swords weren't even popular until after the end of Sengoku. Katana's aren't even 1000 years old yet.

  • @OidrunkIrirshninja um yes they are actually they have been in used since around 700 AD and were always the favorable weapon of samurai

  • @OidrunkIrirshninja sorry man i was thinkin of a different sword the katana was made during the Muramachi period and that was from 1392 to 1573

  • @latino1samurai Which sword are you referring to? The uchigatana, the sword commonly known today as katana was first made in the 14th century. The only sword i can place in the time of 700 aC right now is the chokuto, which has absolutly nothing to do with a katana.

Also favored for what? Certanitly not battle, as differential hardening left the blade with a great reistance to blunting but prone to chip easyly.

  • @BadMartini you're right that was another type of sword the katana was originated in the Muramachi period sorry

  • thats it i'm going to Japan

  • In a zombie apocalypse (thats to say if it ever happens), my blade of choice would be the katana.

  • I wish i could make anduril and keep it. Its the sword forged by the Shards of narsil for those who dont know. Although id probably call it something cooler like... Well i dont know yet. Ill find out soon :) . that would be so cool thou. I would have the sword that cut off sauron's finger wilst thou was wielding the ring of power. I always wondered why he didnt turn invisible :P...

  • @sina510 Nerd! lol

  • its my dream that we wouldnt use pussy guns anymore, i wish wars would go bk to the time with honour and i.e. swords

  • @ACStudiosC Me too. Then the real men who train, would be the shit and Halo geeks wouldn't be so prestigious to the military! For Gondor and for Rohan!!!

  • Its my dream to forge my own sword

  • @0Elfonfire I want to go to that guy and do that, but this is him " Okay... I can forge a sword for you but answer this mysical question DO YOU HAVE 50,000 BUCKS FOR ME TO BORROW?"

  • @Theninjalemon I know a way to bypass that! However it requires mad skillz and an old score to settle.

  • dont the workers need goggles to protect from infrared light?

  • At 1:05 why do they move their wrist like that? I also seen it in Kill Bill.

  • @evilmm80 more power in the swing

  • @evilmm80 its something called Chiburi. its basically, symbolically, shaking the blood off of the blade before you sheath it

  • MY GRANDFATHER WAS A BLACKSMITH

  • there's a company in tokyo called sword something, but its located in japan tokyo, gl to anyone wanting the old style katana

  • @TheKale808 well if you want to pay 20000 dollars...

  • Choppy Chop wideo is blurry blilliant ! the art of choppy off head is outstanding ! Marvelous blurry marvelous the way they can make choppy off head an art form,, blurry marvelous !

  • @PidgeonDeath Nice catch.

It would seem that this t.v. show has gotten its dates mixed up. The samurai class (also known as bushi) started to appear around the 9th-10th century and used the katana efficiently. This class lasted as long as the fuedal system existed, which in Japan was during the middle of the 19th century. I suspect that the "Developed in the 16th century" refers either to the final method that all katanas were held to or the actual heigth of the bushi class in Japan.

  • Its so sharp that if u look at it long enough it will cut you're eyes

    lol

  • @comeon542 lolololol u stupid lolol

  • a bit dramatic and idealistic, but a great informative source on the making of ancient japanese blades

  • It would be awesome to have a sword produced soley for yourself like in Kill Bill.

  • can you upload the series on HD or at least in 480?

  • i would love to have 1

  • it would be an honor to once have a traditional japanese katana. it would even be an honor just holding one.. I find this truly incredibly awesome.

  • awesome. gonna go make one now. pffffff

  • ASIANS OWN ^^

  • The short sword is still the best. WOO ROMANS

  • i heard the real katanas were delevoped by koreans

  • @maxayuda2 Korea invented forging curved blades, Japan took it and "perfected" it

  • @maxayuda2

The prototype was developed by Chinese in Tang Dynasty. Katana (or I would say Tachi) was the improved version of Tang Dao.

  • yep katanas and good old vintage roland synths ...japans finest

  • i find it funny when people think a samurai and a ninja are the same thing

  • @aR3DF0Xa

i think its IRRITATING! but not evrybody is innerested in this stuff.

  • adamantium samuri sword. indestructable :D

  • Nothing is indestructible. A simple coal fire can ruin any blade.

  • Eu tambem gostava de ter uma,mas especial criada com fogo e magia branca, quando tiver melhores condiçoes compro uma na ordem dos 10.000 euros.

  • chinks could never make a sword like the japs.

  • the only weapon capable of beeing better is our bodie

  • The katana is so sharp it can cut another katana in half.

