I see the same ad hoc fallacy with christian beliefs. One group denies the importance of a particular tenant, while another insists on its essential nature. This is part of how I arrived at atheism, if you deny aspects ad hoc, you have to go back to first causes to establish your basis for belief. Then I realized there was no "there" there. It was argument by authority. =>FAIL
