how much more expensive was this than the G51vx? mine is also a p8700 with a 260m but the model is way lower. got it in august 2009 i believe. having heating issues with it though. >:l
So according to the ASUS Live Update (bios uptater) "There is no need to update the environment", which I take to mean I already have the latest BIOS version. I've tried installing the newest Nvidia drivers, and it'll work for that one session, but when I put my computer to sleep and wake it up, the issue comes back. I'm running Win7 Pro 64-bit, instead of the standard Vista Home Premium.
i stil have the problem after the bios update. im have so far tried every damn version asus has provided. I didnt use the flash drive method of bios update. i just pressed F2 during start up and updated it there, can someone help? see any problems?
@xuchenxixu You either use the USB method or make a partition on your harddrive that is FAT32 and put the bios file there. The latest bios should fix the problem. IF YOU UPDATED the bios and it didn't fix the problem contact ASUS. CHECK and make sure your bios has been updated to the latest one. - Travis
@optimaloptimusprimus thanks for the help. flashed it again with a usb and stressed it again with furmark. up to 97 degrees no problem. but i was just playing MW2 and it downgraded again. fml, at about 82 degrees. any idea?
hey can u give me an answer on this. I got a g71gx...just like urs. but I go the more updated one...as in I didnt have to install the new bios. I remember u sayin u upgraded Vista to Ultimate...well I upgraded mine to Win 7 Ultimate x64...what driver do I need to control the lights on the laptop if u kno? thanks
@drifter5064 Hey, you can download all the drivers for windows 7 on the asus support website. Or you shoudl have gotten an dvd with drivers on it. The driver should be under ATK section.
BUT...the games didnt run so smoothly like with original BIOS version. Im frustrated because i dont know original BIOS version. if anyone knows witch BIOS version are currently installing in ASUS i would be really happy.
I bought this PC a few days ago, and i install Win7(32 bit) also in the hard disk and a few games that run GREAT!. Next, i changed the original BIOS with the last one recomended on ASUS page that fixes some Win7 problems...
Result? Disaster! The problem of the FPS appeared.
I tryed to change BIOS versions, to 1201, 1501,1704. Nothing. Always the same. Then i notice that BIOS version during boot update was always 0904. I was making the winflash in Win7. I then made it in Vista and turned OK. But
@SaturnAR were you able to fix the problem? I have windows 7 64 bits 1704 and i dont know what do anymore... Im thinking in format pc :\ its the only thing i can come up with

ME & a friend both have the G71Gx best buy model. And both of our laptops run 100% fine. the Bios update fixes the problem. hey man, i just bought this laptop and i have to say, this kicks ass, one problem though, im still unsure about the bios update, whats the name of the bios update for this laptop, i just have to make sure. thanks again for the info.
On Asus website, it says that we should not update the bio if there is nothing wrong with our laptop. We know for sure that everyone of them has this problem (right?).
I am just wondering how does updating the bio hurt the stability. Please let us know if know it
sup, i just messaged you, but to everyone... I made a short crysis SP demo, the pre release version, so i probably doesnt run as good, as the real one with patches.
Also, how is the screens visibility for peers; assuming the ideal conditions of a darkened room, viewing from a side-angle with the screen tilted slightly downward, toward the viewers. If it's impossible to see clearly then its of no use to me.
I'm seriously considering making this purchase. This video was quite helpful.
The only thing holding me back frombuying this thing is my concern about heat. One would assume that playing Crysis it would heat up fairly quickly, however I have no desire to play Crysis. I play Total War games and RTS's mostly. I'd like to know your thoughts on its temperature guage; playing something like Empire TW, on a desk in a cold room, would you say that the machine would become too hot for comfort?
Everything is upgradeable? Thats brilliant i thought only RAM and HDD can be upgraded on laptops. BTW does overclocking close to max overheat the system or is it relatively nice? Thanks for the SC2 comment im researching as much as i can just wanted an opinion.
This weekend i will have time to make a Full Review of the laptop. I'd like suggestions on what you guys would like to see covered in the review. I will be taking off the back cover and showing you the insides, CPU, RAM, GPU, HD 1 & HD 2 compartments. Cooling Fan removal and Mini Pcie wifi card. This laptop is a much better deal then Priceware M17x Craptop. - OOP
PS. no cooling pad it needed. Because this laptop has 4 lil legs that rise it above the flat surface it needs to sit on. And it allows really good air flow for the cooling fan to exhust the heat out. And when you run a GPU heavy benchmark the the fan woofs out the heat, without much noise. It's about as loud as a 7200rpm HD out of the computer case.
