  • Robbie wrote most of the songs. He did not have the mega voice of Helms and Manuel or even Danko but give Robertson his due, those songs were epic.

  • its amazing garth plays that lick with one hand on each keyboard. very coordinated and talented man

  • Garth Hudson keyboards solo 1:43 - 2:00. Amazing licks.

  • After the World goes up in flames there's still Garth simply sitting on a porch playing his accordion...

  • Any band would love to have a world class singer like Richard Manuel. Rick Danko or Levon Helm doing its lead vocals. The Band had all three.

  • Man I miss Danko and Manuel.....Levon is hanging there and Robertson is well still Robbie Robertson............been down with The Band since Big Pink and before that when they traveled behind the Great Ronnie Hawkins as the Hawks.this stuff defines my mind

  • You know, I can't speak to all of the internal tensions and differences that The Band had going on about this movie. As far as I'm concerned TLW still, after thirty years, stands as one of the best concert movies ever made. I saw it when I was fourteen without knowing who most of the performers were and was totally blown away. Needless to say, I became a huge fan which had my fiends scratching their heads.

  • I laugh at everyone who says Levon can't play drums and didn't contribute to The Band. I've been playing now for 19 years and have the utmost respect for Levon Helm. He is by far the most UNDERRATED drummer in rock. The syncopation in his right foot and the way he just dances around his ride and hats is absolutely brilliant!! Not to mention that while he's doing it all he's also singing. Those who doubt his talent go find the Last Waltz version of Dixie...Levon's shining moment.

  • in the same way you have to respect mccartney for his contribution to the beatles, the same goes for robertson with the band. however, as far as im led to believe, he screwed the rest of the boys over when it came to song rights and royalties. if this is true then...................draw your own conclusions!!!! oh and just for the record, levon is the best drummer/singer iv ever seen/heard!!!!

  • is there an app that will mute the "robertson pinch harmonic of glory guitar fill/solo"?

  • jesus, look at richard. hard to imagine he lived another decade, and only died at his own hand...

  • Richard is a male Billie Holiday.Pain and soul in every line.Robbie said once in an interview,"sometimes we didn't know if Richard was reaching for a note,or if someone had hurt him really bad."When he hung himself in that hotel room in Miami,I guess we got the answer.

  • awesome groove. but lol at richards face in the beginning

  • @equallyeasilyfuqyou Richard had some of the best facial expressions.

  • Garth Husdon was the bomb, the glue that made this music what it is today.

  • ever wonder what Levon Helms fuck face looks like??? 2:34

  • @MoreTimeToKill lmfao

  • Comment removed

  • Richard manuel was the best singer in the world , not just the best in the band . tut

  • badass fucking jacket

  • this guy Richard is the best singer of the band then levin and theguy next to Robbie

  • @Frederick280900 you mean Rick Danko? (bass)

  • levon helm had nothing more than singing? he's the PERFECT drummer! pure taste, he's like the peter green of drumming, just a natural freak the way he can lift the songs by switching to cymbals! if they took all the chat out of the last waltz the whole band could have tore the shit out of everything!

  • @overjoylee ya that guy is a jackass levon helm one of the best drummers of that era

  • How did The Band's lead singer get one song on the Last Waltz?

  • @IanRoantree

Because they're THE BAND with no ego everyone shares the spotlight.

  • I love the creative energy from these guys. So raw and full of passion. Seems missing in today's music.....

  • OH, YES!!

  • I'm a huge fan of Scorsese's work, but I think he must've had a man crush on Robbie Robertson. How else could the guy who's easily the least musically talented in the group get about 75% of the face time in the movie? Good thing the soundtrack is without equal

  • @lesterwink23 LIsten, Im with you all the way in that too much focus was on Robbie but... seriously, least talented?? Sure, he had the worst voice but the guy could freaking rip on the guitar and don't ever forget this... without his incredible lyrics, The Band would have never left Dylans shadow.

  • Rich, Rick, Levon, Hillbilly soul!!! I can't get enough of these guys. The greatest music ever! I cant stop listening to the band. Garth Thanks for keep'in all together.

