I thank everybody for their responses to my video. Replying to that video was slightly spontaneous on my end. This has been a fun exchange with a bunch of strangers.
math is IN A WAY abstract - existing as a thought or idea but not having a concrete existence - since it was totally created in our heads. music involves hearing the notes, touching the instrument playing. in a way, its more intelligent, in a different sense cuz math is counting in ur head, the concept is almost totally in our heads. nothing. just a comment.
I don't quite agree: I think music is abstract to the exact same extent.
When someone plays an instrument, "music", that is, pure abstract ideas translated into sound according to an established system are being expressed in the form of mechanical resonance, and then that resonance travels through the air to your ear. That little organ of yours converts the waves back to plain sound, electronic singals.
Then your brain processes it according to some innate knowledge of harmony, identifies tonic, key, melody, timbre etc. at lightning speed, the results meet your own abstract concepts of aesthetics and are compared to previous experience and voilá -- music, again, is born. But note that nowhere between the two end points was this stuff we call music truly in existence.
It is music simply because it's intelligible and processed. It's pure language.
math is not created...that is like saying physics is created and thermodynamics have been created in our heads. Sure the words math, physics, and thermodynamics have been invented by us but they are attempting to DESCRIBE something that actually concretely exists
What you just said right there is barely relevant. from my perspective you picked out one phrase of what Caeli said, and you picked it apart. Honestly, if you were truly interested in her video, you would have appreciated it enough to reply by putting a shirt on and giving some constructive criticism (of which there should be none, seeing as how she was just informing, not stating extensive opinions or playing). In the future, I'd ask that you be kind enough to leave other's opinions alone.
I believe music is truly universal because anyone can understand it convey meaning from all ages (even toddlers) and cultures. We couldn't say the same about math because its not taught or learned by all (those closer to birth or developing countries).
@Augustusdavid Trust me, just a small percentage is. Simple division and multiplying. math is not an art. music teaches you to think outside the box, math teaches you to think inside the box. Too many damn rules, that's why a lot of artist hate math.
@gajda1984 I think math can be art as well. I also don't think your statement is a rule. Music can teach you to think inside the box at times and math can help you think outside the box. It depends on the approach and the individual doing the approaching.... Many musicians are actually very good at math.
@Augustusdavid You are right though, many musicians are good at math. I guess I'm just not one of them! I guess it all depends on the individual like you said. I just don't think math is required for music.

Where does music exist? Only in your head.
