  • This is a wonderful video. To josephs180 - first, this has nothing to do with sexual orientation, idiot, and second, it is a beautiful human experience into music. When you mature, you will learn open your cultural filter and learn. Hope your not dumb enough to write about this way for your class. if so... F!

  • great musics. though where's the brush drum sound coming from?

  • @bwtwomey when they make these instruments they put "rattles" on the shells filled with dry beans or rice. That's how the "brush" sound is produce. Every note they hit vibrates the shell.

I am sick of western music and these guys are so beautifully natural and harmonic.

Thanks a lot to them and to you for the video!

  • @quicktolisten so did Micheal Jackson... ha ... whoops sorry.. I shouldn't have said that sorry-- bye

  • This genre of music is timeless it was passed to us by our fore fathers...they used it with along vocal melodies and with poetry and till today it is as beautiful ...by the way this is not a 'Thumb Piano' it is a MBIRA ...lets keep it that way !

  • its too late the western world are teaching it as thumb piano, they are creating versions and versions lol

  • @Phoonguy

you will find that the term thumb piano is mostly used by people playing the western 'versions' of the instrument. people who play zimbabwean mbira music call it mbira. I have found all westerners who play the zimbabwean instrument and its repertoire respectfully call it 'mbira'.

  • varikugadzira dzavo, i'm glad we are the first, this instrumen is serious

  • etnomúsica: qué interesante...

  • Also is that Shona that the singer is speaking?

  • What is he saying in English-- could somebody tell me-- This rhythm is so beautiful

  • it's Shona

he's talking about how he went overseas to study so that the can make more and support his family better. He meant to return next year so he can marry his girl. While studying and working abroad, he'd send his girl money, but as he neared completion of his studies, the letters from her were no longer coming. He then found out that she'd married his friend.

  • There is no height to which we cannot climb by using the active intelligence of our own minds. Mind creates, and as much as we desire in Nature we can have through the creation of our own minds.

  • The mind is truly amazing!

  • Reggie, it's good to see you are alive and your spirit is not broken! For those of you who do not know, Reggie is a survivor of Robert Mugabe's "Operation Murambatsvina" in 2005. His home, along with the homes of thousands of others, was bulldozed---and yet here he is, still singing and playing his mbira. Reggie is a tribute to the courage of the human spirit. If you happen to read this Reggie, contact me. I am Ron from New Mexico---we jammed on guitars when you were here.

  • This is what being in touch with your inner spirituality is all about. I wish for the days of our true ancestors. I'm pretty sure I was born in the wrong time frame. That is where I belonged

  • Fantastic trio...and the little dancer just represents the spark in the music makes you move. Great voice and love the guitar!

  • Great to see Tafara on YouTube! It reminds me of home.

    Norah from Chitungwiza

  • Enchanting!

love that tuning on his mbira! & his singing!

gotta get myself a tuning like that

  • D major C# note accentuated against D riffs on the guitar, giving a major 7th. 6/8 time, sometimes doubled. To dig the groove on guitar, identify the cycle of 6 as you listen, and play 4 beats Dmaj7 and 2 beats G. First get this going then substitute Em for G every second time. Later each beat takes a triplet, two triplets per chord.

  • There's something fishy about that analysis of the chord progression. Most traditional Shona mbira songs consist of 4 phrases, each 4 beats long and containing 3 chords. The beat is triplets. In most traditional songs, the chords change every four pulses. However, Mahororo (the first song) is an exception where the chord changes are timed with the beat, making some of the chords longer than others. Still, there are three chords in each four beat phrase, and no seventh chords.

  • If you play the song on the white keys of the piano, the progression is the following:

    G , b dim , e ; G , C , e ; a , C , e ; G , b dim , d .

However, this group is playing a more traditional tuning than that, which I think is what fishbird7 was talking about. I hope this helps.

  • i thought it was cute how that little boy started dancing with the groove. great spiritual music. this music is good for the soul.

  • Yes I gree, that sweet little Mashona child really was the star of this video, what a sweetheart, hes got the rythm spirit in him!!!