StarCraft 2 requiremnts as far as i searched google. Ever Heard of Google ??? Minumum Requirements GFX: GeForce 7/8 Series or Radeon 1000/2000 with 256 MB RAM CPU: Pentium 4 RAM: 1 GB Internet: ADSL 1 Mbit Recommended Requirements GFX: GeForce 8000 or Radeon 2000 series with 512 MB RAM CPU: Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2. RAM: 2 GB Internet: ADSL 3 Mbit I can't waite to test it. -OOP
Have you tried DOX's graphics drivers OOP? They are just optimized graphics drivers meant for gaming that improve frames on a few games, especially Crysis ;)!
I just bought my 2 days ago and today when i was playing COD4, the FPS problem happens and drop to about 1 or 2 FPS and i call up ASUS and double checked my BIO is up to date and it's currently at version 1302. Could you tell me what BIO version are you using? =( i really dont want to return this laptop..... (Cry...)
Everyone is using the 1201 bios, 1302 did not fix anything, so install the 1201 bios via USB flashing it manually- live update is useless and screws up the install of bios ALL THE TIME.
You could also try installing better graphics drivers like DOX 185.85 - this hsould fix your problem...
The live update had never worked for me, It never displays any updated. And i would just waite for Asus to come out with updated drivers. You won't see me running modded dox drivers on my 1228.00 laptop. - oop
how does this compare to the MSI GT725-074US p8600 (2.4GHz) Radeon HD 4850 and Gateway P-7807u FX p8600 (2.4GHz) GeForce 9800M GTS? and does it get extremely hot?
The 9800m GTS (7807u) is good but it only has 64pipes and is technically behind the times as the 200 series (which is in the G71GX) is the better card obviously (it's faster and has 112 pipes). The Radion HD 4850 is a different beast in it's on but good luck with finding drivers on that thing (rare and far between). Grab the G71GX-RX05 showed off on this video, it's way more affordable and up to date to today's tech than the 2 laptops you mentioned, you'll buy it and then love it!
Alright sweet. Thanks for the response too! Instead of ordering it and waiting, I decided to go down to Best Buy and pick it up myself. Save a little and get it quicker. So Hopefully, I'll have it later tonight!
Thanks alot man for posting these vids. I was actually just going to order the Gateway FX but I saw this one and I'm sold! Everything else run great on it? No other problems besides the BIOS update? And can you give us a link to that update? I'm actually going to order mine (from Best Buy) In about an hour. Thanks man!
When you buy your laptop & register it online, sign into the member section of the website and goto the G71gx Best Buy model page and download the bios from there. - OOP
Now sure what else you wanna hear or see. This laptop is a Great buy. Everything in it is upgradeable. HD, GPU,CPU, Wifi mini pcie card. Not sure about the memory. would like to see if anyone can stuff 12 gigs into it. That would be cool.
Also, who the heck would use Very High settings on Crysis or stock/Vanilla Crysis settings for that matter. CUDAATS Mod is the way to go in getting Crysis looking the best it can possibly go (better than Very High) while getting better frames that Very High won't give you. Using Level 4 or Level 5 on CUDAATS and playing the game on DX9 will not only make Crysis look better but play faster than very high. With the mod (and using Turbogear), Crysis runs EXCELLENT on this laptop with 40fps+ ! BUY!
Could you check your whats your ram runing at. There some people reporting g71 runing at 667mhz.
"The BIOS is running the RAM divider at 4:5 which in turn is under clocking the RAM to 667MHz. The product specs clearly say this is 800MHz RAM speeds. To fix this Asus needs to update the BIOS to use a 2:3 divider. Please do this ASAP as this severely diminishes performance. This is happening on the newly released 1201 BIOS to fix the thermal policy for the video card down clocking at 82C."
Actually, people who are reporting that are running TurboGear (like the guy mentions in the video). If you have TurboGear disabled, the ram goes up to 800mhz. The ram is downclocked to 667mhz when using TurboGear in order to not burn out the ram. With TurboGear overclocked to the max it can go, the ram speed does go up to almost 800mhz but again this is a safety feature so that you don't burn out the ram.
Just a comment, your not supposed to set this on your lap. It's 8.8 LBS. and it can cut off blood to your legs or cause a clots in your legs. SO set this on a table to play it. ALSO it's don't get that hot on the underside they have a really good cooling soultion that sucks air from the undersides and sucks it over the GPU & memory slots and blows it out the back and it really blows. With now i'm running Furmark @ 1440x900 and it's Avg 30 fps Max 56fps running at 101C. for one hour.
DUDEDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ur fucking GPU is on fire...I got the G71Gx and my 260 dont even go past 55c

101C seems really hot though, whats your ambient temp?
