  • I agree: some of the fx prior to CG was amazing and more real-looking than what we see today. That Alien Queen looks tons better today than any other CG film. Sadly, with the advent of CG, the way of doing creatures old-school style has been diminished. Which is sad, since Stan Winston and other FX groups like him were really getting to take things to a new height. :(

  • @MrBOPESquad2

So would Lion King. The thing with Avatar is that it's a cartoon. I know a _lot_ of work went into it and blah blah blah...but it still has the feel of a cartoon, for better and worse.

  • @Eldeecue Avatar's problem is in script, not SFX. Understand that Avatar is James Cameron's attempt at Star Wars. It has much of calculated appeal factor, that's why it feels cartoony. Hell, compared to Alien, Aliens is pretty cartoony too.

  • Cgi...BLerh!!!!!!!!

  • the amount of love, care, and attention to the practical effects is much more than what any CGI counterpart will ever achieve.

  • So much better than a lot of the CGI you see. So many lazy ass computer effects that are done. Amazing, that you don't hear more about the fakeness of some of it and people just eat it up.

  • This film said fuck you CGI

  • This guy Rosengrant needs to stop talking at the same time as the other effects guy. You can't make out what either one is saying.

  • face huger= ugliest vag ever

  • Watch Avatar. I would love to see a animatronic do that. I bet you've seen CGI and had no idea that it was CGI because it was GOOD CGI. Of course animatronics and practical effects look better than BAD CGI. I love these classics too. But to say animatronics look more realistic is just plain wrong to say.

  • @walkinginspace I wouldn't say its wrong to say that animatronics look better than CG. Both of them, when used correctly for the right purpose, create an extremely realistic image. Avatar would've been a worse film if it had used costumes, puppets and animatronics instead of CG. Look at a film like Pan's Labyrinth. The fawn in that is a guy in a suit with animatronics controlling his face. You'd agree it does look extremely convincing and the detail that is present is just amazing.

  • @MexicanJumpingLlama Generally I'd agree. There are a number of very well known trilogies that imo only got worse as each new movie was made that relied more and more on Cgi. Star Wars is one of the biggest that stands out in my mind, so many scenes in the last 3 episodes that were so heavily dependant on Cgi to the extreme.. the realistic look and feel of the original movies was lost, it starting becoming more of a spiced up cartoon. The Matrix movies another example.

  • amazing, so much more integrity than cgi

  • with animatronics everything looks realistic...cause it are real things...i think movies like this or jurassic park looks more realistic than modern movies from the last 10 years.

  • 2:35 The chestburster is performing an opera. :)

  • the art of animatronics looks like its becoming a lost art due CGI (which has its uses) but hopefully it NEVER fully replaces the pure genius and majic that is real FX

  • The facehugger scenes in Alien I and II always looked like REAL creatures. The best CGI money can buy can't top it for realism.

  • @YesWeCantaloupe ...for now. You can't call the shit they did in 20s realistic either.

  • whats really cool in the second one is that... they had alll these ideas and James was sooo open to giving the creators of the aliens "free reign". niiice :))

  • 4:23 I knew those where oysters :))

  • Alaskan king crab on steroids!!
