This is exactly the argument I make to straight people who get vehemently upset about the idea of marriages between adults of the same sex: "Why do you care so much and how is it hurting you?" They never have a reasonable, rational answer.
I hate Barbara Boxer's guts, but I agree. What difference does it make what two consenting adults, gay or otherwise, decide to do in the privacy of their own bedroom? What does it matter if they choose to get married? As long as they're not making out in front of you, how are they hurting you?

What is the government doing in the marriage business in the first place? Marriage is a spiritual and emotional commitment, not a legal one. Everything that society has an interest in could be taken care of by a civil contract. I don't think gay marriage should be legal; I thinki all marriages should be removed from the law.

Marriage shouldn't even be in legislation to begin with. Unfortunately, the gov't got involved in the marriage licensing business and now look where we are. It began as a religious ordinance/ceremony between a man and a women; therefore, I understand why a particular religion could be upset about changing the definition of the word.

There was much controversy over interracial marriage and the same people used the same arguments-- ppl are asking for 'special rights' and it's against god.
I don't even like interracial marriages-- I am the product of one though. But it truly does not effect me and I care less about it when I am in a good relationship.

I'm just stating my opinion but personally, I believe that marriage should stay between a man and a woman. I don't care for the way Senator Boxer stated that people feel that their marriage is threatened by gay marriage. I wouldn't question my marriage for a second. However, I don't think that civil liberties like marriage should be put to the people to say who can marry an adult who they would be otherwise able to marry if not for sex and sexual orientation. Segregation and anti miscegenation laws and sodomy laws, were overturned by courts, the people wouldn't have done so by a popular vote

It seems right to ask the question is the current concept of marriage an outdated institution.

And in most cultures, it was usually only between man and a woman. In a lot of cultures though, new wives AND husbands could be added (Native Americans). Does it matter? Well, not really, because right now, people get married for love. And right now gay couples are in love. Give it a different name, w/e but give them full rights.

Their sexuality has no affect on my life in the least. I voted yes on Ref. 77 here to approve of domestic partnerships having the same rights as married people. That being said, I will not vote to allow them to be married. It is in my core moral and ethical beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman and is reserved as such. Domestic Partnerships fine, but not marriage. If the voters decide to allow marriage, then I won't care. But as long as I still have a say then I will vote no.

Anyhow, a push for actual tolerance needs to be made. They call this country a melting pot, but there is not one culture group that has not been harassed and persecuted.

I've been to 26 countries, and I've seen it all close up. In the literal sense, it's very dense of you to expect a genuine "push" for tolerance, but on the other hand, prejudice has become a serious crime, and you can get into a lot of trouble for excessive harassment. That's the best you're going to see in this lifetime, like it or not.
Go see the world, and you'll see far worse.
