You can't really fault Bjorling. Whatever he does, he always does it superbly. But for me, this isn't Bjorling at his best. He is capable of even better. For me, his 'Salut demeure, chaste et pure' is a better example of what he's capable of.
Först kommer Jussi sedan kommer ingen, sedan ingen och därefter möjligtvis Domingo, Pavarotti och Di Stefano. Jussi var i en klass för sig (in a class of his own)!! Tack Jussi. Thanks Jussi!!!
@Thesnuttan52 In this aria - for me - there is Jussi Björling and Enrico Caruso - and then all the others.
The 1904 Caruso recording of this great music/aria is my favorite, but this does not make Jussi's performance less !
Helge!
@Thesnuttan52 Jussi is my home God. With full respect all other singers. The duets with Merill, especial from Don Carlo, take the soul. Samma på alla spräk.
@FabDN41 That is a great performance indeed! Watching him can be somewhat awkward, he was not a gifted actor. He had his flaws, like all singers. For me, the silver tone, vibrato, and elegant phrasing is enough to bring tears. I understand your position, it is a respectable one really. Not everyone loves Bjorling as much as I do. He was a very troubled man, and perhaps that caused his acting to suffer. But when I hear him sing, I hear a deep soul not just another voice. That's why I like him.
@FabDN41 I respect that his voice does nothing for YOU. FOR ME however, he possessed the most unique and beautiful timbre ever recorded. Singing is about what moves YOU. Indeed, this particular aria has been sung more "artistically" by other tenors. But please listen to him singing Adelaide and Ingemisco, and I doubt you will find an equal. To suggest that he is not artistic is a ridiculous claim. Clearly that YOUR opinion. We all have our own opinions. That what makes art great!
I love everything about Jussi Björling. His fantastic voice, his incredible empathy and his great personality. But fpr me personally in this aria the young lyrical Enrico Caruso's recording from 1904 cannot be compared to any other later tenor. If you listen to his recording without fixed ideas or biases, you may agree. Of course, if you have already decided that Jussi or Lanza or Pavarotti or whoever was the gretest tenor ever, you may not even want to listen.....
@FabDN41 You must have a very restricted mind. My interpretation of this is:
"i listening and listening to new tenors but always come back to Björling ore Caruso ore xxxx"
And this is understandable! It goes for me to. I listening to every new tenor poping up and i very often got to opera. We have an international famous outdoor stage here with visiting operahouses from allower the world . Sopranos could be quiite good but not tenors! Comming home i put on Björling to complete the evening.
@FabDN41 Bjoerling sang at an elite level for 30 years. So what if he didn't capture the emotion of the audience in one aria. He has a multitude of songs and arias where he does a damn good job. It's the process, not the product that matter. I'd much rather hear boring healthy singing, than unhealthy "exciting" singing where the singer's kinuerdle is a distraction.
@davecotuit Don´t take any notice of FabDN41. He´s popping up everywhere and criticizing Björling on everything. FabDN41 has no ability to feel the fine tuned nuances in singing. He needs singers who are jumping up and down, waving their armes, sobbing, breathing and wriggle theirs tounges. That´s OK as long as he keeps it for himself and don´t trye to force the rest of us to feel the same. We like SINGING not circus!
@FabDN41 i wouldnt say that. I mean people dont always listen for the nuances of the music sometimes they listen to the sound...just the sound, timbre, and The comment above must like what they hear. DOn't knock them because this is who they choose to listen too. I like many tenors there are three I listen to for technical reasons, Bjoerling, Pav, and Gedda. But when it comes to Beauty...mmm give me some Bjoerling or Wunderlich!
In my opinion, Jussi had that little extra something in his amazing voice that no other tenor ever recorded has equaled to date. However, Caruso had that little extra something in his emotional delivery that no tenor ever recorded has equaled to date.
