Three top-level guitar players, what we could ask more? De Lucia has a great soul and fantastique flamenco technique, McLaughlin can play everything with his classy touch and Al Di Meola has the most incredible picking technique on earth!!
A lot of Metal players who shill for the alternate-picking skills of Paul Gilbert, Malmsteen, Batio, et.al, don't realize that the picking patterns those dudes are playing was shit Di Meola did 40 yrs ago, and on acoustic!! I mean damn, who do you think inspired those dudes to play like that in the first place?!? It's amazing how Malmsteen never credits Al Di Meola as one of his influences on various interviews. Instead, he wastes his energy bashing Hendrix - pleeeeaze.
All I have to say is I might be able to pull off the shit Al or John are doing, but I can't even approach the level of fingerpicking Paco de Lucia is at.
@Daim0th That is flamenco tecnich. If you can do the others, just have to learn the flamenco fingering tecnich... Easy to say, but not impossible to do if you can do the others...
All three being professional bests, Al Di Meola played out better. They do not compete. One night the magic is there, the other it is not. Paco is new to me and I am studying him now. John has been known on electric so much more with Carlos Santana and their spiritual/soulful struts in the orchestra....Utah.
... well.. i was thinking little more about and there is possibility that those 8 could be purists and don't like metal string guitars ..which i understand ; .i prefer myself classic sound with nylon strings .
but completely dislike ??!! ... i still don't understand ??
i think those 8 who dislike did it as joke or is mistake ..is beyond my imagination for anybody ..even those who is not music expert to dislike that masterpieces .
even mediocrity brains beside good or bad taste must feel pleasure from that sound ...is natural . hmmmm.
tottaly I agree paco is awesome I mean he's shredding and keeping up with al di and he's useing a pick simply amazing, but I'am still a bigger fan of al di meola cause of his use of electric guitar. 5 stars!!!!!!!!
They all play different styles just for the record. And actually Paco De Lucia is not a jazz player.
So please in all fairness. Paco De Lucia has one approach which is a flamenco based. If you really know the other two players music well enough, you would see that Di Meola and McLaughlin are all over the guitar in terms of mastery.
Paco de Lucia is a master at flamenco. John Mclauglin and Al Di Meola pioneered fusion guitar amongst other styles.
@mardebcin "And actually Paco De Lucia is not a jazz player."
It's perplexing how people can't make that simple distinction.
" If you really know the other two players music well enough, you would see that Di Meola and McLaughlin are all over the guitar in terms of mastery."
It's undeniable that Flamenco is the most difficult technically, but Jazz or Fusion Jazz is more complex harmonically - even by Paco's own testimony.
@mardebcin - The list of Paco’s achievements is unparalleled and his contribution to the flamenco guitar is unrivaled. Paco is a musical genius (with jazz influence later in life) who changed the course of flamenco and is worshipped by thousands of guitarists in every corner of the globe. I can also mention about his technique, how he has – totally dominated – guitar from every aspect and incorporated jazz into his phenomenal playing and compositions, but I think I’ve made my point…
I had the privelege of seeing the concert (that included Steve Morse) in the late 70's. I didn't know who Steve Morse was at the time....but, he blew them all away!
@natito79 I have to disagree with you. All three of these guitarists have reached the 7th level of guitardom. To say that one is better than the other is asinine. You merely prefere Paco over the others. Nothing more.
@MalcomYoungJr : No it is not!^^ lol If you have no experience with playing Guitar try it in front of your pc. you can tap with your feet at every full every half and so on note... So its not obvious and i think it just looks funny cause they did not intend to do it for how it looks. Greeetz
@jstiegelmar Bull Crap. John Mcloughlin is more than Paco's equal. Paco only plays spanish style. McLoughlin can equal him at that and play many, many other styles at the highest lvel of proficiency.
the last 2 min sucks... turns to a mess... zillion solo once <.< thats not music , beside why the 2 spanish guitars picking the strings that tough it sounds like buzzed , i know that the style meant to be like this.. but i think its no clean sound :/
Beautiful performance. of course as these are three of the greatest guitarists the world has thus far produced, but the video and audio are out of sync and it makes it hard to watch... still great to listen though.
I think John is too fast (at the moment of his first solo), compared to the general tempo. A little bit too fast... But it don't diminish the quality of the music.
That's very beautifull, a great idea to mix classical guitars and a folk.
Just when you think it couldn't get any better, three gifted men return to mesmerize the masses. How fortunate is that? Someday maybe they could add a few other gifted players on the stage to play along with them; like Larry Coryell, Pat Methany, and Alexandre Lagoya. Or even the California Guitar Trio. This is greatness!
This is nice, sorry to all fans i have another opinion (my opinion) lestening to simple music sometimes like green day or greenleaves with acoustic guitars have stronger deep feeling to my heart and my soul, much better than taking skills to the limit to show the others how skillful we are, i used to play green day and i like my own playing much more than this treeetrreertrerere.
Well that's good you're easy to please I guess =/ I wonder though if you think that these players here are not "feeling" the music and pouring their soul into the notes that they create? Because if so you're just plain wrong. This may be a very skill-displaying song but these guys are improvising solos by what they feel at that exact second and I think it's beautiful. On the contrary I have 8 year old guitar students that play Green Day songs with ease..?? As long as it makes you happy I guess

John's solos are beautifully phrased and they give you warm feeling. Same goes with Paco. That guy with glasses have much to learn from those guys. Besides his guitar sounds irritating. :D
Someone mentioed that it seems as Al is competing with Paco. I have to agree. And I also think John is way better than Al, just that john is a little too jazzy for my taste.
