I played this recording to a jazz fan and he guessed it was Lester Young on the sax. The interesting story is that Young heard another member of the band listening to this 78. He heard Trumbauer's solo and bought the recording for himself and took it with him everywhere he went for the next decade. And the influence on Young's playing is obvious.
For those who don't know Bix, just wait til his solo @ 1:00-1:30 gets better - 2:00.... masterful. And he did it differently every time, and not with sheet music. Sheer genius.
Simply amazing! I am new to dixieland, and this composition is an embodiment of everything I love in it! Lush and tasteful arrangement, it has so much in it!
Listening to Bix (which I have been doing for 60 odd years) is like reading a great poem by a great poet. Every timyou read it, you find something new and interesting that you had not seen (or, in this case, heard before). Thanks. alkuhn1
I don't know where the description of the musicians came from, but merely saying Bix was "an American jazz cornetist" is like saying Bing Crosby was just an American singer, or Jimi Hendrix was just an American guitar player, or The Beatles were just a British rock combo.
FredrikTers, thank you so very much for the information and I thank you even more for taking the time to e-mail me on the subject. I hope we can begin a dialogue to examine this very worthy subject because I am very interested in this type of music and it's history.
I noticed that all the starring performers had German names and whenever I listen to Three Penny Opera I am struck by the similarities in tempo, key changes and other dynamics. Gotta do some deep research about this to find out if I am right or imagining it, how and if they cross-pollinated. Should be fascinating however it turns out.
Trumbauer and Beiderbecke certainly had original German names. Eddie Lang however was born Salvatore Massaro, an Italian-american who later took the name "Eddie Lang" after some sport idol I believe.
I agree with Bob - overprocessing has sucked too much of the life out of the recording - check out some other postings to compare. Still, the music pulls the heart right up there despite the electronic ear cotton. Bix Lives
This era of Music was ideal for this combination and they blended well. Trumbaur recorded up until around 1939He retired from music and became a Flight instructor for the War Department (He was also an accomplished Aviator). I have his recording of "Blue Moon" on
Victor from 1935. He was beginning to sound old fashioned by this time when the commercial and swing sound was in fashion. He wa a product of his time after the war he did not perform at all, and continued his career in Aviation.
Bix nails it, again. This time it's with so emotion. I can hear him talking to me throughout the song. Kudos to Tram, also. What a great pair they made.
