  • 0:08 hAHA---SOLD OUT..... i expect as much...lol

  • I love the way that the editing to this video creatively referenced the disjointed nature of the music itself, by making a seamless visual representation of the style. Cool beans. :p

  • This mans a fucking visionary.

  • anyone know the song at 0.19? I know its just a simple beat but it has a nice groove lol

  • @SalterWobchak

The Exploding Psychology hope that helps

  • @TheRepublicOfJohn thanks man, amazing track!!

  • is jus' like pudddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd bdddddddpddddddd... it's like.

  • there's an app for that :D

  • Squarepusher's the fucking Daddy.

  • lol he said "LIKE" like 30 times

  • "the drums become the melody or the melody becomes the drums" lol

  • push 2

  • @NewtownSN Hahaha, what a retarded mistake!! They should have done their homework on that one!!

  • :52 wait how was granular synthesis like again? LOL

  • I love it how he always explains things in interviews by making noises :D

    0:50

  • @NTFavorit I try to explain things to non-musical people the same way, but since I'm not Squarepusher, people just think I'm nutty.

  • I want his Reaktor ensembles.

  • What album was he making when he did this interview?

  • why was there a fucking octopus tentatively resting its tenticles on Toms head for the best part of the interview?

  • @ihatelumberjacks Because Tech TV has retarded video editors.

  • if anyone could tell me what the names of the sequencers in 1:49 i'd be truly thankful :)

  • He can't talk shit about Roger Taylor like that!

On second thought... he's the one man who can. Besides philly.

  • 0:51 ! WOAW IT'S VERY NICE SONG ! thx

  • @pebeau 'I Wish You Could Talk' on 'Go Plastic'

  • Does anyone know what that thing with the sliders at 1:55 is?

  • It's a Peavey PC-1600. A very old (circa mid '90's) MIDI fader box.

  • thanks mate

  • Watching this makes me want to blast Go Plastic. Hell of an album.

Of course Tom's decided to go more organic and live-instrumentation these days, which I'm also cool with.

  • that's just what happens when you get old....

  • It's great seing someone do exactly what they feel/want to do. He mentions here he's getting bored of live instruments, yet now he's back hammering away on his bass. Awesome.

I play various instruments, but would give anything to have the knowledge he has of recording.

  • I like that he like says "like" alot.

  • Comment removed

  • TechTV was so much better than the endless commercial that is now called G4

  • Digital hands on 'im @ 2:15

  • i think he said "like" about 100 times

  • he can do it, he's squarepusher

  • fuckin legend

  • Squarepusher and Plaid live? Damn, I wouldn't mind having been there...

  • I was there, and Plaid was a very 'accessible' live set, while []-> was avant garde. Par for the course on those two artists I guess. Still a phenom show.

  • Still, that's a great lineup... As abstract as Jenkinson's set might've been, I've never heard him do a bad live performance.

  • respect

  • Awesome! Never seen this interview!

  • say like enough?

  • at 1:22 you can see that he's using Reaktor

  • Good for him! I'm not sure if you'd agree but I've noticed it to be more powerful than Max/MSP, or at least more accessible.

    Nowadays, that is.

  • hes playing in my country soon.. hell yeah

  • he was playing at a poncinema in my town last friday

  • i came back from SQ Live few minutes ago.. i got pictures, and some vid, but its from photo camera so quality sux. Songs from Just A Souvenir took most of the show time, he played too: Anstromm-Feck 4, Hello Meow, Come On My Selector.. He is amazing, he played on the bass like crazy, he had 7 or 8 pedal controlers, stepping on it in lightspeed.

  • cool could you send it to me??

  • yeah, pw me your mail

  • I love that he is in the Phoenix Hotel courtyard

  • wuts the song at 1:17?

  • thanks pl at youtube lol. i found the song,"my red hot car" .

  • Very interesting. I like the way he talks about making traditional instruments sound completely different or even interchange their usual roles to create something special. Good analogy about Jimmy Hendrix as well.

  • Thanks for posting this! One of the interviews that actually touches on the gear he uses and the thought processes behind his composing approach.

What he said about making instruments switch roles is such a perfect description of what he does. I've often thought that too, so it's cool to hear it in his words.

  • Indeed TechTV used to show some interesting stuff. Unfortunately back then I was barely 11 :/ G4 followed in MTV's footsteps.

  • BOO KCHH BOOKCHH

  • The guy in the shop with the disgusting queen rock beats. haha.

  • yeh tech tv was amazing back in the day:) it became g4 and it all went downhill

  • Wow. This is a pretty good interview. Looks like Tech TV was a cool station back in the day. Is it just me, or has it gotten really watered down lately?

  • thanks buddy!

  • wht track is tht in the background on 1.16 - 1.42....thnX and wher can i get it?

  • I think that's a section of "My Red Hot Car."

You can probably get it off iTunes.

  • go plastic is the best

  • You know, after reading this comment, I checked out the album for myself and I couldn't agree more. "The Exploding Psychology" is now my favorite song by him.

