RAMBLIN' ROSE (LP) ★★★ This is the importance of a hit single when it carries le album. It went up to #3 where it stayed four weeks (I don't know if in a row). It remained 162 weeks in the album charts and was certified platinum. But come to hear and think about it, many of preceeding albums by Nat were far better than this one, but never became bestsellers.
@ENACODNOM Yes, the album had a "country flavor", and the reason why can be traced to the enormous success Ray Charles had earlier had with his "Modern Sounds in Country and Western". Not that Nat tried to copy it, but what Ray did with that certainly got his attention and influenced his song choices.
@Nocaro Yes, I remember Ray Charles had several country hits, the biggest one being, of course, his version of Don Gibson's I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU. My favorite version for that is Roy Orbison's. Besides, I'm not as keen for Ray as you appear to be. But I do respect him as a composer/songwriter.
@nocaro thanks for the info.i hope i was close.two great nat king cole songs were ''i don't want to be hurt anymore'' and ''i don't want to see tomorrow''.if you have them can you post them? they have similar totles.another great song by dean martin called ''you're nobody till somebody loves you'' from 1965,the hit version.the earlier version by dino has posted several times.can you post it? thank you.
@slr1238 I'll see what I can do about posting those songs over the next few weeks although the Dean Martin song may have some copyright issues that may prevent it from being posted.
''ramblin' rose'' was #2.what was #1, ''roses are red'' by bobby vinton? that would be strange, two rose songs.#1 could have been ''johnny angel'' by shelley fabares or ''duke of earl'' by gene chandler or ''good luck charm'' by elvis. does anybody know?
@rainer1980 Actually you can thank Ray Charles and the enormous success he had with an album entitled "Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music" which produced such hits as "Born To Lose" and "I Can't Stop Loving You" for Nat attempting a recording like "Ramblin' Rose".
i have heard this song sung all my life...but i wonder who really was Ramblin' Rose?? i have often throught about this as i sang this song to myself...and what i came up with is...a very playful beautiful carefree heart breaker type of a woman..one who you have to love and expect not to receive too much of that love back...a woman that Nat...calls wild as the wind blows...who can cling too...and he wants her to Rambln on...and wonders who will love this woman..when she is not young and crazy???
@binstence , I have to agree with you 100%. Everywhere I go people are so selfish and they really do not seem to even realize it. Perfect example is Hollywood. At one time all the entertainers were so very differant and cool. Now a days, most of these people are just plain nuts !! So Sad
@binstence , I agree with you. I wish I really knew what happen to this country. I know when my parents were kids back in the 40s and 50's Everyone was closer, weather it be family, friends
or neighbors. People were more religious back than. Now its all such a mess.
I was an 8 year old boy just transplanted from the canadian prairies to a ranch on a plateau above Merritt, B.C. This song always takes me to that idyllic summer. It was my father's favorite, I played it for him on the piano. Thank you.

@ENACODNOM By this time in his career Nat had turned to pop in order to sell records and this was one of his most successful efforts.

@Nocaro It's Pop for a couple of songs allright, but the album is mostly Country, don't you think so?

@slr1238 Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" was the #1 song in the nation the week (Aug. 18, 1962) that "Ramblin' Rose" was #2.

It was really more of a late summer/early fall hit, beginning its 16-week run on Billboard's Hot 100 the first week of August, 1962.

Was Nat King Cole trying to see if he could do Country Music when he sang this? If so, he does a pretty good job.

♫ Ramblin' rose, ramblin' rose
Why you ramble, no one knows
Wild and wind-blown, that's how you've grown
Who can cling to a ramblin' rose...♫
