cheers for this, been looking for a home workout for lats as opposed to splashing out on a gym membership, and this is exactly what i was looking for, thanks.
hi this is Avdhesh i am from India i really want to get a lean body but, the thing is that i am really not able to do that, and according to me the weakest part of ma body is the back. I have tried mant times to do pull ups but i end up doing only one or two times the max what should i do?
Excellent video. I think 5 sets of that may be overkill for me right now, but I'm going to go out to the park right now and try to get a few sets in. Came on youtube looking for some inspiration, and all I could have I asked for. Thank you.
hey guys, my only problem with this workout is that i don't have a pull-up bar..what are the alternatives that i can do to somehow approximate its effect?...can anybody please help...tnx alot...great vid...
uhm, honestly i dont really know of any way to approximate the effect of pullup bars. its just..a great and unique work out. The best i can advice i can give you is either find a park near you with like, monkey bars or something (i know it sounds stupid but thats what i did for a while..) or make a makeshift pullup bar in like a doorway in ur house. its not hard. hope that helped..
The straps are their so when he is doing his pull-ups, his forearms dont die out before his lats have gotten fried. In basic terms , you dont use your grip strength when you have your straps on.
Hey Scooby, I noticed in your self spotting rig video that you have the bar suspended from the ceiling. Now what I want to know is that is that bar hung from the wood studs (or whatever you call them) in the ceiling or do you have some other method of securing it? And if the bar is hung from the studs, how safe is it? I mean, they're made of wood right, so I'm kinda unsure about that. Don't want them to buckle or nothing.
Try the way stated in the video. You will surely get better results. The explosive movements can turn into cheating movements like kicking your legs to keep up the tempo, swinging, etc. Slow and controlled is something you will always hear with exercises. (prevents injury, maximizes results.)
What you said doesn't make any sense. Doing pull-ups explosively IS CHEATING and will put more stress on the joints. Think about it, how does a slow pull-up put more stress on the joints? And no, slower pull-ups don't "waste" energy because the statement itself doesn't make any sense. You see, if you pull "explosively," the momentum created by the swinging gets you up, not your muscles. Therefore your muscles work less if you cheat, so you don't get the best results.
I was talking about someone that said swinging puts less stress on the joints. Doesn't make sense. Clicked reply, but somehow my reply showed up new as an independent message. Also, for people who think swinging is better, it's not. Sure, you can do more reps if you CHEAT on a pull up, but more of the momentum brings you up instead of the muscles pulling the body up.
forget all that chemical crap...just eat eat eat...as much junk as possible...and eat at time before u sleep...its pretty unhealthy but youll gain weight,,,,just make sure al the excuess weight is turned into muslc eand not a fat pack
The "excess weight" is fat, and fat does not turn into muscle. You need to eat things that help your muscles regrow when they are damaged by lifting. This means eating healthy, not eating junk.
Wait, you tried everything EXCEPT protein shakes? If you think protein shakes contain bad chemicals, your thinking wrong. Protein is an essential item in your diet and taking in more can help you in muscle growth and "gaining weight".
I love all your videos as well as the gadgets you made to get to where you are now :) You've helped me a lot especially with the lats. I was just wondering what you do for a living. Have you mentioned it in any of the videos?
@ datanasovd : Well the answer is easy !! I think youre an Right-Hander !! You need you right arms more then your left ! which means you "train" you right arm more times then youre right ;)
nice videos i watched your killer home arm work out n its great but i have a question:
When im working out my arms i have noticed that that my right biceps is bigger than my left biceps i realize this is pretty common but do you have any advice on evening it out?
Hey Godsmackfan18, I can't quite figure out what you are saying/asking with your typos and your incomplete sentence. I think you might be asking again what "fragkid1" asked, please see how I answered him.