  • @sgoodell99

Right on man! # albums of pure americana even though they were canadian

  • @wallygator180 levon had enough american in him to cover for everyone else

  • man you notcie he has two strat pups run in series on the bridge of his guitar? thats weird man.

  • @00Jackacid coll, innit? he had his strat modified that way. that actual pickup switching configuration isn't changed. its basically the middle pickup moved back. so they are still parallel with the middle reversed in that second selector position, but it certainly would change the sound. he also had that model bronzed, which if you listen to the commentary added about ten pounds in weight. he changes guitar halfway through because the damn thing was so heavy.

  • @cdphatty.... then I reckon you'll have to bitch at Martin

  • Read the book THIS WHEEL'S ON FIRE. Scorsese and Robertson made the film that they wanted to spin Robbie as the main front man. To watch the movie you'd think that he sang on most songs, in reality the three part harmonies and lead vocals were developed by Manuel, Danko and Helm. Robert was simple preening in front of the mike.

  • @birdleso What does singing have to do with being a front man? Dylan couldn't sing worth a shit, but he still did. Robbie can't sing but he still cried out the words HE wrote, to the music HE wrote. If it weren't for Robbie, there would be no Band so quit bickering about Robbie just because you read some shit outta Levon's book. Maybe Levon is just a bit upset he had very little to contribute to The Band aside the lead vocals to a few songs.

  • @IanRoantree your joking right? Levon is one of the tasiest drummers of all time you jackass. Let me guess, you cant play drums can you?

  • @IanRoantree the band was a confluence of five amazing players at the right time. robbie did NOT make the band what it was, nor did levon or any of the others. but when they stopped working well together and listening to each other (let's not forget richard, rick, and robbie were all addicts of one kind or another at this time, especially richard) thats when it fell apart. scorcese's editing did not help things.

  • mahajohn - I second your comment.

  • After 16 years on the road, they still enjoy what they do!

  • these guys were unbelievable. no dead air time there. i'm 55 and remember seeing and listening to them in high school and they sound just as good to my ears as they did when we were all alittle younger

  • I am Brazilian, and about a year ago i saw The Last Waltz for the first time, and now i just can´t live without it. I visit those videos every week and I have a record CD to listen this in my car.

Just a few people know about The Band here in Brazil, when I talk about it, nobody in my age knows about these monsters of music, and i´m 26. My father´s friend that show The Last Waltz for me last year.

I never went to Canada, but these five guys make me love these country FOREVER!

  • @SrRojasRene I just re-discovered this wonderful concert. I remember seeing the movie when it came out and being blown away by all the talented singers and musicians. A classic rock movie, if ever there was. It's cool to hear how someone your age loves it too.

  • @Johnmadwiscclem Yes, I think good musics and good musicians are unforgetable and their music has no age, lives forever. Unfortunatly it's rare to see good music like this in the bands of today. The harmonys are just perfect and complete. Guitar, Drums, Keyboard, Piano, Bass, Voices... I love everything in The Band.

  • goddamn, can't get enough of Richard Manuel.

  • I wore the DVD out watching this!!! Love The Last Waltz!!!!!!!! Love their energy!!!

  • I even love the stage set-up. No fancy technological stuff needed. Just created a mood or atmosphere. Fantastic stuff!

  • What a band! man, they even dressed better in those days

  • @muffcrusher Hey don't forget Neil Young!

  • These Crackers, are the most important musical influence to come out of Canada. What an incredible group of musicians and individual characters.

  • but this is probably my FAVORITE song

  • Did Garth get any camera time at all? It's kinda unfitting considering the fact that he's one of the best rock and roll organists of all time.

  • @LegiitCashew he is kinda hard to film considering he is surrounded by thousends of piano/organ keys :P

  • The band doesn't work without Robbie Robertson. He is the gracious front man spotlighting the other members. He is thanking the musician leaving and welcoming the next act. He is brilliant during the interview throughout the DVD and played the guitar superbly. He story telling throughout the performance were sensational anicdotes. The band were all incredibly humble, extremely talanted, gentlemen and musicians.

