If I've notice the difference correctly, the difference between the Violin and the Fiddle is the way you hold it, really. Fiddlers hold the instrument either at an angle or straight, and Violinists usually hold it to the side, with their head a little tilted more towards it. Charlie Daniels, for example, usually holds the fiddle straight down, and it can be speculated he does that because of how hard he plays.
Now can we please pay attention to the lesson, people?
Mr. Kaynor is demonstrating a concept, not playing a piece of music. You have aptly demonstrated that arrogance is the province of youth. In listening to your playing, perhaps in 30 years your playing will have gained some emotional depth. Good technique but otherwise dull.
I beg to differ babigirl911 a guitar and an AXE are different a piano and BONES are different...the difference is how they are played you won't find a fiddle in an orchesta and you won't find a violin at a Hoedown. Tell someone I play fiddle they expect a certain thing if you say I play violin one would expect Bach.
he seems very skilled at the fiddle, but i couldnt help but laugh when the camera backed away from his serious face to show him sitting there balancing the bow on his fingers :)
@Cr0mar If a person is playing quick, short notes on the violin whether it be classical or not, why in the fuck would you use the entire bow? If you actually pay attention to someone playing the violin/fiddle, you would see that the entire bow is used for longer notes, not the shorter ones.
You're a dumbass who clearly knows nothing about playing the fiddle.
Why do violinist and fiddlers hold the bow diffrently? Does it really make that much of a diffrence? It seems to me that When people fiddle they tend to hold the bow it higher up then violinist.
I think what shirly means is the placement of your hand on the bow.. As for some people that hold it down at the bottom because that's the way they're taught to hold it.. And the tradition people who will hold the bow at or above the frog, like Mairead Nesbitt, for example. And from what I've heard with the way they hold the bow it's really just how they're taught.
the difference between a fiddle and a violin is the music that you play on them.. it's the same instrument!! irish music and country music is when they call it a fiddle and classical music is for the violin!!
i was wondering does anyone know if it is possible for a fidde player (me) to learn how to play guitar cause i don't know if i will be able too...i'm afraid it will mess up my fiddle playing because of the position your hand has to be in!!!!!
Erm.. well as neary every single country has their on veriation on folk, no Ireland, so don't get cocky!
And, for you information, there was an instrument used in finnish folk called a fiddle before the violin was ever around, so please, get your facts right.
Not cocky, but I think you misunderstand what I am speaking about. I know that TODAY'S US country music is derived from the folk music of the Scots and Irish who basically made up a lot of the south and areas in the Appalachian Mountains and surrounding areas. The southern accent also a derivative of the accents of those who were scottish and irish and so on.
no your wrong, TODAYS US country is derived from pop music and popular band wagon bullshit. Hank Sr, Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, and bluegrass is derived from old folk tunes. This new "country music" isnt country at all!! Its pop bullshit!
i was told thats is good to try to pick up a guitar, bass, cello, drums and any thing else that mite come around it can keep your music form getting to stale..
fiddles and violins are the same thing. sometimes fiddle players sand their bridges down, so that playing 2 strings at once (double stops) are easier. The Strings are not necessarily different, but can be. Regardless, the instrument is the same (one can change bridges easier than one can strings, and neither are part of the intrument, they are part of the "set-up", which effect the intonation, sound, and feel of the instrument. Its mostly a question of taste, style, and r'epertoire.
i know for a fact u dont, u can definitely pluck, ive seen it at many folk festivals, just type in plucking violins in google, it will show you, Dave Swarbrick demontrates it well very often
Violin and Fiddle are the same thing. Violin is the term from Roman-based languages and Fiddle is from Germanic languages. Today, the main distinction is that if the instrument is played in a more classical format, it is called a Violin. If played in a more folk style, it is called a Fiddle. Many fiddle players will alter the bridge to be flat to allow for quicker string changing.
superb i have wanted to play the fiddle for as long as i can remember, cant find a teacher . this is spot on david , extend this your on a winner . Tony lancashie England

@blackbudge fiddle is an interchangeable word for violin
gpc510 2 years ago
umm im pretty sure u fiddle on a violin...
most people think fiddle and violin are different though....
and i know a few people who do some fiddling and they use violins ok?
blackbudge 2 years ago
@blackbudge a fiddle is a violin used to play certain types of music, but its not a set in stone term. I never said a violin and fiddle are different.
yes people do use the term fiddle as a verb, but both uses of the word are correct.
I know thousands of people who go to the annual bluegrass festival in Idaho that know exactly what I mean.

u know we could both be right and it doesnt really matter

You can tell that by the age of 60 David Kaynor has only 30 years of fiddle playing experience, coz it sounds poor.
If he had taken it up much younger then perhaps it would sound nice and authentic and sensitive to traditional styles.

what's the difference between a fiddle and a violin?
They're the same except the violin looks smaller because of the size of the violinist's head.

@jsmith0433
The secret of the difference lies only in the name,
For a violin and a fiddle are exactly one and same.
You can dissect poke and prod, or analyse and display them,
But the only difference you'll ever find is in the minds of folk that play them.