  • you just divided by zero....

  • i can't believe how much they made the broadsword look bad in this show!

  • Comment removed

  • if that's what you really think, you still got way too much (and i really mean TOO MUCH!) to learn about swords...

  • Comment removed

  • a 14 year old kid won't be able to comprehend why... don't sweat it kid!

  • @icecrimson In feuldal Japan a 14 year old would have been trained from the age of 5 and would be able to use the katana with the efficiency of a samurai. Age means nothing of knowledge

  • @DMoore6977 that WAS back then...

  • @icecrimson , you shouldn't judge my intellectual comprehension by age, and my the last 5 days i have learned alot about weapons the broadsword is moslty made for cutting and it actually stun the enemy more then it cuts, but i still prefer a katana its ligth, its resilient, and greats at slashing.

  • do some much more intensive research kid... better visit this site --> thearma(dot)org

i know katanas are aesthetically beautiful and i personally like katanas too just for the sole reason that its HYPED!

but in terms of functionality, i prefer euro swords more because of its rigid construction because katanas only have friction to hold its part together

yes, katanas are great cutters and resilient but so are western swords

there are too many factors why the katana IS NOT the ultimate sword

  • I made one at home it's awesome for being home made :D

  • "For over a thousand years, one weapons has..."

    "Developed in the 16th century..."

    Wat?

  • "The birth of the samurai sword, dates back before the 10th century."

but even then XD i dunno

  • The sword has been around in Japan for over 1000 years. Swords were made in Japan starting around AD 280's thanks to either China or Korea.

  • Give the man some credit. They tried to get ahead of their time, haha

  • @PidgeonDeath they did not make them like katanas before that time, i forget the name but they were far more curved and often longer before they developed the katana, but they were always folded steel blades.

  • @MagzOneuk

ur talkin about the tachi. they were used by the earlier samurai who fought on horseback, however even though they were carried they were rarely used for fear of injuring the horse. those guys stuck with the bow.

  • @PidgeonDeath katana have been around longer then that but didnt have the true shape that most people recognize as a katana in todays world. They usually had longer blades, or were more curved. The katana was always evolving.

  • @PidgeonDeath first katanas were made a 1000 years ago, but they were improved over centuries, and the best one today is the one constructed in 16century

  • @PidgeonDeath

with 16th century the propably mean the zenit of katana forging.

or they think katana will dominate the battlefield until 2600 xD

    oml

  • @PidgeonDeath "dates back than before the 10th century..."

  • @PidgeonDeath used before the 1500's but made ultimate in the 16th centuries.

  • @PidgeonDeath The Katana has evolved for many years.

The first ones were developed during the 10th century, but todays Katana with a blade usually 73cm long was developed in late 16th century.

  • @PidgeonDeath What they probably mean is that the Japanese sword as it is today evolved over a thousand years ago, from older versions true to the form of the Katana like the Tachi. The Katana is more recent.

  • as obi-wan said: an elegant weapon of a more civilized age.

  • you don't need a katana to fight a dog or racoon. a tree branch will do more trhan enough lol

  • i've decided that when i grow older i'm going to carry around a katana on my back in case some dog or raccoon or something like that tries to attack me. katana's are much more smooth and elegant than a gun. and they don't make any sound so people wont start running for cover like they do with a gunshot.

  • Obviously you have never given this much thought. You will be ARRESTED FOR THAT!!!!!!!!!! You cannot carry a lethal weapon like a katana in public. They have to be in their bag and the bag has to be tied shut. You must be kidding. What, are you fucking retarded. And another thing, you dont think that they ill run when you pull out a 3 foot long razor blade. Jesus youtube has went to the fuckin tards.

  • @ashmamma2003 people carry swords around my town all the time as long as the weapon is in its sheath you can carry it and if necassary you can use it as self defense same rules apply for guns, it must be in its holster. the second amendment doesnt only apply to guns man

  • @ashmamma2003

Actually you're wrong, at least where I live (Canada) as long as it isn't concealed you're allowed to carry weapons openly. They might ask you WHY you have it..

And putting it in a bag would make it a concealed weapon. Stop calling people retards and think before you speak.

  • @Bookstop1337

Aren't fighting knives prohibet in Canada? As I recall Canada has loosest laws concerning knives, but sword is not just normal pocket knife.

As I recall over 10 cm blades were typically prohibet all over the world.

  • @lastmalkavian

I know that switchblades are illegal but no as long as you carry it openly you're allowed to carry it around. Not that I WOULD.. but as long as it's not concealed I'm pretty sure it's fine.