Awesome man...the best workout tips ive seen since i really dont have enough time to go to the gym my home workouts werent cutting it...these are awesome tips..thanks
Great body, but I have just one question more, what weights do you recommend for any ages to train one's biceps? I'm 13 at the moment, so I'd like to know what weights should I be lifting. (You might say I'm too young, but I just like bodybuilding)
Hey Ergooo, yes IMHO you are too young for bodybuilding. To answer your question, the correct weight is one that you can lift with proper form for 6-20 reps. Less than 6 and its too heavy, more than 20 and its too light.
Awesome tips man, I just started to get back into the scene about 4 months back and I think your videos will help my training a lot more.
I did most of your exercises prior to coming across them today but I am fairly new to the youtube scene but I too believe in strong form as its crucial to good health you are a great mentor and I will use these videos as a guideline for my future workouts.
Hey Rohan1990, A few weeks or months away from training will not kill you. Its much quicker to gain the muscle back than it is to add it in the first place. Letting injuries heal before exercising again is prudent, follow your doctors guidelines as to when/what you can do exercise wise.
Hey gr3atkhali, glad you get something out of the videos. I do lots of cardio, its the only way I can stay passibly lean. I probably average 90 minutes a day, somedays as much as 4hrs and somedays zero.
Hey laugninsilence, glad you like the vids. I'll be working on a shoulder video soon but I want to do a real pushups video first. I get tired of people doing them with horrible form at the gym.
yo man, ive been doin ya chest work out and im definately satisfied wit da pump and results. im seein results after only 6 days. i was actually wonderin if you have any ideas for at home forearm and calf work outs.
Hey AlectroOn, supersets are great for people who have been training a year or more. I wouldnt recommend them or any other advanced technique for the first year of lifting.
You seem like an expert so ima ask you this. Im 15 years old and ive been working out for a few months now but i have gained mininum results. I have been lifting heavy, one body part a day with as good form as i can. I eat 4-6 meals a day includeing healthy foods. I was just wondering what your thought are on the H.I.T. (high intensity training) workout plan. Please respond. ty.
Depends how far you are into puberty, *STOP!* if you're still in the quickly growing stage. You may stunt your growth. Just wait a bit.
If you're almost at the adult stage though and by adult I mean adult height and body mass(Which I'm assuming you aren't or else you wouldn't be asking this question.) Then I have no idea what you're doing wrong. :-/
Well by time ur 14 u are within 2 inchhes of ur final height for most pple so i havnt got much to lose, plus to stunt ur growth u have to be lifting 150% of ur bodyweight. thanks for your concern but i need to lift for my sport. (wrestling)
fragkid1, Thanks for the ultimate compliment! No I dont use steroids, its taken me 26 years of lifting 5 days a week to build my body. Steroid users could build my body in a few years, if they dont get seriously injured or arrested that is.
another great vid :) Your videos are soooo helpful and so is your site, I didn't know how to do proper curls and such before I saw your vids, they've taught me alot. Also ive been doing your bicep/tricep killer workout and i have got great results so far :D
Hey Erdbeerbowle, I find when doing the alternating grip pulllups that the underhand grip side gets the majority of the load and has to work the hardest. For those of use who cant do one-handed pullups, this is a good alternative.
Hey Scooby. Sorry, I don't know how to make a video response. Please check out my channel and view the response and tell me what you think. (info in video)
I'm suddenly reminded of that video where the kid puts his barbell through the side of his fish tank... Then screams for his mom.. That shit was funny. Oh.. good video by the way!
If you can do 5-10 with good form (no kicking or swinging) then this workout is appropriate for you. If you cant then I would recommend looking at my video "assisted pullups".
Great video man. I'm fairly new to working out. I am hooked though. I think about it all day at work and then at night I go to the gym and go all out. When I'm done, I do cardio and by the time I finish my cardio, I wanna lift again!!! I don't because I realize the damage that can be done by overworking your body.
Currently I supplement with:
NO2 Platinum
CE2
Isopure Protein
GNC multivitamins
Anyone that wants to exchange advice and tips, please message me. Im a sponge!
I take some of those supplements too, NO2 black, mega men multivitamin/multimineral, but I take other supplements too, like 17 hd by vyotech, oryx goat whey protein by vyotech, kre-alkylyn creatine by sci-fit, red hots fat burner, but I prefer lipodrene fat burner by high-tech, I also take dual action cleanse formula every other month and I also take coral calcium
You're welcome, and I don't know if you ever got my messages before...you never replied back to me...But I was always telling you about how great your website is, and how a friend of mine is following your routines to get more muscular, he trains at home without weights, he does push-ups and sit-ups, thank you for sharing your secrets with everyone, and you look so awesome, I'm almost as ripped as you but not quite, getting there