  • Debate all you want. When those 4 guys made music the sum was greater then any of the parts . Just listen and leave it alone......be grateful that the gods put them together for the time they did. There was no "STAR". That was the point. They were born from Dylan and The Hawk and loved playin music together......

  • Robbie weakest in the Band???? How old are you brother? Just wondering is all. He is one of the best and The Band just wasnt the same. Ive seen them several times before and after Robby.

  • @noahstfuboi Robbie wrote a lot of the music, but you're correct, he's the least important element in The Band when it comes to live performance. hell, he even went into the studio after this was recorded and fixed all his solos.

  • @JeremyMoar Did he really? Wow....never knew that.

  • @noahstfuboi You mean robertson's the least musically TALENTED

  • Still Incredible!!

  • Levon Helm playes the best drums in the world...

  • That jacket! I need it.

  • Awesome.

  • If they meet at the crossroads,I think they would have done a little bit better.

  • The Band's music fused many elements: primarily old country music and early rock and roll, though the rhythm section often was reminiscent of Stax or Motown, and Robertson cites Curtis Mayfield and the Staple Singers as major influences, resulting in a synthesis of many musical genres. As to the group's songwriting, very few of their early compositions were based on conventional blues and doo-wop chord changes.

  • @pje85254

    why, WHO?

  • I can't stand country...but this BAND is so Hott!!!

  • great music, great troupe

  • Love how you can hear horns on the track...and yet look at the big wide shots of Rick and Robbie or of the entire Band - there are clearly a bunch of music stands with no horn players behind them.

  • @traininvain7

    Thats Garths synthesizer keyboards

  • @traininvain7 There was a full horn section at the last waltz... check the night they drove old dixie down.

  • God Bless Ronnie Hawkins. The Man who Really made it All Happen...

  • Brilliant, I've had this song in my head all week because of the personally apt words.

  • the one dislike was a mistake but we shot him so he wont mess anything else up

  • Why people don't grow beard like that anymore?

  • @AguinaldoJr are you serious? i cant swing a dead cat without hitting some bearded hipster in my town. all the indie rockers have em.

  • They're called The Band for a reason.

  • would have loved to see them live. Never heard them play a song that I did not think was amazing!!! The Band will live on forever

  • I'm pretty certain this group went down the crossroads. There's someheady mojo fojo magic going on here. How is this possible?!?!?

  • @mahajohn 4 realz

  • @mahajohn i'll tell you how...they played six days a night, six hour gigs for nearly ten friggin' years before they recorded anything you or i would know. by this point, they had been on the road sixteen years together. thats how.

  • @Putaspellonyou What!? Hard work!? Devotion to craft!? Expenditure of caloric and spiritual energy!? Say it is not so! Does this mean I won't ever play like this!? This makes me despondent...

  • saw them a couple weeks before this in lenox, mass.just the best

  • surely the one dislike was a mistake

  • what a beautiful soul Richard was too

  • Seeing Richard Manuel fills me with joy and sadness.

  • Being younger, lots of kids these days speak with reverence for artists of a bygone era. Artists like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Beatles, etc. I love those guys, too. But man, so many of them are missing out! The Band is simply fantastic. Who better to capture their brilliance than the one and only Martin Scorsese? Love it.

  • Where are The Bands of today?

  • Robbie is such a ham with his picking hand "fluttering" above the guitar after a seemingly poignant riff, like he's raising the dead or trying to make a handkerchief magically rise from a table.

  • This is THE Band. They have the best of both worlds; guys who can play and guys who can sing. Unlike the Grateful Dead...they can't sing for shit

  • i hate how little airtime richard got in the last waltz

  • @cdphatty and yet he still owns every scene he's in.

  • @cdphatty Garth Hudson got even less.

  • @christopherhoughton1 I know! Garth and Richard got fucking shortchanged through the whole thing! You'd think they were just two guys they found backstage before the show!

