Its fast on the 3G network but if its just being used on EDGE it might take a bit longer for the videos to load

Well EDGE is what you are using unless you have a 3G phone and are in a 3g area, 3G is very fast when it comes to loading videos, webpages, and sending messages (it runs circles around EDGE) but some cell phone companies will charge you more for a 3G phone and its plan.

Yes you can, the only way to activate your phone, outside of in-store activation, is to plug it in to your pc and register it via online. Then once registered it will function as any apple ipod would connected to itunes.

the initial start up on the phone requires that you register your gmail account. that information is transmitted via internet.

so, from the beginning, you need a data plan. after that, you can use ur wifi, but make sure you completely turn off the 3G and EDGE, otherwise when your wifi gets disconnected, you'll be on the 3G/EDGE network, and will be billed for each byte you transfer (EXPENSIVE WITHOUT A DATA PLAN)

pretty much, if u get this phone, you'll need a data plan... cheap also 25 bucks!

as i stated in the other post, the initial boot you have with the G1 will require you to submit your information pertaining to your Gmail account. at THIS menu, you have no option on transfering over to WiFi. Infact, the default location that the G1 searches from is the 3G/EDGE network.

as for your situation, i recommend you signup as a developer (and prove yourself a developer) to get an unlocked G1 (unless you can get some other way).

you can use the G1 with wifi, that is correct.

unlocked simply means that you are not bound to a single service provider (in this case, tmobile)

however, when you do want to start using the phone, you'll have to have a plan for your data access under some service provider (most likely will only run on ATT if you want CLOSE to 3g speeds)

Verizon and sprint do not use 3G so you cannot carry it over to them.

oh, so the buttom line is that if i bring the thing (obviusly unlocked) to mexico or other country it will work, thers no T mobile where i live (maybe AT&t im not sure), i only need to make calls and the wi-fi, maybe 3g in da future but right now is not really important to me cuz most of the time im close to a hotspot at work or skool

then i'd say go for it. you may slightly be charged for some data (the initial steps of registering your account) but after that, you can disable 3G/2G to connect and stick with WiFi solely.

i think you do need the data plan if you are new T-Mobile but if your not gonna use the internet than i suggest you lay this one of becuase the whole system is based on Google which we all know is based on the internet i suggest you should get samsung behold or some other phone becauase u need internet to get the most outta this phone

the g1 isnt as good as the iphone i think. the design really sucks. not just the design of the phone itsself, but that of the software called "adroid" as well. and the touchscreen, especially the scrolling thing is really apple like (but they didn't get that multitouch feature quite right) as well as the "adroid market" (app store). well, everyone tries to copy apple's products. and i think this phone doesn't have the simplicity the iphone has.

i agree scrolling is laggy, but they didn't try to copy apple's multi touch. I know because android HAS NO multi touch. Plus the android market isn't a rip off of app store, it's the whole basis of the OS. The OS is open source and meant to be added upon by third party developers to come into a fully complete program. Most of the programs on it are free. The market place is just a convenient way of downloading add ons straight to your phone. The apps store is more like gamestop on the go.
