Not true. If people stopped building in the most productive areas food wise then we could easily feed the world. Between the midwest of the US and the Ukraine, those two areas could grow more then enough grains for the world. The problem is governments are stupid when it comes to growing food. If you allow them to dictate how farms are run you wind up with famines of biblical proportions.

@Deutschgeoff OK so how do we stop people building there? Cities mainly began when towns that supplied farmers began to grow because they were in a particularly good spot. People then started to move their because cities are where the diverse jobs and culture is. Why are farms being built on? Individual farmers choose to sell their land to developers because they can make a lot more money than via farming. You're arguing against yourself. The only way to stop that is laws that say you can't.

Which European countries? I think you should research the Auto company Opel from Germany. They are extremely popular cars over there and are not sold in the US because they dont have emissions control systems.
@Deutschgeoff The EU imposed emissions standards in 1992 and they have been becoming more stringent ever since. The US went to three way catalytic converters in 2007. The Europeans haven't introduced that yet. Perhaps that's what's up with your Opel. It isn't because of no control systems.
China also introduced emission controls at European level 1 standards in 2000.

@ConservativeCavalry I work next to a restaraunt where this guy named Jackie works with his family. Chinese guy, just came to the country two years ago. Told me about China's forced abortion policy. Said that if people had more children than legally permitted, the state would step in and force the mother to abort. Either that or they would take the child after birth and kill them, or put them into a state-run orphanage and take away some card that the people need to work, making them destitute.

@ConservativeCavalry Here's the argument: the state cannot support a population much beyond where it is now in China, therefore they mandate either zero growth or hopefully a decline in population so that their resources may be used to improve the lives of their citizens. I do get out more then you think, I am not a naive American like most are. I was born in Communist (East) Germany and grew up in the West. I listened to my family members and learned what hell Socialism is, hence the reason I now live in the US.
What other nations do control emissions besides the US? I know that Europe really does not pay attention to it, China could care less.

Not true. If people stopped building in the most productive areas food wise then we could easily feed the world. Between the midwest of the US and the Ukraine, those two areas could grow more then enough grains for the world. The problem is governments are stupid when it comes to growing food. If you allow them to dictate how farms are run you wind up with famines of biblical proportions.
I know what my family is talking about. They lived through both forms. Have you?

@Deutschgeoff OK so how do we stop people building there? Cities mainly began when towns that supplied farmers began to grow because they were in a particularly good spot. People then started to move their because cities are where the diverse jobs and culture is. Why are farms being built on? Individual farmers choose to sell their land to developers because they can make a lot more money than via farming. You're arguing against yourself. The only way to stop that is laws that say you can't.

Have you heard of the Ogllala Aquifer? It is being pumped dry by over watering in the mid west as we speak. Why? Because individual farmers are not limiting their usage to what is sustainable. Why? Because they make more money
Soil erosion means we are already mining our farm land as it is

You blame government for the behaviour of largely unrestrained individuals. Then you keep saying people must be unrestrained. If you think people can be stopped from doing these things without government then explain how. Government is not forcing these actions it's allowing them.
Nature can take care of itself but there are no guarantees that this will be good for us. It'll probably kill millions perhaps billions.

@Deutschgeoff Canada and Europe have every bit as strong as emissions standards as the USA. The USA doesn't even have consistent policies. California drives the nation. China is going to be a leader in zero emission electric cars
But do notice that American emission standards exist only because governments made the companies do it. And yes it cost consumers more money but it's worth it. If China doesn't have emission standards because their government hasn't imposed them. Is that socialism?

Which European countries? I think you should research the Auto company Opel from Germany. They are extremely popular cars over there and are not sold in the US because they dont have emissions control systems.

@Deutschgeoff The EU imposed emissions standards in 1992 and they have been becoming more stringent ever since. The US went to three way catalytic converters in 2007. The Europeans haven't introduced that yet. Perhaps that's what's up with your Opel. It isn't because of no control systems.
China also introduced emission controls at European level 1 standards in 2000.
Does this mean the American government is forcing people to change more than Europe or China? Or is it just wise?

@seanadamscfc These are completely different forms of government, fascism (spell it right please) is a more extreme form of capitalism, centered around production where businesses own everything, and corporations that work for the sole purpose of profit choose how we will live our lives. Communism, on the other hand is a world where the government owns everything and everyone is equal, and government officials are elected by the people. So which one do you dislike?

I believe you are talking about SOCIAL conservatives and SOCIAL progressives as opposed to ECONOMIC conservatives and ECONOMIC liberals. The fascist were SOCIAL conservatives (wanted to preserve their old ways) and ECONOMIC conservatives (opposed the free market).

@koyunbaba73 I don't know that I'd divy this up as "partisan" politics, i.e. left vs right issue. That's trying to pound a square peg in a round hole. This is a debate over sustainability. Whether we can keep adding people to a finite planet with finite resources or not. What I don't get is that many religious conservatives in this country are farmers and ranchers who are intimately familiar with land carrying capacity. Why THEY don't get it (or maybe they do and are just silent) is astonishing.

China's family planning isn't just about abortion. They primarily use birth control methods to avoid pregnancy , and China said nothing about less population from birth control. The commentator is just being sensationalist and misquoting.

@ConservativeCavalry I work next to a restaraunt where this guy named Jackie works with his family. Chinese guy, just came to the country two years ago. Told me about China's forced abortion policy. Said that if people had more children than legally permitted, the state would step in and force the mother to abort. Either that or they would take the child after birth and kill them, or put them into a state-run orphanage and take away some card that the people need to work, making them destitute.

But think about this, what would you rather have, 5 children eating almost nothing, or 10 children eating less then nothing. It's unethical, but so was Agent Orange, yet America used that to destroy the lived of 4.8million vietnamese.

@ConservativeCavalry Here's the argument: the state cannot support a population much beyond where it is now in China, therefore they mandate either zero growth or hopefully a decline in population so that their resources may be used to improve the lives of their citizens. I understand extremist conservatives don't really get the impulse to improve other's lives but some people do actually feel compassion for their fellow humans.

Overpopulation is a very serious problem. If we're allowed to breed like rabbits, the world will get messier, and there will be more unemployment and more competition. I for one chose a less populated and polluted world.

@ConservativeCavalry People who argue for population control do so because when the population becomes larger than the land can support, the result is low quality of life, crime, disease, inescapable poverty, and fewer resources for everyone. Rather than let those who don't understand the concept of resource management to reproduce endlessly and squander the limited resources needed by all, some seek population mandates as a way of maintaining prosperity. In fact, based from what I've read, the idea that abortions can be used for crowd control is unrealistic. Adamos88 was explaining why they do it in China, not supporting it in any way.