All these arguments about who's the best tenor of all time are rather myopic in the scope of general opinion. A broader mind may pick a favorite, but won't discount the unique greatness of the many superb tenors whose voices have been recorded.
@texasfntc26: That depends on what you treasure most. If you prefer quality and smoothness in an amazing voice, Jussi can't be beat. If you prefer the heart to command a superior voice far beyond the limits of a music sheet, Caruso was the multi-faceted master in that department and what opera was all about in Puccini's day. Caruso was his tenor, after all. Who knows how much Caruso inspired Puccini?
@FabDN41 Comments like "sometimes he's the only one I want to hear." show an opinion that does not agree with yours...nothing more. This is very beautiful, it is not the only beautiful one though.
This is a great, great performance! Jussi always leaves most other tenors behind.
However, for me the 1904 Caruso version of Una furtiva lagrima cannot be beaten. That recording - even with the primitive technique of the time - gives a whole new dimension to the aria. But then again, all opinion, as it always is with art.
I like Tito Schipa also when he sing this. But I want to buy just this recording. Please valdezalcantara inform me which CD this recording is from. I read that it's with Orchestre de la Scala. And thank you for sharing. It's just stunning, supreme!
Thank you T. Edison for inventing the recording tech. Now we can hear all those voices for ever. And hear Jussi, perhaps standing beside a birch, singing arias with his silver sounding voice. The only man who show that silver can be more worth than gold.
I'm not a big fan of opera and I can't really compare Jussi with any other masters or speak about his skills. The only thing I can say is his singing is touching my heart and it's hard to keep them tears from coming.
@jokxe That is because his voice is *heavy with unshead tears*. Many others feel like you do. Although I count Caruso as even greater, whether you like it or not, you'll get emotional hearing Bjorling. I can't find one of todays singers that affects one like those two giants did.
The suggestion of vocal Enrico Caruso will remain unique forever and for all. He was not a simple tenor or the tenor. It was the "voice" for excellence. Basso, baritono and tenore together. Had everything: power, sweetness, expressiveness, color, technique, style and agility. His voice was a universe of colors and emotions can cover the entire musical range.
I have listened to this aria daily for the last two weeks, and to my surprise I have yet to get bored with the repetition. I can only attribute this to the sheer perfection of every aspect of the singing - in my opinion it is unequalled.
backwards. Head resonance is paramount first then chest adds deapth. A good tone requires both head and chest resonance. It is a constant balance that must be sought after in good singing. One sings longer with a balance. This makes since to me
@ajjle In case you were wondering, this comment was in response to volkerwrieble praising Josef Schmitt - really there is no comparison! Jussi Bjorling is incomparable.
@ajjle I adore Schmidt, but Bjorling along with Caruso is a nonpariel. The natural gift is unquestionable, but what he adds to it with skill, musianship, and sensitivity makes Bjorling unmatched.
@64Alvis That is the best comment on Jussi Björling I have read on this forum!
Obviously Björling´s early training (from age 4!) by his father created immense discipline, ability and understanding. He wasn´t taught to love his voice, he was taught to deliver.
Headtone is everything and nothiing is better then jussis clear and fresh Swedish tone. He is even better singing in Swedish. Check out ...namner du sverige.
chest tone is everything and head tone is added affect. this is not head tone it is chest. high notes are chest position sung through head position or added "cover" to protect the voice from spreading
Im 78 years old and have been listening to operatic tenors for more than 60 years. I try not to be judgmental however when it come to pure visceral reaction, nobody moves me like the sublime sound of maestro Bjorling. Bravo!
Bjorling, Pavarotti, Di Stefano... I can't resist my inclination to lyric tenor. Although I also enjoy listening Coreli and Bergonzi, I don't love them as much. Jussi's voice is so beautiful.

@anders4life No, I don't think so. He may have started as a baritone--I believe he studied with a celebrated baritone. Nevertheless, he's a perfect tenor. His voice is higher than, say, Caruso's.