  • @cdphatty i totally agree man. I love every member of The Band but Richard Manuel has got to be my favorite, hands down.

  • @cdphatty I feel even worse for Garth... He got even less. It seems that just because they're on keyboards it makes them uninteresting. It seems like Robertson is in almost every shot, which isn't particularly cool.

  • @cdphatty Yea and Garth, but thats what you get when Robbie's the producer

  • The harmony in this song is mint!

  • There all perfect. and they have the best singers in the bizz.. amazing musicians.... the music plays them.

  • Richard Manuel was tore up from the floor up!!!!!!!

  • No the feeling too well (partly at least!): .. 'i just spent 16 days in the jailhouse, for the CRIME OF HAVING NO DOUGH, no. Here i am back out on the streets , FOR THE CRIME OF HAVING NOWHERE to go-o-o-o-oh! ." Some lines in this one ....

The Band at their F*****ing BEST!

  • The are NOT Coming to Save Mart Center in Fresno in June - that is the Band Perry, totally diffferent!

  • PERFECT IS NOT A FUNCTION OF ANYONE OR ANY BAND.THEY WERE A GREAT BAND.EACH MEMBER WAS GREAT.TO FIND DIFFERENCE THAT CAN JOIN TO FUSE TOGETHER AS SUCH A BAND IS SO RARE.AND THEY DID THAT.

  • I had my untouchable Rock Gods. But The Band was like seeing all my buddies playing together. With all their human faults, together, they were more musically talented than ANY of my Rock Gods. Synergy - 1+1=3.

  • SOO much fuggin SOUL!!

  • Gotta love Richard growling this song. A true rock & roll prodigy!

  • I have very short hair. I must grow it so I can look like these guys.

Seriously. What a great song. Seriously rockin'.

  • They still kick ass. True R&R, wish they were still around and playing.

  • Man, i dont understand why i'm seeing all these comments about how they are great but imperfect. highly disagree the winterland show is in my opinion one of the best performances ever filmed, the show from start to finish is musically perfect, the only aspect you could say was imperfect was when clapton's strap feel off during "further on up the road" and thats one of my favourite songs because they have to improvise and it still came out perfect in my eyes.

  • Helm kind of looks like a minature version of Dubya - sort of.

  • that little guitar lick. Pure, good ol music. Thanks guys ffor all the great memories.

  • Benjamin, WE know what Bonnie knows. Stop aside now and all will be forgiven and WE will recognize your sanity, your repentance and WE will see to it that all Jews living in Palestine now will be treated with full dignity, given all assistance necessary, including Military Transport of all possessions to safe havens of your choice. WE, then will guarantee open, sincere and productive negotiations towards the peaceful return of Jews to Palestine to be treated always as cherished brothers in peace

  • let's face it.....it had to be tough for Robbie bein' as fucking cute as he is with a bunch of motherfuckers like you but I'll bet he could drink with Fidel, in fact, I'd like to test that theory in person....God Bless You Robbie you fucking crazy ass clairvoyant you...you fuckin' rock pretty boy....but if I was a girl I'd put your ass in your place and say: do me all night long baby....but I ain't no girl except for Shawn Colvin so observe the chicken wire hound dog....love ya.

  • @ZZZZAS what the...nahh just kidding i get what ya mean ide totally turn gay for hendrix

  • I WATCHED AS THEY CARRIED rm OUTTA THE MOTEL IN WINTER PARK FLA. i SAW THE SHOW THE NIGHT B4!

  • Comment removed

  • @youaretheblues what?

  • @justdropem I removed this, thanks.

  • This video, as well as others posted on YouTube from this concert, have been sped up. Not only because I've timed it with the real concert on Blu-Ray, but if you look closely on this video, Danko's hair flops around too quickly.

Maybe it wasn't done on purpose, but perhaps it should be reposted to keep true to the real thing.

  • @lav74yahoo Ah, the well-known "Danko-hair" method of timekeeping.

  • I think Robertson was pacing himself i mean they were full on for how many hours?

