Well the way she came up to you was rude. If she want's to have you as a client come up to the person say hey My name is ____ and I do hair. Here is my card, and I would love to give you a cool modern cut. Never put down the future client. That woman was just wrong.
I could not agree more...I am a hairdresser/nail tech/esthetician and I make sure that put my best face forward...hair, makeup, and nails...however i have had the displeasure of working with some that think that this is optional. I tell new stylists to look in the mirror and ask themselves "Would I want myself to do my hair, etc...the way I look." I believe that if you are going to represent the industry you should always look the part.
I've had one negative experience and it was meant to be a reputable salon! they actually double booked me with another client! I managed to be seen on time though. There was no receptionist (she had gone home) so the phone kept going off - while midst shampooing my hair she goes to take the call! WTH?? Not only that i wasnt even quoted the correct price for my haircut. Talk about disorganised!
I completely agree! The stylist I normally go to is one that keeps her hair and makes sure the rest of her staff is up to point, whether is a new color, cut whatever, they always look great and I wouldnt go to any place else where they stylists (nail techs etc.) dont look presentable. Just not cool
I agree, I WAS going to a Dominican lady to get my hair done, she was great!! But the phone was stapled to her head! LOL I stopped going, I miss her but I can't take her and that phone!
I so totally agree. I think the experiences that you describe is what drove me to be a in house beautician for the last seven years. I got so tired of what I call 'stacking'...whent he stylist over bookes and you sit around with a wet head or in the shampoo bowl 'waiting' your turn when you clearly made an appointment. If you are not together...then I don't need to sit in your chair...I will just do my hair at home and come out looking better and still have money in my pocket.
I agree with you 100%. I feel the same way about personal trainers. There are a few at my gym walking around with pot bellys and what not. How in the heck are you gonna train someone when you look a hot mess?? Same principle with hair stylists.
i always found it amusing when beauticians don't do their own hair. that alone wouldn't deter me from letting them do my hair though. the one i went to a few years ago had a few jacked up hairdos but she was one of the best stylist in the area. i did stop going to her eventually tho because she was always late for our appointments and she would double book herself.
Well alraines you sound a lil like me i feel like if you dont feel relaxed at your hair dresses than thats not cool if your hair dreesers hair is not done than there is deffinately a problem at work are at home with them & no young lady in there right mind wants to hear some ignorant person aurgueing with there babies daddy in a hair salon its just a turn off & also the main focal point is you getting your hair done everyone is happy once you walk-in the salon & when you walk out but i feel u.
I agree withu sherry! I went to this 1 lady. Dont get me wrong, she was on POINT! But her bf came in the door cussin her azz out and they proceeded to arguedirecly above my head! I wish the drama cud stay home so it doesnt outshine their skill.
You are absolutely right! Their hair and nails should be done! I will never sit in a stylist chair if her hair looks terrible. Why would she do that to herself? I'd question if she'd be able to take proper care of my hair. I remember being in a salon and the head stylist was asking me how I grew my hair so fast after she cut it a few months back. I would have thought she would know this herself....seeing as she was the "professional" and owner of the salon. I never went back.
YES! When I go to a new salon, I look at the stylist's hair. (Said to stylists) "Yes, I sure do, check you out even if you don't see my eyes doing it!" (LOL). IMHO, I think their hair is their calling card. And makes me think, "If they don't do their hair, how are they going to do my hair?!" I look at their station, their products, everything basically. I ask a lot of questions. And this is even before, they start touching me. Especially in that field, appearance is everything!
Then on the other hand, when I found a stylist that their main focus was "healthy hair" & not just "the bomb hair-do". IMHO, we were going to be together for life (this is before I went natural and one of the main reason why is b/c "new" stylist, pro. for 17 yrs, chemically burned me, but let me stay on topic). I'd only go to her on her "slow days", hit her up before she went on vacation, did & used whatever she told me to; it's like a close-relationship; the stylist and my hair are married now!
I wholeheartedly agree! If you can't even do your hair, or your hair is half way done I can't trust that you will do mine. Take pride in your salon, in your product, and yourself!
I agree. If hair and nails is your business, you should be promoting that business on yourself. I always notice the hair of stylist. where I go, some of them always look nice while others look blah.
I have never understand how a hairdresser can do my hair and hook me up and then look a hot mess, it does make me a little leery to let her do something.
I stop going to salons for other reasons BUT back in Atlanta while walking out of the bank, I had a stylist who's hair was in a 2" ponytail, dry, split ends everywhere with thin edges while running her fingers through my hair(without asking) & handing me her card quoted "Yo' hair is too long & boring, I can cut & update for you and make it look much better than it does". I gave her a blank stare & got in my car. SMH
I feel you, i used to say the same thing. I don't trust a hairstylist with damaged hair. That's like going to a dentist with bad breath, or a personal trainer who is overweight, lol.
But on the other hand, i can understand that maybe that stylist is in so high demand that she doesnt have time to work on her own hair, like if its pulled back in a ponytail that doesnt bother me, as long as its neat and looks good, no bald spots, breakage, dandruff/etc, then i'm cool...