  • You should also look after "hard normal daddy", a more jazz/experimental oriented album, but still awesome. Especially Beep Street. :-)

  • Good call man. I checked the album out and I have to admit, Beep Street is really cool track. But personally Anirog D9 is my current favorite.

  • Yes that track is awesome too, sounds quite like the Girl/Boy Song on Richard D James Album from Aphex Twin.

  • I know. That song is great. I wish it was longer, though.

  • I'm into Tomorrow World and Freeway (too bad it's so short...) right now.

So much of his stuff is great, though.

  • He's overusing the word like... :D

So I made two response videos, one where only words like "like" etc, and the other one where these words are silented out.

  • hadrienboye ...Its timestretching with some filtering

  • It's interesting to see how his setup in 2001 varies from his setup in 1996. He, like many other artists, seemes to have moved to computer-based electronic creation.

  • i do really wonder how does he process the drums hits to render the "prrrtrttrtrtrrrtrt...." sound effect ? i haven't found any software which can render this in real time... does anybody have a clue ?

  • possibly reaktor. he's been using that live, apparently.

  • It might as well be a LFO-triggered drum. By increasing the LFO rate the frequency rises. I have tried that with Propellerhead Reason. There are some tutorials out there, search for 'granular synthesis'.

  • i have a feeling that the reaktor shot and the home studio shot were this program's own footage pasted on top, you'd know what i mean like?

  • It might as well be a LFO-triggered drum. By increasing the LFO rate the frequency rises. I have tried that with Propellerhead Reason. There are some tutorials out there, search for 'granular synthesis'.

  • Reason kind of sucks, though. Except for Thor, Dr. Rex, and an easy as hell sequencing interface, it's kind of bleh. It's impossible routing it with other programs a lot of the time because there's some bizarre I'm-always-too-compressed glitch in the mixers and even the rewire interface. What part of the LFO is triggering the drums in your example? I'm not I understand why you'd use an LFO over any other oscillator.

  • This tutorial points out the way i was using a LFO to trigger a sample -> watch?v=m1GElnwAXn8

And here you see that technique applicated -> watch?v=VAw7nsslmqs

  • At that time, he was using an Eventide Orville (verrrry pricey then) through Reaktor. Now, don't think you'll just buy one, plug it in and become the new Squarepusher. Both of these require some serious knowledge in sound programming to give their full potential. :)

  • crazy ass bassist

  • yeah, all of the program that used is Reaktor.

  • The real question here is what program is he using at 1:24? (I don't know if its th same as 1:21's Reaktor)

  • cooledit/adobe audition

  • How is it that Tom Jenkinson is such a genius? Can anyone explain how a guy like him can obtain the discipline to play guitar, bass, keys, drums (both jazz acoustic and digital) and samplers and yet not get tangled within his wide vocabulary of musical tricks?

  • i should block you

  • Whoa! I was asking the question with respect to the fact that Tom Jenkinson is one of the most brilliant minds today in the electronic scene! It impresses me that he can have so many wonderful musical talents to juggle! Don't take my comment to be so harsh man!

  • lol joking

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! When then for that matter...tee-he! Anyway Squarepusher rules! "Ultravisitor" is one the most extrodinary albums ever made!

  • @jdoget07 Some people got it. Mere musicians like I ask "what can this new toy do?", Jenkins seems to go "How do I BREAK this thing and make it sounds awsome in the process". Pure genius.

  • @duckmonsterX Yeah, I know what you mean. Autechre have that same attitude towards their musical instruments as well. Both artists blow my mind.

BTW, I'm amazing to find someone responding to comments that I've posted 3 YEARS AGO. Boy, I love being popular :)

  • this ain't his studio, this is just illustration stuff.

  • the program at 1:21 is Reaktor, from Native Instrumens

I love Squarepusher, great bass player and musician!

  • Does anyone know what computer program he is using at the 1:21 mark in this vid? It looks sorta similar to something like Reason but its hard to tell what it actually is.

  • does anyone know the name of that little black device with the faders is called? at 1:57

  • It's a Peavy PC1600x controller

  • makes me proud to be british

  • hendrix has got nothin on the squarepushahhhh!

  • like the hendrix reference

  • wow! thank you!

  • 'I just want everything to be digital and brutal'. He's kinda gone back on his word with Ultravisitor and Hello everything.

  • go plastic is digital and brutal. ultravisitor and hello everything are seperate.

  • @rudizyg yeah this interview is from the go plastic era :)

  • Check out the granular synthisis impression

  • Tom is the man!

  • finally a decent interview video, thanks

  • wow.. great post.. thanks! He is truly amazing.

  • He seems so much more mature from his earlier interviews in 96. Squarepushahhhh with all the different style of drum and bass.

  • Squarepusher is nothing short of a genius.

  • this guy rocks :D

  • vvvvtttt

  • This will definitely boost Dr660s sales.

  • Dear Roland Corporation U.S.