  • Robbie may not have had the perfect singing voice, but he should play the guitar.

  • @Furthur805 Ok who do you think is playing the guitar?

  • who says Levon isnt the perfect singer!?!?

  • MANUEL HAD THE VOICE YOU CAN NEVER FORGET

IT JUST SINKS INTO YOU FOREVER

  • Richard Manuel had an amazing voice and I'm sure had he lived, he would have gone on to do even bigger and better things. It always saddens me to think that so many great artists, don't seem to know their own self worth. God, if only he could have seen himself in the postive way that the people who loved him did. Hopefully he's able to love himself now. He was something else. The real thing. Peace.

  • Ever get the feeling that Robbie was trying soooo hard to be "cool", it sure look like it to me

  • @thefloyd76 nah, hes probably having a bit of fun, i do that at my gigs =)

  • @thefloyd76 haha, no. Robbie WAS cool!

  • @duneputekute was? still is

  • everyone of the band with the exception of robertson are wonderful singers

  • Robertson's last part was the shit!

  • One Band fan was so moved by Richard's suit and funky groove that he accidently pressed the 'dislike' button.

  • @andotech That is really the only logical explanation.

  • I want his jacket.

  • took my kids to see this at the drive-in; they listened to it on vinyl; i agree an epic event; sadly, a few years after this Richard Manuel took his life. All the more reason this performance still moves me.

  • wolfman jack much ? lol .. sorry ... i just HAD to say that !!

  • Richard killed the couch for that suit

  • 1 guy is out of shape

  • Richard Manuel is THE COOLEST DUDE in THE BAND!!!!

  • Damn nice suit there :)

  • real music!!!to each his or hers.but rap is crap!!! if they encounterd what they talk about, and try to sing.i,t would be a shit and run accident.most have a brave body, but their legs just won,t stand for i,t.THE BAND WILL FOREVER STAND!!!

  • Levon is, in my estimation, one of the most underappreciated drummers ever. That amazing tenor voice is sure hard to overlook, but the drums are his first love...his passion...the quality of the tone that he gets out of them is incredible, not to mention some of the best chops for a rock and roll drummer ever seen on stage. Every young musician should aspire to get to the level that Levon reached and has maintained for almost half a century. What a legend.

  • Man, dig Richard's suit! That is something else.

  • FUCKIN RICHARD MANUEL!

  • yes, the Band's music is the very best. my favorite It Makes No Difference

  • @joplinsdrink a masterpiece timelass from the dr rite through to bobby dylan 4ever young the band man rip rick richard manuel troubled souls but genieus fk love them

  • 1 dIslike!!! WTF!!!

  • 32 years and it still sounds like the best music ever made. true originals.

I salute you Richard, Rick, Levon, Garth, and Robbie.

  • LONG LIVE LEVON !!!

    Happy Thanksgiving...

  • This is what an amalgamation of greatness sounds like...

  • I honestly don't know who's voice I like better, Levon, Richard or Rick. They're all such great singers in different ways.

  • the perfectly balanced band. Love this song. God Bless Richard Manuel.

  • Bring back beards and long hair. Also ban short spiked hair and fake tans.

  • @Dwo125 And teeth so freakin' white they blind you.

  • Bring back beards and long hair.

  • Comment removed

  • I have to say...i love Richard Manuel<3

  • This is what I love about The Band, they don't have that perfect singer, they don't have that perfect guitarist, bassist or pianist... But together, they make the perfect band.

  • @GiggleBlizzard Bang on, they are THE BAND. But they do have a kick-ass drummer.

  • @thisismyidgdi No argument here. Levon Helm is the greatest.

  • @GiggleBlizzard they do have the perfect singer--richard manuel.

  • @GiggleBlizzard I Think they are perfect at everything!! Singing and Playin....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @GiggleBlizzard i beg to differ.. they had unbelievably good singers, a sick guitar player who pretty much invented that style, and a sick piano player in both richard and garth. i do like that you didnt say they didnt have a perfect drummer cuz everyone knows levon IS as perfect as it gets haha
