You know what? I won't go into the merits of this particular production. The bitching and complaining about color blind casting and the voices of the gals. MEH!
I am just pleased that we have a visual record of the finale that was cut from the film.Or should I say reworked? Don't get me wrong. I just LOVED the film and think that the way the finale was treated in the film was BRILLIANT! But here we have the ORIGINAL stage version and we can judge the differences. Yes?
Forget about the color of the skin. I would like to know how come Effie is as thin as the other girls? Did they cut out the scene that lead up to 'And I Am Telling You?" And for people who claim to be a part of the theater ALL OF THEIR LIFE, should know, that the best is not always selected. Show business is a business, for the most part, of who you know not what you know or who talented you are. And I know that for a fact.
The only problem is that the musical, and the book it was based on is a testament of the black experience in the music world. Whether the singing and acting is good or not context from the time period just don't match up. It is like producing producing Gershwin's Porgy and Bess with a white cast. The opera was meant for a black cast that every audience could see. I think that is the same with this musical. The only difference is that Gershwin's will restricts P&B to an all black cast.
exactly!! I have been a part of theater productions ALL MY LIFE! I know what good acting is as well as good singing and I feel that in this instance, they did a great job despite their skin color because I'm SURE there was a black young lady that auditioned but she was clearly not good enough vocally to get casted for the part
thank you. they did do a good job. at the school they do do color blind casting. who ever can sing it and act it better gets the role. yes race is crucial to the play but it was a high school performance. weve had a black sandy from grease, a black dolly etc. it doesnt matter. its high school and they all did a damn well job. the girl playing deena is in the running to portray diana ross in a movie!!!!
u clearly dont understand the fundamentals of theatre... its all about fitting the character to make it believable.. yes she has a great voice, but dreamgirls also explore racial tensions in society at the time portrayed. havving Effie white is just as illogical as having Deena bigger than effie or even a black amber von tussle :|.. ome on pick sense out of nonesense :|:|
fair enough... understandable. that is alot different from saying her race shouldnt matter all that was important was her voice... however i feel they should've used some makeup to make her look a bit more african... there were racial tensions after all.... then again that all depends on budget as well...
That wouldn't have been a good idea. If they had made her up to look black, even a little, it would have been basically viewed as "blackface" and that would have caused so many different social issues.
omg you are soooooo blind lol. only two of the dreams are white, everyone else in the cast is black, white, latino etc. its a mixed cast...its a high school production....all the main male characters are black, except 2 of the dreams who are white, get over it, its a high school production
Effie is suppose to a plus woman. This is what the character description is and has always been. I works with the change but if it was on Broadway it would be so very odd she can sing but Deanna was put in front because she was younger and applied to a younger crowed. Effie was put in the back because her voice was to strong and she wasn't young like Deanna.
There's this constant misconception that Effie is supposed to be big. There's literally one line in the entire play that suggests that she was "big" and that was because she was pregnant. On top of this people tend to think the character is supposed to be "big" because Jennifer Holliday had been gaining weight at the time she was performing as Effie. The truth is Effie was put behind Deena because of her voice and the fact that Deena was pretty. That's it.
Have you seen any of the original play clips or read up on the original version. Effie was always meant to be big and in the first draft she was supposed to kill herself or OD like one of the Supremes did in real life. Check it out on Wiki...hope it helps.
Well, let me switch that up a bit...I believe she was supposed to big, but in my honest personal opinion, I think as long as whoever is playing Effie has something visibly "different" about them (Height, weight, race, etc.) then it can still fit in the context of the show.
For those of you who are "bothered" by the mixed casting, newsflash... WHO CARES, you FUCKBAGS! The mixed cast for CINDERELLA (Whitney/Brandy version) was fanfuckingtastic. Coffee is always better with cream, and chocolate chip cookies are better than plain sugar cookies. P.S. For those who are DREAMGIRLS fans and want a laugh-fest, go look at "DREAMGIRLS THE MISSING SCENE" on here... P.P.S. I wish they WOULD do a GREASE re-make with a multi-cultural cast.
They did a good job. But, I'm sorry, they should have found a big girl to play Effie White. After all her man didn't want her because she wasn't fine as the other girl.
i dont mind the colour of the cast.. but what happen to effie, isnt she supposed to be a little plum. that is the reason she was put behind deena. right? this white effie is too hot to be the real effieXD
Forget the black/white issue. Why is Effie skinny in this play! Wow, you guys got it all wrong. If you gonna do the play. Try to be a little accurate.
The black issue doesn't bother me as long as it goes both ways..like if they do Grease a black guy can be Danny Zucko for example or a Latina can be Sandy. If that's the case then its cool..but regardless this is really good, especially for a high school. You guys should be proud, and the girl who played Effie was amazing.
It's called a colorblind cast. Now if you eanted to play a part in school play and someone didn't want you to play the part because you were black, then it would be a different story. Don't be so hypocritical.
i understand the color blind casting in high school. it makes sense. and this effie is the AMAZING! i can't wait to watch her and i'm telling you. deena's voice is a little nasally for me...and my only real problem with effie was the riff on "and this time effie white's gonna win"...she just rushed that section for me. a little more time with it. it would have been perfection.
If they were in high school.....WOW! it was great man. forget the white black thing. only people who really need to be blak are Jimmy and curtis in my opinion to fit the story line,,,,
Yeah, Effie's white (haha Effie White, lol, sorry, it's slightly amusing), but especially considering that, she still matches the part vocally. And this is really from a high school production? Because if it is then damn, my high school sure never had good singers like this, let alone enough to do a show like "Dreamgirls."
Can you guys stop it... It's clear that it's a high school production which means that it's automatically color clind casting. On top of that, it's obvious that Deena is black as well as Curtis and Michelle.
ummm...these girls are singing well but isn't the whole point of the play about how BLACKS are trying to make it in a WHITE industry...so where are the blacks?
I had never heard that first song before, the one Deena and Effie are singing, because it wasn't in the film so it was nice to hear it! Thanks for another great video! xXx

It's a high school production. Like most High school productions of anything, they most likely did color-blind casting.