that pic in the beggining of this video is crazy i want lats just like that ....id like to say thnx for all of the videos they give me alot of motivation to keep working out thnx man take care
can you help me with this. i have been trying to figure it out but dunno.
i heard that your body uses like sugar carb first and then protein and fat last for energy. So in a workout you are burning carb and then protein and then fat. so eating protein is kind a waste? how does ur body get energy?
oh nvm. i was wrong. so ur body burns carb and then fat. it doesnt use protein until after the fat. just gotta do some research hehehe hhmm. i need to cut down my carb and fat. thanks for the videos and website.
Hey Ichigo101, IMHO you are making this way too complicated. Eat 5-6 well balanced meals a day and you are fine. Chicken breast, brown rice and steamed veggys.
Hey I did All yr Killer workout Man Cause of u Now i get a real Shape 6pack chest biceps all ^^ and all.. The key is strong training with A good Heathly nutriton that'S mean no hotdog no hamurger no fastfood no junk food Onbly fruit vegetables Meat(not alot lol) and All u got to do is follow the workout of Scobby and u gonna get A great Shape
Hey velovick, the indisputable advantage of doing supersets is that it lets you pack in more sets into your workout hour. In back workouts its marginal but for chest and arms its much more significant.
Hey kiddoOo, I have to fight my natural inclination to be a boring, sleep-inducing professor. Gotta keep people awake and give them a reason to watch the video till the end :)
Hey Erdgeerbowle (strawberry punch), a few months isnt long to be away from weights and you will recover your strength very rapidly. Get in there and lift :) Dont worry, the funky shorts are still in my drawer just waiting for the right video.
Thanks Scooby1961! I really want to thank you for posting all of your videos. You've really taught me on how to have great work outs in short periods of time. You've shown how to workout really slow to get a maximum work out with correct form. I just want to say by watching your videos, it encourages me to lift more weights. Thanks scooby!
Hey 6strngplayer, excellent point. Visible gains in muscle take many seasons of lifting, its a very slow process which is why you have to enjoy the journey :)
Hey t3hK3nny, I've been having a horrible time with video editing software crashing which is why it took me over a month to make this video. I need to get an iMac!
Just wanted to give you a shout out of thanks scoob for helping folks train at home. I have been training on and off since I was 18 (now 37) and have no time to get to the gym. Your vids have given me some great ideas!
First off, congrats on a fine video and getting in great shape! Now a nitpick. I prefer to leave my legs as straight as possible while doing pullups so that there is no bend at the waist. I find this is useful for building core strength. Indeed when my legs start to rise this is a sign of fatigue.
Also, I would do away with the straps, your hands will quickly gain the proper strength to carry your weight. Last, the pullup where the bar winds up behind the head is often said to be dangerous, but I have been doing it for years(along with other variations) and I don't see the danger if you use proper form...could be they are just more difficult. Thanks again for a great workout.
Hey intracoast, I tried pullups for a year without straps and was always limited by my lack of grip strength. I finally decided that for me it didnt make sense to limit my lat development because of a weak grip. Its a personal decision.
Thanks for the response, really appreciate it. You have a much more developed physique then I do so you have to carry more weight which might account for this. I just glad someone of your accomplishment has such high praise for my favorite exercise!
Good point, I should have mentioned that. By bending the legs (or keeping them straight) it changes the angle and thus works out the lats differently. My pullup bar is in my room and I have to bend my legs to keep my feet from hitting the floor.
What kind of protein intake would you reccomend per lb of bodyweight ?
I try and eat as much protein as possible but about 1 day a week i just dont have any appetite and all my hard work from the rest of the week seems to go to waste.I feel right now i'm struggling to keep the weight i have but i do notice a strength gain when i really push myself to eat a lot of protein (boiled egg whites arent exactly tasty lol)
Hey fatuesque, Its hard to know who to believe on protein requirements for bodybuilders as the suggestions vary widely. Personally, I eat about 1g/lb/day and that is total protein from animal and veg sources.
Welcome back, and thanks for another great video and for all the great fitness and bodybuilding advice. I'm looking forward to the killer home shoulder workout, which I guess is coming!
By the way, what's the weight of the big plates you use on the dumbbells? I have been wondering if people actually use the heavier plates with dumbbells because of their large diameter.
Hey AbsentMail, the big plates I'm using are 25's. They are to big physically to use for many exercises but they are fine for dumbbell rows. Doing chest flys with 25s just doesnt work because it limits the range of motion too much.
"Lats" is short for Latissimus Dorsi, you can see why nobody calls them by their real name :) Lats are the muscle that give your torso that V taper. I dont believe that pullups activate the pecs at all.

