@PTEredmond a bullet carries enough energy to set it off, but works better if you mix some aluminum in too(I'd say up to 10%), increases the sensitivity enough to be pretty consistent.

No and you would need something that explodes with some force. I dont know the exact number but its somewhere in the range of 1500 fps to 2000 from what ive read. To detonate at lower speeds you would need to desensitize the material.
i just got some from 2 instant cold packs is there a way i could just use a little anfo as a firecracker. and how do you set it off? my uncles friend who was in the special ops said you hav to set it off with another explosion
Dynamite has nothing to do with ammonium nitrate. I would suggest you do maybe a teeny tiny bit of research before mixing up explosive compounds... Most of them are not very forgiving in the manufacturing process... particularly dynamite. I mean you could wing it or go off the advice of some message board idiot, just stay away from me when you do it.....
... or ... DYNAMITE invented by Alfred Nobel in 1864 is named after diatomaceous earth and was origionaly a mixture of that and Nitroglycerine more modern formulations substitute nitrocelulose. Ammonium nitrate does not enter into the production of DYNAMITE. If you want to misuse the term fine. But hold back the dumb fuck comments.
Yes, thank you, I'll accept that. Proper information sourcing and using terms correctly is genius. Especially when some jackass decides to slam me for accurate information. A little "wikipediaing" or better still research with an actually reliable information source is what those, to whom I responded, could have benefited from before touching their keyboards.
well... anyone who's ever done a research paper knows that wikipedia is NOT a reliable source because anyone can post whatever they want on it. i could go to dynamite right now and post "dynamite and poop are synonymous. dynamite is nothing more than human feces in a container with a wick." and it probably wouldnt get edited out for like 4 weeks.
@thevaliant123 it would probably be reverted by the time you took a screen print. Certain vandalism will trigger protocols. Minor mistakes can linger for years, but that is true of ANY encyclopedia, which is why they're considered secondary sources, even Britannica. Also, any encyclopedia, including Wiki, has sources referenced that one can use.
Now, if you want to say that the Wikipedia geeks have longer entries about Superman's costumes than about ANFO, THAT would be a valid complaint.
@amos2500 there is no need to say that because you can find instructions on many websites and if you work in law enforcement then why are you even making bombs? very smart buddy
@amos2500 thats just stupid to think that ppl dont know what tannerite is or ap. and its not like anyone is looking for information from videos like this. and the chemistry behing explosives is completly legal. Making the explosives isnt. You cant make information illegal. thats basicly communism.
@makettaja Making or storing explosives at a residence is illegal. However, You may manufacture display fireworks for personal use at your property without obtaining a Federal explosives license or permit (a manufacturer’s license is needed only by persons engaged in the business of manufacturing fireworks for sale, distribution, or other commercial purpose). However, where storage occurs, you must comply with all storage requirements in 27 CFR, Part 555, Subpart K.
@USFSCrimes I wasnt even talking about making. I talked about the information on how to make. Every chemist knows and chemistry book has information about explosives. I meant that the information isnt illegal.
Take a chem class. It isn't hard, you need to write a balanced molecular equation of your reactants, determine molar mass of components, and mix accordingly. Anyone know which hydrocarbon produces the best mole ratio? I'd work out the formulas but I don't have the time.
It takes time to write out a complete, balanced equation. Especially with that added Aluminum.
I wasn't trying to criticize you, but the truth is if you don't have a basic understanding of the chemistry/physics involved then you're not someone I want playing with explosives.
what i meant in my above state ment, is not that what he is shooting is flash powder, but that Ammonium nitrate can be used to make a strong flash. just clearing that up.
According to my understanding, Ammonium Nitrate IS explosive on its own but it requires an incredible primer because its heat of activation is so high. A rifle won't do it. When most people say Ammonium Nitrate they mean NH4NO3 + a hydrocarbon, usually diesel fuel which drastically lowers the HoA so you can go boom boom easier. With that mixture than yeah, a high powered rifle should do the trick.
Nope, unfortunately it's not enough. Even a high velocity rifle like a .270 WSSM isn't enough shock to initiate it. Adding some potassium perchlorate to sensitize it will allow magnum rifles to detonate it, but small caliber rifles still won't. There are other sensitizers that work even better, but I'm drawing a blank right now. I think it may be possible to use an amount of ammonium nitrate mixed with AL powder (flash powder) to initiate ANFO (the name for the explosive you described).
What about a multistage system where you have it wrapped in a shell of gun powder? And then you set off the gun powder, compressing and shocking the core? What about a .50 BMG round? An electric arc? Or vaporization fuze?
the main thing about ammonium nitrate is it is not as easily detonated as other explosives, it takes a shock wave from another smaller primer, or in this case, a shot of a bullet to split its chemical bonds, but the results are devastating
Any fuel containing oxygen will explode (or release hot gasses, in the case of thermite). It needs only sufficient detonation and the right circumstances to release it's potential. Sugar is another good potential, since it is C6H12O6. Fuel (Hydrogen, Carbon...+Oxygen. Under the right conditions, it will explode. I use Potassium Permanganate to sensitize it. It doesn't have the kick of tannerite, though.
Aluminized kinepak and some mysterious chemical? Dont think so. Have read about it for some months ago. Its some different types, but noone have NM in it. NM vil make it more unsensitive, and remove all the hot spots that may be there.
No. You need something with a high exlosive velocity. Also, AP(acetone peroxide) is a high explosive and is extremely dangerous to work with, as it is heat and shock sensitive. As a result, it's very hard to buy, and not something that's commonly found in a consumer product.
Something about one quart in size, 200 yards away, open sights? With my buddy's rifle, I've only fired 4 times? I didn't think that was too shabby. The 100 power zoom lens brings it in closer than it really was. It was hard visible with the naked eye.
So tannerite is actualy ammonal? Why will the AN detonate so easily when mixed with Al? It cant be because of the low density AN thing. Its still to insensitive. And because the AN and AL isnt chemicaly mixed, it cant be because its fueled, like with FO or anything else eighter.
I've read that one type of tannerite containes AN mixed with Al powder, titanium sponge and zirconium hydride and ammonium chlorate. I've read about many other mixtures with ammonium pherclorate, sulfur, Ethylene glycol, Ptassiom Chlorate, antimony trisulfide, magnesium, calcium carbonate and some other shit.
Hmm, yeah I guess I was a bit too quick o reply. I guess Ammonal is a cheap type of tannerite, and real tannerite contains much more than Al. But the Al added to AN sensitizes it, due to density changes and changes in physical properties. This creates hotspots and areas of concentrated energy, when a shockwave/bullet travels through the material.
The other additives in tannerite sensitizes it further. Therefore Ammonal is mostly used when initiated by a detonator instead, due to the lower sensitivity... I guess :P
From what I know, hotspots are created when the material is affected by energy, before it detonates itself. I.e. when a blasting cap explodes, then it may create hotspots in the seconsary material. Making a full detonation more likely. For instance, adiabatic compression in voids is also a hotspot... As far as I know
The compression pulse generated during detonation compresses the air bubbles in the explosive, resulting in extremely high temperatures or "hot-spots". These "hot-spots" would appear to sustain and enhance the detonation propagation.
More ideal detonation behavior, hence higher detonation energy and higher brisance Detonation velocity slightly higher and more constant through hole charge length. Increased small diameter sensitivity. Accelerated build-up to stable detonation velocity. More complete reaction with less after burning and fumes.
Just wanted to note here that you should avoid mixing chlorates with sulfur. It makes them very unstable (as in, they can go off from the heat of sitting in the sun). Usually it's not a problem if you are mixing a target and using it in a few minutes... but don't store any that have chlorates and sulfur mixed.
Yes. The shock from a high speed bullet is more than sufficient to set off most explosives, minus plastic explosives which were engineered to withstand small amounts of rifle fire.

