My Aunt & Uncle was visiting us from San Antino,Tx.,They were both killed in this tornado. My Dad died 2 yrs. later from injuries substained from the tornado.
@AJTwister97: " also, i dont think i recall an F5 swirling cloud of doom on the northern most tip of the west coast, where its average high is like 60 degrees"
Probably pretty rare up there, but believe it or not, there was an F3 that hit not too far from Seattle..........in DEC. of '69.
The funny thing is, though Mom was almost caught by both of Wichita Falls' most famous tornadoes, we didn't live there. We lived about 20 miles west of there at a little farming community called Valley View. After I finally, after hours of dialing, got hold of Mom and Dad after the 79' tornado I told her, " Mom, I don't know what tornadoes have against you, but you could have left the rest of us out of it". She was not amused. lmao.
My Mom, me, my brother, and two sisters were parked at Cecil's Drive In getting hamburgers near the Seymour Hwy. when this thing came through. The carhop had just put our tray on the window when my brother said, "Mom, that's a tornado?". Mom took a look, threw the tray full of food on the ground, backed out, and hit the gas. It was coming right up the highway at us. Mom was crying...and driving over 100 mph in our old 52 Dodge. Tornado didn't have a chance against that V8 Red Ram engine.
@Rikki0 Then 15 years later, Mom and Dad were on the way to their Tuesday night bowling league at Village Bowl in Wichita Falls. They were on SW Parkway Blvd. When the 1979 tornado came up SW Parkway. This time Dad was driving ( I was married and living in Beaumont ) and once again Mom was in a race. Dad managed to cut across to the Henrietta Hwy and get out of the way. He said Mom was crying and yelling "FASTER" the whole time. He should have let her drive. She had experience, heh.
Thanks for the video. Do you, or does anyone, know why the 1979 Wichita Falls tornado (terrible Tuesday) wasn't rated an F5? It did 20 times the damage of this tornado and killed about 40 more people, and left 20,000 homeless...is it just the windspeed was lower?
I was in both the 64 and 79 tornado's, I was under a bridge with my mother and sister approx. 1 mile north of city view elementary school across from Preston store the tornado destroyed the store and nearly killed us. This is the 64 Wichita falls tornado, this neighborhood is sunset terrace.
I always found it ironic that although the 1979 Wichita Falls tornado was larger, deadlier, and more destructive, the 1964 tornado was the stronger of the two.
The 1979 tornado was an F4. The 1964 tornado was an F5.
Also going to jump on the pile of it being the 1964 Wichita Falls, TX tornado. I have a poster of it back at home and it has identical funnel shape and debris cloud structure.
MeanGene79: I didn't know that the Scottsbluff tornado was shot in color. Was it unusual back in the mid-50's for the average guy-next-door to be shooting with a color camera? Wasn't the camera itself, along with accessories like film, bulbs, etc. etc. quite a bit more expensive...almost prohibitive in cost compared to the normal black-and-white?
I also can assure you that the Scottsbluff tornado was shot in color. All that meant was that the photographer reached a little deeper into his pocket to buy color film.
@cbehr91 your right , my parents had a bell and howell 8mm movie camera, projector, and screen that all their fikms are color even when i was 1 year old . i was born in 1955. my grandmoyher lived in witchta falls during both of those tornados and we were on our way to her house from denton texas, when the first one hit . it was horrific when we arrived an hour later
@naderchaser Unusual for the average guy to have a colour camera? Definitely. But not impossible. I've seen home movies of my father's from the 50s and they are in colour (and his parents were of average income). Certainly not 'almost prohibitive' in cost compared to B&W.
@MeanGene79: I'm 55, and both my folks have passed on...my mom just two years ago. Being the only sibling left in Tucson, I had the fun job of cleaning out the folks' house. I happened to find the ORIGINAL MOVIE CAMERA that shot my bare behind as an infant, PLUS the projector, the folding movie screen and all the footage that was shot since on that old camera. Is that cool, or what!!
Yeah that is the Terrible Tuesday Tornado....I'm from Wichita Falls, Tx and they have that exact film of it in the museum they have there for that...I saw it one time on a field trip in Jr. High
This looks like the Wichita Falls tornado from 4/3/64,I remember seeing this footage along with a b&w live news report in a tornado tape I saw once(TVC 2? maybe)I dunno but that's where I first remember seeing it.
KAUZ-TV Channel 6 had a live shot of the tornado as weathercaster Ted Shaw was on the air with the tornado warning. They happened to have a studio camera outside the studio for a commercial of a local car dealer when the funnel came through and turned on the camera, pointing it to the north from their Seymour Highway studio.

It may be from one of the Tornado Video Classics series of tornado videos that are for sale through the Tornado Project.

Right, that's where I transferred this from. But Tornado Project did not know where this tornado was. They have an idea, but not 100% sure.

This was the tornado that occured on April 3, 1964 from your tornado news real video, but I don't know where this takes place.