well for rows i thing you could let your shoulder drift a bit forward - the lats gets stretched and its better contraction at the top. imo

another great vid :) Your videos are soooo helpful and so is your site, I didn't know how to do proper curls and such before I saw your vids, they've taught me alot. Also ive been doing your bicep/tricep killer workout and i have got great results so far :D
sonor681 4 years ago
Hey sonor681, glad you are seeing results from my killer arm workout!!
scooby1961 4 years ago
Forgot to ask, which arm does the alternating grip pull-up work out more? The underhand or the overhand?
Erdbeerbowle 4 years ago
Hey Erdbeerbowle, I find when doing the alternating grip pulllups that the underhand grip side gets the majority of the load and has to work the hardest. For those of use who cant do one-handed pullups, this is a good alternative.

great video thank you for the information. does it matter if i can only do 5-10 pullups at one time?
mulletdevil 4 years ago
Hey mulletdevil,
If you can do 5-10 with good form (no kicking or swinging) then this workout is appropriate for you.

Im a sponge!
jonnycapp 4 years ago
I take some of those supplements too, NO2 black, mega men multivitamin/multimineral, but I take other supplements too, like 17 hd by vyotech, oryx goat whey protein by vyotech, kre-alkylyn creatine by sci-fit, red hots fat burner, but I prefer lipodrene fat burner by high-tech, I also take dual action cleanse formula every other month and I also take coral calcium

Hey MisterBlack,
Yes, its easy to do sloppy form on the 1 arm rows and pull you back out. I cringe at the gym when I see most people doing them.

bigbigtinyman 4 years ago
can you help me with this. i have been trying to figure it out but dunno.
i heard that your body uses like sugar carb first and then protein and fat last for energy. So in a workout you are burning carb and then protein and then fat. so eating protein is kind a waste? how does ur body get energy?
Ichigo101 4 years ago
oh nvm. i was wrong. so ur body burns carb and then fat. it doesnt use protein until after the fat. just gotta do some research hehehe hhmm. i need to cut down my carb and fat. thanks for the videos and website.
Ichigo101 4 years ago
Hey Ichigo101, IMHO you are making this way too complicated. Eat 5-6 well balanced meals a day and you are fine. Chicken breast, brown rice and steamed veggys.

any particular benefit of doing supersets?
velovick 4 years ago
Hey velovick, the indisputable advantage of doing supersets is that it lets you pack in more sets into your workout hour. In back workouts its marginal but for chest and arms its much more significant.

Damn, it has been a while since your last video. And damn, you are looking as buff as ever. I'll have the try this out.
Thing is though, I haven't been working out for months, and I think I'm getting a little soft. I'll probably have to start at the basics first.

Hey 6strngplayer, excellent point. Visible gains in muscle take many seasons of lifting, its a very slow process which is why you have to enjoy the journey :)

vtie 4 years ago 2
Hey vtie, Glad to hear it!
scooby1961 4 years ago
First off, congrats on a fine video and getting in great shape! Now a nitpick. I prefer to leave my legs as straight as possible while doing pullups so that there is no bend at the waist. I find this is useful for building core strength. Indeed when my legs start to rise this is a sign of fatigue.
intracoast 4 years ago
Also, I would do away with the straps, your hands will quickly gain the proper strength to carry your weight. Last, the pullup where the bar winds up behind the head is often said to be dangerous, but I have been doing it for years(along with other variations) and I don't see the danger if you use proper form...could be they are just more difficult. Thanks again for a great workout.
intracoast 4 years ago
Hey intracoast, I tried pullups for a year without straps and was always limited by my lack of grip strength. I finally decided that for me it didnt make sense to limit my lat development because of a weak grip. Its a personal decision.
scooby1961 4 years ago
Thanks for the response, really appreciate it. You have a much more developed physique then I do so you have to carry more weight which might account for this. I just glad someone of your accomplishment has such high praise for my favorite exercise!
intracoast 4 years ago
Hey intracoast,
Good point, I should have mentioned that. By bending the legs (or keeping them straight) it changes the angle and thus works out the lats differently. My pullup bar is in my room and I have to bend my legs to keep my feet from hitting the floor.
scooby1961 4 years ago
I did notice that about your pullup bar. Great video. Great demo of a great work out that can be done successfully from home. Keep up the good work!

What kind of protein intake would you reccomend per lb of bodyweight ?
I try and eat as much protein as possible but about 1 day a week i just dont have any appetite and all my hard work from the rest of the week seems to go to waste.I feel right now i'm struggling to keep the weight i have but i do notice a strength gain when i really push myself to eat a lot of protein (boiled egg whites arent exactly tasty lol)
fatuesque 4 years ago
Hey fatuesque, Its hard to know who to believe on protein requirements for bodybuilders as the suggestions vary widely. Personally, I eat about 1g/lb/day and that is total protein from animal and veg sources.
scooby1961 4 years ago
Welcome back, and thanks for another great video and for all the great fitness and bodybuilding advice. I'm looking forward to the killer home shoulder workout, which I guess is coming!
By the way, what's the weight of the big plates you use on the dumbbells? I have been wondering if people actually use the heavier plates with dumbbells because of their large diameter.
AbsentMail 4 years ago
Hey AbsentMail, the big plates I'm using are 25's. They are to big physically to use for many exercises but they are fine for dumbbell rows. Doing chest flys with 25s just doesnt work because it limits the range of motion too much.

Wow i always thought pull ups were for the chest. I've never even heard the word "lats" before.
Dasasad 4 years ago 2
"Lats" is short for Latissimus Dorsi, you can see why nobody calls them by their real name :) Lats are the muscle that give your torso that V taper. I dont believe that pullups activate the pecs at all.
scooby1961 4 years ago
what are some ways to reduce the soreness after a workout like that?
