  • @qwert371 yes very true used to have a girllfriend who was a rock climber only trouble was she was always using that powder for a better grip .so would have to wash my knob afterwards

  • Lifting weights will only make you stronger. You get bigger by consuming more calories. If you don't want to get big, just don't eat that much. To say weightlifting is useless or will make you bulky is ignorant.

  • @rayachheuy Lifting wights will give you a bad power/wieght ratio. And by weightlifting he ment lifting very heavy weight like the bodybuilder and as you probably know having a lot of muscles isn't good for climbing.

  • @coolman784 Lifting weights does not mean a bad power/weight ratio. You can lift heavy weights and not be big/heavy as long as you don't consume a lot of calories. Muscles don't get big from lifting, they get big from eating. Plus, genetically, most bodies aren't capable of gaining serious mass without supplements. Not to say you won't gain muscle mass if you lift, but you definitely won't get bulky/heavy.

  • @rayachheuy Yeah, I've seen some body builder type guys in the climbing gym tear it up. Maybe as far as endurance or flexibility is concerned a smaller build would be more condusive to climbing.

  • Im 13 and i have been in boulder climbing for 2 months and now i aint scared to fall and i can also go about 2 hours now nonstop climbing but when i started i couldnt go for 30 min without rest so all this is great and you will get strong really fast you are working on a muscle you've never done before in other sports so go check it out :D

  • the best climber I know looks likes he's never been in a weightlifting gym, just a skinny guy basically. I wouldn't say adding muscle to lats, bis, forearms, etc. is necessarily *bad*, but I definitely think the best muscle training for bouldering is bouldering. This is true of practically anything.

  • @rsholt45 strength training for climbers includes lifting weight of your own body... while climbing. Climbers mucles are way more effective than weightlifter ones. For strength you do short hard routes, and for endurance long easier (but not too easy) ones.

  • Well, he says "the main way to train for competition is to focus on strength at first". Then his next sentence is "Most people go weight lifting or what not which is completely useless, muscle is heavier than fat so it's the worst thing you could have". Weight lifting is ONE way to get stronger, and you CAN train the muscles used for bouldering. And plus, based on his last sentence, would it be better to be fat? NO YOU DUMB DUMB.

  • @rsholt45 the idea is that you do climbing movements, so you can easly pull up your own body very quickly over and over, getting your smaller, but dense powerfull muscles.

    weights give you big heavy, overkill.

    its all about balance.

  • I hate how lots of people like this last guy on the video like to say that muscles are not good for climbing.

    WTF? Of course it is good to be a lightweight, but with muscles. Muscles help a lot. Of course its not good to weight like 200 pounds, even if you have a muscular body, if you want to climb. But you dont need to be a skinny guy. You can be strong looking and still climb very, very hard. Bouldering is all about strength and technique.

  • @flakened He never said muscles are not good for climbing. He said that the muscle development you get from weightlifting in a gym will not be good for climbing and he is 100% correct.

    The muscles you traditionally focus on when you weight train (biceps, pectoralis major/minor etc) are not really used in climbing. So if you train those up, you get big (and heavy) but they won't help you at all. Also, grip strength is not something you get from weight lifting.

  • im 6'5 225 lbs play offensive line and climb the shit out of the rocks at red river gorge. lifting weights has definitely helped my climbing, but the best way to get better is definitely just climb

    Sure muscle is heavier and will make you heavier, but you gain strength disproportionately to weight, eg you will be heavier, but you will still find it easier to climb due to the strength gained.

    Sure mr Olympia might have a big of trouble climbing, but the average weight lifter isn't.

    Lifting weights will make you stronger, in order to become a better climber the most effective method is more climbing or training specific to climbing. Going to the weight gym 5 days a week is pointless for someone who wants to be a climber.

    a weight lifter is going to have trouble doing long climbing and yes working with weights for climbing isn't known in the pro area or bouldering climbing