EXACTLY! I've heard stylists say the last thing they want to do after a long day is do their own hair. I always thought stylists do each others hair for fun after to shop closes... but again, I guess they get tired, too. Like you said, a nice neat healthy simple pony is perfect for me to have confidence in a stylist and her abilities... AND a GREAT reputation. I must say... I do get annoyed with LACK of professionalism. Having fun is cool... just keep in clean and light-hearted.
I haven't been to a salon in years. I do't remember if the stylist's hair was done or not. LOL I do, however have a problem watching videos or tutorials of ppl giving advice on healthy hair if their hair appears damaged & unhealthy.
I totally agree. I need some advice from you. I am a young man in the cosmotology field. I am nervous because i am just starting... is it worth it????
OMG I TOTALLY AGREE!!!! i will not go to a new stylist who's on hair looks busted. bc i'm tryna have HEALTHY hair, not just flyy styling. u should love & live what u do. its just like going to a doctor who is overweight and smokes....how u gonna keep me healthy??? a dentist with JACKED teeth...nope. i don't go to any of the above! lol.
I would NOT have a stylist do my hair if his/hers looked like trash IMO if they can not take care of their own hair then they can not touch mine my hair is SO healthy since i have joined the hair boards i went from a neck length bob to bsl I DO GO to the dominicans when i am over 10 weeks post to get the roots blown out but other than that I am my own stylist
i've been to over 20 hairstylists in my life and only one has had healthy hair...........alot of them have had short fried hair...........seriously! two were men so they might not have counted......but, yeah i don't meet many stylist with HEALTHY HAIR!
I totally agree, especially with hair. If your hair is jacked up, why should I trust you with my hair. I want a stylist who cares about hair and maintaines her own her.
I agree with you. You can't be THAT busy that you can't even look well kept and neat when getting ready for work in the morning. The rest of us put some effort into how we look to go to work and I don't think it should be ANY different for stylists. I don't need them to have a serious 'do every day...just look professional and well groomed.
One question Mrs. Raines, why do people usually choose to go to a stylist? Because of word of mouth. If the service is decent and they have skills, I'm there. It has no bearings on what they look like.
Hi JLady, I gave you a thumbs up, but sometimes it does depend on the person's appearance or the salon/place atmosphere. Ex: I kept hearing about this lady -- locally -- that was excellent w/micro braids (yrs ago when this happened); I finally decided to make an appt; went to her place of business (her home); knocked on the door twice no answer; finally a guy opens & a puff of marijuana smoke blows by me! Now I asked myself, do you want your braids to smell like a joint? Uh, no!
i agree..whenever i went to a salon i always looked at the stylist hair and if i didnt like what i saw I would either ask for another stylist of leave....
Give them a break they are busy people. Every stylist is not the same, not every stylist has the same personality. However, you will notice a difference in service from a stylist\ who is well groomed vs. one who is not. For the purpose of a professional demeanor, it's important. But other than that as long as my hair looks good when Ithey are finished, it's ok by me. I say the messier their hair is, the more they must work, lol!. Messy heads - If they like it, then I love it!
We are all busy but we must make time for ourselves and represent our line of business. you wouldn't go to a bank that did not look professional or go to an overweight trainer that uses that excuse. It really is about perception.
Sure in the ideal world, if you value your business and are truly business minded your appearance will reflect that. My point is that not everyone is stuck on what the stylist hair looks like, and it depends on the stylist's character and personality. The stylist will attract certain clientale based on aesthetics, but I guarantee if their game is tight they will have clientale regardless. I agree with you and it is weird- a person with expertise in beauty, not value their appearance?
i think salons should be professional. black people a lot of emphasis on hair, so i think salons and stylists should just as serious (not saying people can't talk and have fun, but there should be level of professionalism).
This is how I feel about overweight doctors. Doctors should not be allowed to be overweight. You are a healthcare professional how can you come down on me about my weight and you clearly should be on a lifestyle change with me?? Same with a beautician if you hair is looking a mess I would automatically think "she needs to go to the hairdresser. My HD's hair is always on point.
I agree...And your not being picky..Its all about professionalism..and its depressing that places lack so much of it...I been to a hair salon that had roaches and rats and they expected me to pay $100 for a $80 style....We should value ourselves because we do judge people for their appearance.
I feel like as a so called professional u should keep up ur appearance. And i mean like u said it's no excuse for u NOT do SOMETHING to it. At the least keep ya hair wrapped. Whether u own the business or not, ur apart of it and how u look reflects on the business. If ur head looked jacked up then i know for a fact than im not gonna trust u in MY hair.
is there any more v-logs out there of people who love to rant, complain, ect ect , let me know

We all know that there are days when you just don't have the time!
But on such days you can always go for a simple pony tail or bun, and just plain, clean finger nails.
I often wonder how someone obviously finds those extra minutes in the morning to do their mascara, but not to take their chipped nail polish off.
Well, I guess it's just beyond me... ;)
