I love the way that the editing to this video creatively referenced the disjointed nature of the music itself, by making a seamless visual representation of the style. Cool beans. :p
It's great seing someone do exactly what they feel/want to do. He mentions here he's getting bored of live instruments, yet now he's back hammering away on his bass. Awesome.
I play various instruments, but would give anything to have the knowledge he has of recording.
I was there, and Plaid was a very 'accessible' live set, while []-> was avant garde. Par for the course on those two artists I guess. Still a phenom show.
i came back from SQ Live few minutes ago.. i got pictures, and some vid, but its from photo camera so quality sux. Songs from Just A Souvenir took most of the show time, he played too: Anstromm-Feck 4, Hello Meow, Come On My Selector.. He is amazing, he played on the bass like crazy, he had 7 or 8 pedal controlers, stepping on it in lightspeed.
Very interesting. I like the way he talks about making traditional instruments sound completely different or even interchange their usual roles to create something special. Good analogy about Jimmy Hendrix as well.
Thanks for posting this! One of the interviews that actually touches on the gear he uses and the thought processes behind his composing approach.
What he said about making instruments switch roles is such a perfect description of what he does. I've often thought that too, so it's cool to hear it in his words.
Wow. This is a pretty good interview. Looks like Tech TV was a cool station back in the day. Is it just me, or has it gotten really watered down lately?
You know, after reading this comment, I checked out the album for myself and I couldn't agree more. "The Exploding Psychology" is now my favorite song by him.
It's interesting to see how his setup in 2001 varies from his setup in 1996. He, like many other artists, seemes to have moved to computer-based electronic creation.
i do really wonder how does he process the drums hits to render the "prrrtrttrtrtrrrtrt...." sound effect ? i haven't found any software which can render this in real time... does anybody have a clue ?
It might as well be a LFO-triggered drum. By increasing the LFO rate the frequency rises. I have tried that with Propellerhead Reason. There are some tutorials out there, search for 'granular synthesis'.
It might as well be a LFO-triggered drum. By increasing the LFO rate the frequency rises. I have tried that with Propellerhead Reason. There are some tutorials out there, search for 'granular synthesis'.
Reason kind of sucks, though. Except for Thor, Dr. Rex, and an easy as hell sequencing interface, it's kind of bleh. It's impossible routing it with other programs a lot of the time because there's some bizarre I'm-always-too-compressed glitch in the mixers and even the rewire interface. What part of the LFO is triggering the drums in your example? I'm not I understand why you'd use an LFO over any other oscillator.
At that time, he was using an Eventide Orville (verrrry pricey then) through Reaktor. Now, don't think you'll just buy one, plug it in and become the new Squarepusher. Both of these require some serious knowledge in sound programming to give their full potential. :)
How is it that Tom Jenkinson is such a genius? Can anyone explain how a guy like him can obtain the discipline to play guitar, bass, keys, drums (both jazz acoustic and digital) and samplers and yet not get tangled within his wide vocabulary of musical tricks?
Whoa! I was asking the question with respect to the fact that Tom Jenkinson is one of the most brilliant minds today in the electronic scene! It impresses me that he can have so many wonderful musical talents to juggle! Don't take my comment to be so harsh man!
@jdoget07 Some people got it. Mere musicians like I ask "what can this new toy do?", Jenkins seems to go "How do I BREAK this thing and make it sounds awsome in the process". Pure genius.
Does anyone know what computer program he is using at the 1:21 mark in this vid? It looks sorta similar to something like Reason but its hard to tell what it actually is.