can u use hydrogen(explode not burn) to detonate ANFO?
i dunno where to get AP(someone tell me)?
-thanks-

ammonium nitrate is in those cool packs for sports injuries

No. You need something with a high exlosive velocity. Also, AP(acetone peroxide) is a high explosive and is extremely dangerous to work with, as it is heat and shock sensitive. As a result, it's very hard to buy, and not something that's commonly found in a consumer product.

why buy AP when u can make it at home...

Something about one quart in size, 200 yards away, open sights? With my buddy's rifle, I've only fired 4 times? I didn't think that was too shabby. The 100 power zoom lens brings it in closer than it really was. It was hard visible with the naked eye.

That is exactly what I said. AN and Al is tannerite...

I guess :P

So the hotspots will have something to do with it? Isnt the advantage of hotspots first when the mixture is allready detonating?
blowjobbftw 4 years ago
From what I know, hotspots are created when the material is affected by energy, before it detonates itself. I.e. when a blasting cap explodes, then it may create hotspots in the seconsary material. Making a full detonation more likely. For instance, adiabatic compression in voids is also a hotspot... As far as I know

A little quote from roguesci:)

Thought so

Just wanted to note here that you should avoid mixing chlorates with sulfur. It makes them very unstable (as in, they can go off from the heat of sitting in the sun). Usually it's not a problem if you are mixing a target and using it in a few minutes... but don't store any that have chlorates and sulfur mixed.

Damn man you know how to have fun, i need to move back to texas after seein these videos of all the stuff people do out in the desert...

Than this is tannerite. AN is as insensitive as plastic explosives
Uberownager 5 years ago
This came with a dry silvery powder that needed to be added to "sensitize" it. But it is ammonium nitrate and a metallic powder only.
amos2500 5 years ago
Yes. The shock from a high speed bullet is more than sufficient to set off most explosives, minus plastic explosives which were engineered to withstand small amounts of rifle fire.
amos2500 5 years ago
Pretty nice explosion.
Usually you mix the AN with some oil diesel.
Was this a AN+Diesel bomb or what?

The catalyst was powdered aluminum, I believe. I bought this at a gunshow as an "exploding scarecrow."
