hey , how did u teach a quaker to step up and touch ? i just got a quaker about 5 days ago and she is really sweet and never ever bit me , just pushes my finger away when i want her to step up , its really cute and all but i want her to step up ... help
@birdiedanik31 Keiko is extremely smart - I spent a lot of time with her, googled and joined a forum for quaker parrots where I learned a lot about their body language. When she keeps pushing your finger away, she is trying to gently tell you, not now - or leave me be. If you keep insisting, you may get bit.
You can also go to youtubes search box and type - training your parrot - there's lots of vids that can give you great instructions on what you need to know. Just have patience -
Hi, I am wondering what type of bird is best for a child that is 12-13 yrs. old? Is very responsible and takes care of, 2 cats, 2 dogs, 1 turtle, 1 hamster. So i am asking which type of bird would be best? She also has plenty of time to spend with the animal too.
Hi, Cockatiels are excellent 'starter' birds that can get very attached to you, riding around on your shoulder, talking, singing and such. Just get them as a baby or young and TAME.
Quakers are very comical too, just - the same - a baby, or young and TAME.
I think all quakers are like that. Keiko was extremely afraid of the little balls for awhile, until I just kept working with her and soon she came around
Quakers are very aware of their environment. Anything they can't recognise they will be scared of.
To get your bird to play with a new toy, firstly leave the toy in view of the bird. The next day, play with the toy while ignoring the bird, this will arouse curiosity. Move the toy closer to the birds home, and repeat this for a few days, always show interest in the toy. Your bird will want to know what's so interesting and will eventually explore the toy itself. Then move it into the birds home.
Actually she was afraid of them at first, and as soon as I would give one to her, she would toss it away. Then she saw me put my mouth on it, and that I was not afraid of it, so she was able to pick it up from me. Then after awhile, she would hold it until I said, "Drop It".
Awsome, your parrot is adorable and smart.! ( :

Thanks for answering. Do you know anything about Parakeetts? Are they good for a 12-13 yr old too? Which type of bird would you recomend?
